Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoir of Henry Clay To almost any eye which surveys dispassionately the field of our National History during the last sixty or seventy years, the stately figure of Henry Clay will come at once and prominently into view. No American eye wall ever overlook it. No American pen will ever attempt to dwarf or disparage it. All that Webster was to the North, all that Calhoun was to the South, Clay was to the Great West; perhaps more than all. Neither of these three remarkable men ever commanded the votes of the whole country, or grasped the coveted prize of the Presidency. But together - sometimes in opposition, sometimes in conjunction, and almost always in rivalry - they exercised an influence on public affairs far greater than that of any other three men of their times. They did not leave their peers. Thus far they have had no successors of equal individuality, prominence, and power. Their last signal public efforts were made, side by side, in the Senate of the United States, in support of what were called the Compromises of 1850. Before two years more had elapsed, they were all three in their graves. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Charismatic, charming, and one of the best orators of his era, Henry Clay achieved success at many levels. Yet Clay still saw presidential greatness remain a fingertip away. Why? This book uses new sources to provide a focused, nuanced description of Clay's programs and politics and to explain why the man they called "The Great Rejected" never won the presidency but did win the accolades of history.

During the greater part of my stay in Ken tucky, I have been unable, from indisposition, to endure the labour of writing; and hence, when my health has permitted, I have necessarily written with a degree of haste wholly meonsrstent with the care and attention which, under other Circumstances, I should certainly have be stowed upon my work. The necessity of sending the manuscript to new-england, sheet by sheet, Without even allowmg myself time to preserve copies of it, has undoubtedly led tt some errors of plan and ar rangement. The same necessity, together with that of luniting the vo lume to a given number of pages, has compelled me to omit several im portant incidents in the more recent portion of Mr. Clay's history. This book was released on 2016-06-27 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Public Services of Henry Clay The first edition of this work appeared, during the autumn of 1842, at which time, there was no published memoir of Mr. Clay (so far as the writer's knowledge extended) except that by George D. Prentice, Esq., which terminates with the close of John Quincy Adams's administration. To this eloquent biographical sketch, the Author takes pleas ure in acknowledging his indebtedness, for a number of interesting facts. The new and improved edition of his life OF clay, now offered to the public, has been carefully revised - some errors have been corrected - several omissions have been supplied - aud the Memoir has been brought down to the spring of 1848. It is hardly necessary to say, that the portrait; which accompanies this edition, is from a painting by linen, taken some twenty years since. It was regarded as a like ness at that time. E. S. Book Synopsis Henry Clay and the American System by : Maurice G. Baxter
Download or read book Henry Clay and the American System written by Maurice G. Baxter and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2004-11-19 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This detailed study of Henry Clay and the American System -- a program of vigorous economic nationalism dependent on active government and constitutional aspects of what was perhaps Clay's greatest contribution to national policy, a contribution that has received surprisingly little study until now. During the first half of the nineteenth century the new United States experienced rapid material growth, transforming a largely agrarian, pre-modern economy into a diversified, industrializing one. As Speaker of the House in the years following the War of 1812, and later as founder of the Whig party, Clay argued strongly for the development of a home market for domestic goods so that Americans would not be dependent on foreign imports. This "American System" was originally little more than a protective tariff on foreign goods, but it soon came to encompass a collection of policies that included a national banking system and distribution of federal funds to improve transportation. Baxter reveals the inner workings of Clay's program and offers the first careful analysis of its successes and failures. This lively and incisive account will appeal to anyone interested in American history and the processes that shaped modern America
