Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoir of John Griscom, LL. D: Late Professor of Chemistry and Natural Philosophy, With an Account of the New York High School, Society for the Prevention of Pauperism, the House of Refuge; And Other Institutions The preparation of a Memoir by one who bears such relations to its subject as are sustained in the present instance, is felt to be a work of no little delicacy. While on one hand affection prompts to the display of much that is profoundly grateful to the memory, and is sug gestive of a desire that others might participate in the enjoyment of it, other sentiments dictate its reservation. Of such nature is much of the familiar correspondence, which presents various special personal characteristics, and is often marked with much fulness and freedom of expression on many subjects, of both private and public interest. The presentation of such, on the printed page, it was feared might be deemed obtrusive of private matters. Book Synopsis Taming Passion for the Public Good by : Mark E. Kann
Download or read book Taming Passion for the Public Good written by Mark E. Kann and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2013-04-01 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Kann's latest tour de force explores the ambivalence, during the founding of our nation, about whether political freedom should augur sexual freedom. Tracing the roots of patriarchal sexual repression back to revolutionary America, Kann asks highly contemporary questions about the boundaries between public and private life, suggesting, provocatively, that political and sexual freedom should go hand in hand.” —Ben Agger, University of Texas at Arlington The American Revolution was fought in the name of liberty. In popular imagination, the Revolution stands for the triumph of populism and the death of patriarchal elites. But this is not the case, argues Mark E. Kann. Rather, in the aftermath of the Revolution, America developed a society and system of laws that kept patriarchal authority alive and well—especially when it came to the sex lives of citizens. In Taming Passion for the Public Good, Kann contends that that despite the rhetoric of classical liberalism, the founding generation did not trust ordinary citizens with extensive liberty. Under the guise of paternalism, they were able simultaneously to retain social control while espousing liberal principles, with the goal of ultimately molding the country into the new American ideal: a moral and orderly citizenry that voluntarily did what was best for the public good. Mark E. Kann, Professor Emeritus of Political Science and History, held the USC Associates Chair in Social Science at the University of Southern California. He is the author of Republic of Men (NYU Press, 1998) and Punishment, Prisons, and Patriarchy (NYU Press, 2005).
Book Synopsis The Papers of Thomas Jefferson, Retirement Series, Volume 20 by : Thomas Jefferson
Download or read book The Papers of Thomas Jefferson, Retirement Series, Volume 20 written by Thomas Jefferson and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2024-03-12 with total page 789 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A definitive new volume of the retirement papers of Thomas Jefferson During the period covered by the 575 documents in this volume, Jefferson advises President James Monroe on what later becomes known as the “Monroe Doctrine.” He also approves of the Greek independence movement in correspondence with the scholar and political leader Adamantios Coray. Jefferson says that the “most dangerous blot” on the U.S. Constitution is the provision under which a vote by the states in the House of Representatives decides elections not settled by the Electoral College. With his allies in Virginia’s General Assembly, he succeeds in converting the University of Virginia’s loans from the state Literary Fund into an outright grant and obtains an additional $50,000 for books and scientific instruments. He seeks advice on regulating and equipping the institution, helps to obtain its architectural capitals, and designs its gymnasia. Jefferson describes coffee as “the favorite beverage of the civilised world” and advises a namesake child to “Adore God. reverence and cherish your parents. love your neighbor as yourself; and your country more than life. be just. be true. murmur not at the ways of Providence, and the life into which you have entered will be the passage to one of eternal and ineffable bliss.”
