Her people suffer under the boot of heavy-handed taskmasters. The third generation of Memoir of Life characters are seeing harder times than ever before. Hope is one of many women attempting to pave a way for her family through the sludge, sometimes by honorable methods, sometimes by the unthinkable.

Book excerpt: These memoirs tell my story of hope. in my early years my father was trying to help the Jews of Europe and worked on the establishment of Israel. Later there were wonderful years growing and learning in Vermont. I describe my personal experiences in the remarkable human rights movement of Martin Luther King. There were years of rising hope for a better community mental health care system as we built programs at Johns Hopkin, Rutgers University, and the Medical College of Wisconsin. The defunding by the Reagan administration and the cruel consequences that occurred are described as I subsequently worked with residents of the inner city of Milwaukee. In 1982, I started to work on the absorption of immigrants to Israel and became chair as we tried to avoid the mistakes of the black-white relationships in America for the tens of thousands of black immigrants from Ethiopia. We worked to help integrate 1,250,000 immigrants who were penniless strangers from communist lands adapting to a new language and culture in Israel. The book also describes the hope engendered by my remarriage and my remarkable family. The epilogue describes the current reality of the Covid 19 pandemic and the rising awareness of the need to heal the long unfair relationship with black Americans as well as an increasing deprived underclass. The book suggests bringing hope to those now deprived using some of the methods of absorption we used in Israel.

Book excerpt: The news felt like a punch in the gut. I cried in disbelief as the doctor told me what they found. In the blink of an eye, my world turned upside down. My husband brought me to the Emergency Room after I experienced a seizure. The hospital staff did scans, tests, and a biopsy, and now the doctor told me I had an inoperable brain tumor. The name of my nemesis was Oligoastrocytoma, Grade 3. My husband and I used the CaringBridge website to keep family and friends informed on how I was doing. A Pilgrimage of Hope, A Story of Faith and Medicine, is my story chronicling the challenges in trying to triumph in the battle for my life. The memoirs capture the frightening details in a crash course with cancer and the possible treatments for this disease. Despite the cancer diagnosis, I found myself being called closer to God. I wanted to share my physical and spiritual journey with others so that when they are challenged, they will have some guidance in how to respond. With recovery in mind, my spiritual growth deepened as I aligned my will with the will of God. A pilgrimage to the Holy Land at the end of my treatments fulfilled my yearning for a greater understanding of Christ. I shared the details of my trip to the Holy Land on my CaringBridge site and in this book.

We started from somewhere and some people's starting points are more challenging than others. But no matter how insurmountable the mountains and valleys may seem, you can and will make it through. The pressures of life are not meant to break you nor destroy you. The pressures of life are to make you stronger so that you can tell your story in the end that it may serve to help thousands if not millions of others going through similar situations. Nothing happens by accident. Everything happens for a purpose and that purpose is for you to learn, grow, and serve.

Book excerpt: "Recovering My Voice" follows the story of Aruni Nan Futuronsky from her earliest memories-on the beach with her family as a child-to her current position as a teacher and coach at the Kripalu Institute for Extraordinary Living. As a young girl, Aruni struggled with a non-traditional sexuality and an incapacitating stutter. The memoir begins in her childhood years, a bittersweet mix of tender memories-moments with her father in his grocery store, a magical morning at Girl Scout camp-and harder times, periods colored by isolation and feelings of helplessness. After Part I, we follow Aruni into her adolescence and early adulthood as she continues to suffer through painful gender confusion and a hollow heterosexual marriage. Finally, Aruni faces her truth and breaks free. At the end of Part II, she moves to New York City and aligns herself with a group of radical Jewish feminist lesbians. But the excitement of her new city life quickly spirals out of control, and in her twenties and thirties, Aruni struggles through drugs, alcohol, and a series of failed relationships. All the while, she continues to teach English at an inner city high school, mitigating her growing discontent by smoking pot during lunch breaks. At the end of Part III, Aruni has hit rock bottom. After coming to while banging her head on the floor without a clue how long she's been there, Aruni decides to face her addiction and attends her first AA meeting-a choice that changes the course of her life. In Part IV, Aruni embraces her new alcohol- and drug-free existence. After taking a workshop at Kripalu in the Berkshires, she makes the decision to leave her city life behind and relocate to the ashram. There her spiritual journey takes off, full of soulful discoveries, growing pains, and a wonderful sense of self-discovery. In Part V, Aruni shifts from itinerant wanderer to guide and teacher, reflecting on the lessons she has learned and sharing with us the invaluable wisdom she has gained from her rich and varied experiences. Aruni's voice is fresh, funny, and heartbreaking, replete with emotional vulnerability and honesty. Recovering My Voice enlightens while it entertains, instructs while it inspires. Like the best of memoirs, is the story of one woman's life told against a backdrop of universal echoes.

Book excerpt: Kate Braestrup's life was transformed by the loss of her husband; now Kate faces the possibility that she may lose her son. As a young mother, Kate Braestrup discovered the fierce protectiveness that accompanies parenthood. In the intervening years -- through mourning her husband and the joy of remarriage and a blended family-Kate has absorbed the rewards and complications of that spirit. But when her eldest son joins the Marines, Kate is at a crossroads: Can she reconcile her desire to protect her children with her family's legacy of service? Can parents balance the joy of a child's independence with the fear of letting go? As Kate examines the twinned emotions of faith and fear -- inspired by the families she meets as a chaplain and by her son's journey towards purpose and familyhood -- she learns that the threats we can't predict will rip us apart and knit us together.
