Book Synopsis Media-State Relations and Social Media by : Tyler W. Wilson
Download or read book Media-State Relations and Social Media written by Tyler W. Wilson and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-11-15 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book updates scholarship related to media-state relations for the social media age. It presents a timely account of how states have engaged with the platforms that have spread around the world – and the challenges that this presents. Further, it is positioned at a novel intersection between the Communications and International Relations disciplines, so scholars and students of both fields will find value within it. In particular, the book explores the Four Theories of the Press's role as a seminal text within media-state relations scholarship. It reimagines the original models through a Neo-Gramscian lens. The four models contained within the book deepen the analytic power of the original and align these ideas with the complexity of social media. Importantly, this book presents original research findings on measuring and quantifying the social media-state relationship as theorised by establishing and validating the new Order Index. Scholars and students of the fields discussed within will find value in the theoretical models and the quantitative instrument developed to measure these models. Of note is that the book contains the basis for using the Order Index in future research and highlights a new research future within this space.

Download or read book Home written by Johannes Lenhard and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-05-19 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How are notions of ‘home’ made and negotiated by ethnographers? And how does the researcher relate to forms of home encountered during fieldwork? Rather than searching for an abstract, philosophical understanding of home, this collection asks how home gains its meaning and significance through ongoing efforts to create, sustain or remake a sense of home. The volume explores how researchers and informants alike are always involved in the process of making and unmaking home, and challenges readers to reimagine ethnographic practice in terms of active, morally complex process of home-making. Contributions reach across the globe and across social contexts, and the book includes chapters on council housing and middle-class apartment buildings, homelessness and migration, problems with accessing the field as well as limiting it, physical as well as sentimental notions of home, and objects as well as inter-human social relations. Home draws attention to processes of sociality that normally remain analytically invisible, and contributes to a growing and rich field of study on the anthropology of home.

Book Synopsis Transcendence, Creation and Incarnation by : Anthony O'Hear
Download or read book Transcendence, Creation and Incarnation written by Anthony O'Hear and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-06-11 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book expounds and analyses notions of transcendence, creation and incarnation reflectively and personally, combining both philosophical and religious insights. Preferring tender-minded approaches to reductively materialistic ones, it shows some ways in which reductive approaches to human affairs can distort the appreication of our lives and activities. In the book’s first half it examines a number of aspects of human life and experience in the thought of Darwin, Ruskin, and Scruton with a view to exploring the extent to which there could be intimations of transcendence. The second half is then devoted to outlining an account of divine creation and incarnation, deriving initially, though not uncritically, from the thought of Simone Weil. The text concludes by examining the extent to which grace is needed to engage in religious practice and belief. Taking in art, literature, music and classical Greek writings, this is a multifaceted thesis on transcendence. It will, therefore, will be of keen interest to any scholar of Philosophy of Religion, Theology, Aesthetics and Metaphysics.
Book Synopsis Naples and Napoleon by : John A. Davis
Download or read book Naples and Napoleon written by John A. Davis and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2008-12-18 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Naples and Napoleon John Davis takes the southern Italian Kingdom of the Two Sicilies as the vantage point for a sweeping reconsideration of Italy's history in the age of Napoleon and the European revolutions. The book's central themes are posed by the period of French rule from 1806 to 1815, when southern Italy was the Mediterranean frontier of Napoleon's continental empire. The tensions between Naples and Paris made this an important chapter in the history of that empire and revealed the deeper contradictions on which it was founded. But the brief interlude of Napoleonic rule later came to be seen as the critical moment when a modernizing North finally parted company from a backward South. Although these arguments still shape the ways in which Italian history is written, in most parts of the North political and economic change before Unification was slow and gradual; whereas in the South it came sooner and in more disruptive forms. Davis develops a wide-ranging critical reassessment of the dynamics of political change in the century before Unification. His starting point is the crisis that overwhelmed the Italian states at the end of the 18th century, when Italian rulers saw the political and economic fabric of the Ancien Régime undermined throughout Europe. In the South the crisis was especially far reaching and this, Davis argues, was the reason why in the following decade the South became the theatre for one of the most ambitious reform projects in Napoleonic Europe. The transition was precarious and insecure, but also mobilized political projects and forms of collective action that had no counterparts elsewhere in Italy before 1848, illustrating the similar nature of the political challenges facing all the pre-Unification states. Although Unification finally brought Italy's insecure dynastic principalities to an end, it offered no remedies to the insecurities that from much earlier had made the South especially vulnerable to the challenges of the new age: which was why the South would become a problem - Italy's 'Southern Problem'.
