That God desires for their light, the light of Jesus, to shine ever so brightly?

God answered the author’s prayer for just that! For years, her grandchildren insisted on “Memaw, storytime!” But she had no imagination. She prayed, “God, give me Your story. They need You in their lives.” She began a journal of the stories a few years ago. Many of the stories are based on her family’s true life experiences. They deal with salvation, faith, hope, the power of God, rebellion, forgiveness, and more. This is a small collection of those stories. JoAnn Vicknair had never written a book and never had a desire to. But, she decided to type up the stories from her journal so her grandchildren could practice reading with stories that they love. During that process, God told her to have them published.

Both a standalone novel and a follow up to The First Magnificent Summer, this pitch-perfect middle grade story is destined to become a classic. Thirteen-year-old aspiring writer Victoria Reeves remains dedicated to writing in her diary as her reading tastes evolve from Virginia Woolf to Sylvia Plath. She’s growing up—getting the hang of her monthly “visitor,” coming to terms with her relationship with her estranged father, and grappling with her ever-evolving views of womanhood. But the summer brings unexpected bumps along the way when Victoria develops complicated feelings about the cute boy next door and decidedly uncomplicated ones about her mom’s new boyfriend. To protect her mom—and the family dynamic she’s used to—from this unwanted interloper, Victoria will do what it takes to send him packing. But when she goes too far, Victoria realizes all she’s done is ruin a good thing for her mom. Is it too late to set things right?

Book excerpt: Razors Edge was written for my family. It is based on events that a family struggles with leading up to a second civil war in the United States. The name of Razors Edge comes from three things. First, Razor is for the Arkansas Razorbacks. Edge is for the overlook located in Devils Den, Arkansas. Second, Razors Edge represents the division of the country by the actions of the Government and the general public not standing for their actions. Razors Edge shows how one person can unite the masses under one strong belief. This is one mans opinion about how the Governments wasteful spending, policies, and actions can cause chaos throughout the country. The main family characters in the book are named after actual members of my family.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A ten-year-old girl learns the importance of family and community in this tale of love and hope set during the Hurricane Katrina disaster. Armani Curtis can think about only one thing: her tenth birthday. All her friends are coming to her party, her mama is making a big cake, and she has a good feeling about a certain wrapped box. Turning ten is a big deal to Armani. It means she’s older, wiser, more responsible. But when Hurricane Katrina hits the Lower Nines of New Orleans, Armani realizes that being ten means being brave, watching loved ones die, and mustering all her strength to help her family weather the storm. A powerful story of courage and survival, Upside Down in the Middle of Nowhere celebrates the miraculous power of hope and love in the face of the unthinkable. Praise for Upside Down in the Middle of Nowhere “Lamana goes for and achieves realism here, carefully establishing the characters and setting before describing in brutal detail, beyond what is typical in youth literature, the devastating effects of Katrina—loss of multiple family members, reports of attacks in the Superdome, bodies drifting in the current and less-than-ideal shelter conditions. An honest, bleak account of a national tragedy sure to inspire discussion and research.” —Kirkus Reviews “I recommend the book because I think it does a good job of capturing what life was like in New Orleans both before and after Katrina and because Armani’s journey will give readers a lot to think about and discuss. But parents will want to know that it doesn’t flinch when describing the death and destruction that hit New Orleans during that time and be cautious with younger, sensitive readers.” —Cindy Hudson, author of Book by Book

After becoming pregnant in high school and dropping out, she earned a G.E.D. and then attended community college to become a Certified Nurses' Aide. She has a stable job, her own trailer nestled in her kin's holler, her parents next door to keep her little boy, Emmett, and a handsome man pursuing her. Mr. Solomon is a cantankerous but wise homebound patient on Candy's caseload. He reminds her of her Papaw who passed away several years ago. With no friends or family left, Mr. Solomon's reliance on Candy draws them into a more familial relationship. Mr. Solomon has a storied past he keeps hidden from Candy, and when she discovers it, she feels disoriented and betrayed. Dean is a handsome outsider from Lexington who finds Candy attractive and refreshing. She initially does not trust him because he's from the big city and older than her. On their second date he confides in her that he's having doubts about his faith. As the story unfolds and the ground beneath them shifts, their individual struggles create a quick intimacy between Candy and Dean. Told in Candy's Appalachian vernacular with colloquialisms woven throughout, Where Your Treasure Lies explores themes of cultural norms and identity, betrayal, regional history, family conflict, faith, addiction, forgiveness, and what one truly needs to be content.

Book excerpt: A housewife revels in the secret world of her mind filled with historical characters and twisted love stories in this inventive sendup of Southern fiction. Mrs. Hollingsworth sits at her kitchen table, compiling her grocery list. The subject of the list is not foodstuffs, but memories that never happened, inventions of loves, and strange conspiracies peopled by men who appear in the lonely housewife’s head—men infinitely more real to her than her own husband. Confederate general Nathan Bedford Forrest gallops into her story, courtesy of media giant Ted Turner and two shady criminal types named Bundy and Oswald who are engaged in a secret experiment to create “the New Southerner.” Her prying daughters believe Mrs. Hollingsworth is losing her mind. But in truth, their mother is simply looking for love via hand-to-hand combat on the surreal battlefield inside her head. Originally published as Mrs. Hollingsworth’s Men, Padgett Powell’s Hologram is a stunning literary achievement. Strikingly unique, it is a poignant, funny, and unconventional fever dream brought to lyrical life.

Book excerpt: Join oddball outsiders Nick, Molly, and Karl in a hilarious middle-school illustrated novel adventure full of awkwardness and missteps as they strive to be seen in a world that would prefer they stay invisible. Nick is the shortest seventh-grader in the history of the world (he’s pretty sure), he doesn’t fit in with any groups or clubs (who needs ’em?), and he spends more time inside than outside his locker (they’re roomier than you’d think). Things only get worse when a well intentioned guidance counselor forces Nick to join the school’s lamest club—along with fellow misfits Molly and Karl—in her quest to cure all three of their “peer allergies.” What starts off as a reluctant band of hopeless oddballs morphs into an effective and empowered team ready to face whatever middle school throws at them, including bullies, awkward romance, zany adults, and a brave new world of surprising friendships. Renowned cartoonist Michael Fry brings an unforgettable cast of characters to life in this illustrated novel brimming with honesty, humor, and heart. This ebook was previously published as Odd Squad: Bully Bait.

"I picked up my poster, raising it so everyone could see that if they chopped down these old oak trees, they'd be killing the South as well. I held it high like I meant it, and I walked around Oak Square forty-six more times that day, till all that was left of the sun was a buttery smear in the sky." Miracle Bott's activism is a constant embarrassment to her thirteen year old daughter, Starshine. Why does Miracle spend all her time fighting causes? And how can Starshine's grandmother remain so supportive? After all, the 60's were a long time ago. First Miracle tries to save the whales, then the ozone layer, and now it's the old oak trees in the town square. But when Miracle decides to protect one of the oaks by living in it, she may have gone too far--too far for the mayor, the community, and especially her daughter. Now Starshine must find a way to make Miracle come down from the tree before their relationship becomes a lost cause. In her warm, evocative style, Laura Williams explores the relationships between three generations of women struggling to find connections.

Book excerpt: In 1865, Confederate soldier Clyde Blake leaves the Civil War behind and heads west to settle a town he names Willow Creek. Among the belongings he carries with him is a doll – a doll that comes to be known as The Silent Witness. Just under one hundred years later – on a warm summer night in 1963 – six-year-old William Blake first hears the story of his great, great grandfather’s Civil War service and how Willow Creek came to be Willow Creek, but hears nothing about The Silent Witness. And in 1990, William finally comes to know The Silent Witness and all not revealed back in 1963; that’s where our journey both begins and ends. What lies in between 1963 and 1990 is the saga of a family called Blake. Hippies and pot, feminism and family values, homosexuality and HIV, God’s will and personal responsibility – all collide as, one by one, and sometimes two by two, members of the Blake family struggle with the search for peace inside the turmoil that is life, until ultimately, William, the last of the family’s tortured souls, finds his peace in what his mother tells him would come to him in whispered words of wisdom.
