Book excerpt: Memoirs of the Author of A Vindication of the Rights of Woman (1798) is William Godwin's biography of his late wife Mary Wollstonecraft. Rarely published in the nineteenth century and sparingly even today, Memoirs is most often viewed as a source for information on Wollstonecraft. However, with the rise of interest in biography and autobiography as important genres in and of themselves, scholars are increasingly studying it for its own sake. Godwin's account of Wollstonecraft's life is wracked with sorrow. He did not shrink from presenting the parts of Wollstonecraft's life that late eighteenth-century British society would judge either immoral or in bad taste, such as her close friendship with a woman, her love affairs, her illegitimate child, her suicide attempts and her agonizing death.

Book excerpt: William Godwin’s memoir of his wife, Mary Wollstonecraft, marks a transition in Godwin’s philosophical development from extreme rationalism to the recognition of the moral importance of feeling and sympathy which was to energize his later writings. Memoirs also belongs to a tradition of biographical writing that sought to transform the consciousness of readers by using individual history as an agent of historical change. Written during the weeks following Wollstonecraft’s early death, Memoirs provides an interpretation of the relations between Wollstonecraft’s writings and her personal history, a candid account of her various relationships, and a vindication of her egalitarian intimacy with Godwin. This modern, scholarly edition, geared for student use, includes a wide range of primary sources, together with excerpts from Godwin’s other writings and from biographical models.

Book excerpt: Memoirs of the Author of A Vindication of the Rights of Woman is the biography, by William Godwin, of his wife Mary Wollstonecraft, author of the essay A Vindication of the Rights of Woman (Defense of Women's Rights, 1792).William Godwin considered it his duty to review and publish the unfinished works left by Mary Wollestonecraft after his death in 1797. A week after his funeral, he began working on this project, and began writing memoirs about his life. To prepare to write this biography, he re-read all his works, spoke with his friends, and finally classified and numbered his correspondence. After four months of hard work, he had completed both projects. According to William St Clair, who wrote a biography of Godwin and Shelley, Mary Wollstonecraft was so famous at the time that William Godwin did not have to mention his name in the title of the biography ...

Book excerpt: Memoirs of the Author of a Vindication of the Rights of Woman William Godwin Wales however was Mr. Wollstonecraft's residence for little more than a year. He returned to the neighbourhood of London; and Mary, whose spirit of independence was unalterable, had influence enough to determine his choice in favour of the village of Walworth, that she might be near her chosen friend. It was probably before this, that she has once or twice started the idea of quitting her parental roof, and providing for herself. But she was prevailed upon to resign this idea, and conditions were stipulated with her, relative to her having an apartment in the house that should be exclusively her own, and her commanding the other requisites of study. She did not however think herself fairly treated in these instances, and either the conditions abovementioned, or some others, were not observed in the sequel, with the fidelity she expected We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A Vindication of the Rights of Woman" was a book of philosophy written by Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin. She was one of the early proponents of a philosophy we now call feminism. Her husband was William Godwin who was also noted as the authors of works on political philosophy. He was one of the forefathers of the anarchist movement. Mary Wollstonecraft and William Godwin were the parents of Mary Shelley who wrote the famous book "Frankenstein or the Modern Prometheus" by Mary Shelley. Frankenstein was originally published in 1818. Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin was the author before she became Mary Shelley. After Wollstonecraft's death, her widower published this Memoir (1798) of her life, revealing her unorthodox lifestyle, which inadvertently destroyed her reputation for almost a century. However, with the emergence of the feminist movement at the turn of the twentieth century, Wollstonecraft's advocacy of women's equality and critiques of conventional femininity became increasingly important. Today Wollstonecraft is regarded as one of the founding feminist philosophers, and feminists often cite both her life and work as important influences.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mary Hays (1759-1843) is often best remembered for her early revolutionary novels The Memoirs of Emma Courtney and The Victim of Prejudice. In this collection, however, Gina Luria Walker reveals the extraordinary range of Hays’s oeuvre. The selections are mainly from Hays’s non-fiction writings, including letters, life-writing, political commentary, and essays. The extracts demonstrate her importance as an advanced and innovative thinker, philosophical commentator, and writer of deliberately experimental fiction. This Broadview edition includes a critical introduction and full annotation. Texts by numerous other writers are interleaved chronologically with Hays’s writings to illustrate her idiosyncratic intellectual genealogy, how her understanding modulated over time, and the multiple ways in which she influenced and was influenced by the most significant issues and figures of her age.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Provides a clear and comprehensive guide to the 2017 FIDIC contracts—written by a member of the FIDIC Updates Task Group FIDIC contracts are the most widely used engineering standard form contracts internationally but until 2017 the three main forms (the Red, Yellow and Silver Books) had not been amended or updated for nearly two decades, since the first editions were published in 1999. Written by a specialist lawyer who was member of the FIDIC Updates Task Group responsible for writing the new contracts, this book examines in detail the many substantial changes they have introduced. After providing an overview the contracts are examined clause by clause with the aim of showing how each compares and contrasts with the others and how the second editions compare and contrast with the first. The first chapter describes how the Red, Yellow and Silver Books evolved from earlier contract forms and the distinctive characteristics of each, before providing an overview of the updates, including new potential risks for both Employer and Contractor, and then examining, in the second chapter, key general provisions such as the new rules on notices and limitation of liability. Chapter 3 examines the enhanced role of the Engineer in the Red and Yellow Books/Employer’s Representative’s function in the Silver including the new procedure for determinations as well as the Employer’s obligations and contract administration. The Contractor’s obligations are considered in chapter 4 while chapter 5 examines his responsibility for design in the Yellow and Silver Books. Chapters 6 to 14 deal respectively with plant, materials and workmanship and staff and labour; time-related provisions in the three contracts including extensions of time, and the Employer’s right to suspend the works; testing on and after completion and the Employer’s taking over of the works; defects after taking over, acceptance of the works and unfulfilled obligations; measurement (in the Red Book), the Contract Price and payment; the new variations regime and adjustments to the Price; termination and suspension; care of the works and indemnities and Exceptional Events (previously, Force Majeure). An important feature of the new contracts is their increased emphasis on clarity in the claims process and on dispute avoidance. These topics are examined in the final two chapters, 15 and 16, which deal respectively with the new claims and dispute resolution provisions of the 2017 forms. FIDIC contracts are the most widely used standard forms of contract for international engineering and construction projects Provides a clear and comprehensive guide to the 2017 FIDIC Red, Yellow and Silver Books Written by a senior specialist lawyer and member of the FIDIC 2017 Updates Task Group responsible for writing the new contracts Accessible to those with little or no familiarity with FIDIC contracts The 2017 FIDIC Contracts is an important guide for anyone engaged in international projects, including employers, contractors, engineers, lawyers, suppliers and project financiers/sponsors.
