Samuel Hidden His correspondence also was limited, his letters generally being of a confidential character, so that few have been inserted entire and but few extracts made. The brief extracts which are given from his sermons, though highly interesting, must fail to do him justice. They need the spar kle of his eye, his gushing tears and melt ings of soul. D In both points of the strategy - the investing the innocent with the aspect of the guilty in the eyes of rational men, and with the covering of the savage beasts in the eyes of the irrational dogs, he seldom fails to find imitators in every excitement of partisan fury; and it is only what is due to the truth of history in calmer times that the persecutors and the persecuted be set in their real light, at least before the rational world. Samuel Davies: Formerly President of the College of New Jersey During the first part of the eighteenth cen tury, religion was, perhaps, in a lower state of declension, throughout the British dominions, than at any other period since the reformation. The concurrent testimony of churchmen and dissenters establishes this fact. Many clergy men of'various denominations had become very lukewarm, and in many instances exceedingly corrupt; and the people were ready enough to follow the steps of their spiritual guides. It was in this season of darkness that several men were born, who, afterwards, were burning and shining lights in the world. The names of Ten nent, Blair, Edwards, Davies, and Whitefield. M: With Extracts From Some of His Most Interesting Letters; To Which Is Added, a Brief Memoir of Mrs. Pearce God, which somehow, he knew not how, pre-v served him in most instances from carrying his wicked inclinations into practice, he sup posed he should have been utterly ruined. At times he was under strong convictions, which rendered him miserable; but at other times they subsided; and then he would re turn with eagerness to his sinful pursuits. When about fifteen years old he was sent by his father to inquire after the welfare of a per son in the neighbourhood, in dying circum stances, who, though before his departure he was in a happy state of mind, yet at that tithe was sinking into deep despair. While in the room of the dying man, he heard him cry out with inexpressible agony of Spirit, I am damned for ever! These awful words pierced his soul; and he felt a resolution at the time to serve the Lord: but the impression soon wore off, and he again returned to folly. This book was released on 2017-10-24 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life and Select Discourses of Rev. Samuel H. Stearns Tm: account of the Life and Character of Mr. Stearns has been extended beyond what was at first anticipated. Many of his letters, written in Europe, and copious extracts from his note-book for Italy, will be found incorporated with the memoir. It may not be necessary to apologize for the subject-matter or for the literary execution of them. But it should be remembered, that they were written with confidential and unstudied free dom, sketched, often in weariness and in haste, for the entertainment of friends, or to aid the author's own recollections of interesting scenes. From the very nature of the case, they could not be advantageously, revised, even if any one had been disposed to attempt a revision. They are, there fore, given to the press, without correction, just as they were written - as a record of first impressions, fresh and warm from the heart. Samuel Bacon, about two years previous to his lamented death, commenced the preparation of a sketch of the principal events of his life. In this undertaking he was induced to engage, in the expectation of deriving some personal benefit from the recollections which the labour would supply his own mind; and of gratifying and profiting a few friends, to whose perusal it might be proper to offer the narrative. Of this sketch he drew up an outline; in which, were put down, little besides the dates of the principal occurrences of his history, down to the year 1817, and an enumeration of such related subjects as he proposed to discuss in detail. The first chapter only of this outline, was all he lived to complete. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
