Book Synopsis The Changing Forms of Identity Politics in Nigeria Under Economic Adjustment by : Cyril I. Obi
Download or read book The Changing Forms of Identity Politics in Nigeria Under Economic Adjustment written by Cyril I. Obi and published by Nordic Africa Institute. This book was released on 2001 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Niger delta region of Nigeria which is at the heart of the country's oil industry, has a long history of struggles for self-determination dating back to the early years of the 20[superscript th] century. In the 1980s and 1990s, these struggles, unfolding as they did within the context of military authoritarianism and structural adjustment, took the form of widespread agitation for greater control by local communities of the revenues accruing to the Nigerian state from exploration and extraction of oil." "This study attempts to capture the transformations in ethnic minority identity politics in the oil-producing areas of the Niger delta. In doing this, attention is simultaneously drawn to the factors informing the shift from peaceful agitation to violent protest as well as the dynamic of decay and renewal in the various ethnic minority movements that are active in the delta. It is suggested that part of the solution to the crisis in the delta will involve not only a thorough-going restructuring of the Nigerian state but also the re-orientation of the mode of operation of the giant oil multinationals in order to make them both more sensitive and accountable to the local communities."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book Synopsis Contemporary Nigerian Politics by : A. Carl LeVan
Download or read book Contemporary Nigerian Politics written by A. Carl LeVan and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2019-01-17 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2015, Nigeria's voters cast out the ruling People's Democratic Party (PDP). Here, A. Carl LeVan traces the political vulnerability of Africa's largest party in the face of elite bargains that facilitated a democratic transition in 1999. These 'pacts' enabled electoral competition but ultimately undermined the party's coherence. LeVan also crucially examines the four critical barriers to Nigeria's democratic consolidation: the terrorism of Boko Haram in the northeast, threats of Igbo secession in the southeast, lingering ethnic resentments and rebellions in the Niger Delta, and farmer-pastoralist conflicts. While the PDP unsuccessfully stoked fears about the opposition's ability to stop Boko Haram's terrorism, the opposition built a winning electoral coalition on economic growth, anti-corruption, and electoral integrity. Drawing on extensive interviews with a number of politicians and generals and civilians and voters, he argues that electoral accountability is essential but insufficient for resolving the representational, distributional, and cultural components of these challenges.

Book Synopsis The Political Constraints on Nigerian Economic Development Since the Independence by : Cajetan Iwunze
Download or read book The Political Constraints on Nigerian Economic Development Since the Independence written by Cajetan Iwunze and published by Strategic Book Publishing. This book was released on 2013-02 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since gaining its independence in 1960, Nigeria has never really existed as a unified nation, but rather as scattered tribal sects that often fail to coexist with one another peacefully. This uneasy alliance has led to civil war in the past, and is responsible for the continuing conflict between Muslims and Christians that exists in Nigeria today. Because of these deeply embedded political constraints, Nigeria has also fallen behind in terms of economic development. However Nigeria is not a nation without resources. Many of Nigeria's conflicts are centered around oil. As it stands currently, Nigeria's wealth is concentrated in the hands of the ruling elite and little has been done to improve the situation of the poorest segments of the population. But the prolonged and dismal situation in the Nigerian economy that serves as the inspiration behind The Political Constraints on Nigerian Economic Development Since the Independence is not without a potential solution. Author Cajetan Iwunze intended this book as more than just a statement against the tribal nationalism and the economic bandits that continue to loot the country. It also aims to suggest that if there is a solution, it lies in reforming the country's institutions so that Nigeria's oil wealth can be used for the benefit of everyone. Although he currently lives in the UK, Cajetan Iwunze was born in eastern Nigeria. Mr. Iwunze is an international human rights campaigner, writer and teacher who serves as the Director of Professional Tutors Ltd. and the CEO of Dyswrite Ltd.
