Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Embodying Relation Allison Moore examines the tensions between the local and the global in the art photography movement in Bamako, Mali, which blossomed in the 1990s after Malian photographers Seydou Keïta and Malick Sidibé became internationally famous and the Bamako Photography Biennale was founded. Moore traces the trajectory of Malian photography from the 1880s—when photography first arrived as an apparatus of French colonialism—to the first African studio practitioners of the 1930s and the establishment in 1994 of the Bamako Biennale, Africa's most important continent-wide photographic exhibition. In her detailed discussion of Bamakois artistic aesthetics and institutions, Moore examines the post-fame careers of Keïta and Sidibé, the biennale's structure, the rise of women photographers, cultural preservation through photography, and how Mali's shift to democracy in the early 1990s enabled Bamako's art scene to flourish. Moore shows how Malian photographers' focus on cultural exchange, affective connections with different publics, and merging of traditional cultural precepts with modern notions of art embody Caribbean philosopher and poet Édouard Glissant's notion of “relation” in ways that spark new artistic forms, practices, and communities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Imaging Culture is a sociohistorical study of the meaning, function, and aesthetic significance of photography in Mali, West Africa, from the 1930s to the present. Spanning the dynamic periods of colonialism, national independence, socialism, and democracy, its analysis focuses on the studio and documentary work of professional urban photographers, particularly in the capital city of Bamako and in smaller cities such as Mopti and Ségu. Featuring the work of more than twenty-five photographers, it concentrates on those who have been particularly influential for the local development and practice of the medium as well as its international popularization and active participation in the contemporary art market. Imaging Culture looks at how local aesthetic ideas are visually communicated in the photographers' art and argues that though these aesthetic arrangements have specific relevance for local consumers, they transcend geographical and cultural boundaries to have value for contemporary global audiences as well. Imaging Culture is an important and visually interesting book which will become a standard source for those who study African photography and its global impact.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the loss of the French Empire, France and its former colonies are still bound by a common historical past. With the new global promotion of la Francophonie, the relation between the various constituencies of the French-speaking regions of the world is reexamined and debated in this book, through the conversation between scholars dealing with diverse texts and contexts that present the colonial contact and its imprint. The book illustrates how, in France and in its other worlds, that contact, its repercussions, and its memory are lived and expressed today in a variety of textual representations. The historical contact between France and its other worlds has given birth to new kinds of cross-cultural expressions in the arts, in literature, and in aesthetics, establishing interrelations and generating appropriations from both sides of the Hexagon frontier, highlighting the fluidity and the permeability of its cultural borders. The book subtext tells that the frontier between France and its other worlds is no more an unshakable geographical, political, and cultural limit, but rather a line that has become mobile, fluctuating, and permeable, and across which currents, ideas, sensitivities, and creativity are expressed, bearing testimony to vitality and diversity but also to a cross-fertilization of cultures and societies (re) crossing or meeting at that line. Seen from this latter perspective, the book comes also as an interrogation of the inclusiveness or exclusiveness of the words francophone and Francophonie, and, at an academic level, a mutual exclusion of French and Francophone Studies.

Book excerpt: "Featuring approximately 250 works by over thirty artists from across the African continent, Snap Judgements presents a range of highly individual artistic responses to the unprecedented changes now taking place in Africa and provides new insight into the increasing role of the visual arts within the global cultural community. In addition to introducing audiences to the multiple imaginations and voices that constitute today's African artists, the book explores ways that this body of photo-based art arises from the dialectic of African aesthetic values and Western influences."--BOOK JACKET.

Book excerpt: The exhibition invites viewers to undertake a two-way journey, from Southto North, and examine the similarities and differences between the work ofthose artists who emigrated and the work of those who stayed. It also invitesus to reevaluate our concept of what is African. The works represent several generations of artists who have penetrated international circuits in recent years. Frdric Bruly Bouabr (Ivory Coast) serves as the starting point for a dialogue between the local and the global with works that challenge every possible preconceived idea about tradition and contemporaneity. In turn, these establish a harmonious dialogue with the works of other artists such as William Kentridge (South Africa), Viy Diba (Senegal) and Touhami Ennadre (Morocco), and with those of younger artists who experiment with the full range of media (photography, video and film), such as Emeka Udemba (Nigeria), Marie Blanche Ouedraogo (Burkina Faso), Otobong Nkanga (Nigeria), Romuald Hazoum (Benin) and Soly Ciss (Senegal). Artists: Ammar Bouras, Modou Dieng, Mbongeni Richman, Buthelezi, Touhami Ennadre, Frdric Bruly, Bouabr, Moustapha Dim, Soly Ciss, Frances Goodman, Otobong Nkanga, Abdoulaye Konat, Chri Samba, Romual Hazoum, Marie Blanche, Ouedraogo, William Kentridge, Djibril Sy, Bodys Isek Kingelez, Miguel Petchkovsky, Moshekwa Langa, Emeka Udemba and Ammar Bauras.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Os artistas Ricardo Rangel, Viteix, Manuel Figueira, Mestre Didi, Alexandre Santos, Luís Basto, Mauro Pinto, Tomás Cumbana, Fábio Domingues, Celestino Mondlane, Paulo Kapela, Chico Tabibuia, Maurino Araújo, Pinto, Hilário Gemuce, Victor Sousa, António Ole, Fernando Alvim, Tchalé Figueira, Marepe, Rosana Paulino, Bento Oliveira, António Sérgio Moreira, Yonamine, Tiago Borges, Rubem Valentim apresentam aos cabo-verdianos obras de fotografia, vídeo, pintura, desenho, instalação e escultura.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A young writer has his heart set on his aunt's large apartment. With this seemingly simple conceit, the characters of The Planetarium are set in orbit and a galaxy of argument, resentment, and bitterness erupts. Telling the story from various points of view, Sarraute focuses below the surface, on the emotional lives of the characters in a way that surpasses even Virginia Woolf. Always deeply engaging, The Planetarium reveals the deep disparity between the way we see ourselves and the way others see us.
