It is the American story of balancing a new life and future while honoring and using the 'old ways' to enrich the communities in which they lived. It is Lily's story of her partnership with husband Dinh to provide a foundation of resiliency, creativity, humor, and drive for not only their generation, but also for generations to come. Download or read book In the Dragon's Shadow written by Sebastian Strangio and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2020-08-07 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A timely look at the impact of China's booming emergence on the countries of Southeast Asia Today, Southeast Asia stands uniquely exposed to the waxing power of the new China. Three of its nations border China and five are directly impacted by its claims over the South China Sea. All dwell in the lengthening shadow of its influence: economic, political, military, and cultural. As China seeks to restore its former status as Asia's preeminent power, the countries of Southeast Asia face an increasingly stark choice: flourish within Beijing's orbit or languish outside of it. Meanwhile, as rival powers including the United States take concerted action to curb Chinese ambitions, the region has emerged as an arena of heated strategic competition. Drawing on more than a decade of on-the-ground experience, Sebastian Strangio explores the impacts of China's rise on Southeast Asia, the varied ways in which the countries of the region are responding, and what it might mean for the future balance of power in the Indo-Pacific.
Book Synopsis The Fire of the Dragon by : Ian Williams
Download or read book The Fire of the Dragon written by Ian Williams and published by Birlinn Ltd. This book was released on 2022-08-04 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shortlisted for the Orwell Prize 2023 As seen in The Times, Sunday Times, Spectator, and on Tonight with Andrew Marr (LBC) Under President Xi Jinping, China's global ambitions have taken a dangerous new turn. Bullying and intimidation have replaced diplomacy, and trade, investment, even big-spending tourists and students have been weaponised. Beijing has strengthened its alliance with Vladimir Putin, supporting Russia's aggression in Ukraine, and brooks no criticism of its own flagrant human rights violations against the Uyghur population in western China. Western leaders say they don't want a cold war with China, but it's a little too late for that. Beijing is already waging a more complex, broader and more dangerous cold war than the old one with the Soviet Union. And it is intensifying. This thought-provoking and alarming book examines this new cold war's many fronts – from Taiwan and the South China Sea to the Indian frontier, the Arctic and cyberspace. In doing so it proclaims the clear and sobering message that we must open our eyes to the reality of China's rise and its ruthless bid for global dominance.

Book excerpt: Lion dance has been in Singapore since the 1930s and is closely connected with the Chinese clans that organised the first troupes, with some of these clans hailing as far back as the 1800s. Chronicling the history of lion dance, therefore, is akin to chronicling the pioneering years of our nation. However, few books document the history of this art form in Singapore. This book is the first of its kind to introduce the history, culture, sport and performance art that is lion and dragon dance in English. It will cover the types of dances and costumes, symbolisms and values embedded in the lion and dragon dance communities. It will tell the stories of Singaporean lion and dragon dance pioneers which have never before appeared in any English publications. It will also feature interviews with current leaders in the community and share our hopes for the future of the art form in Singapore.
Book Synopsis China's Omnidirectional Peripheral Diplomacy by : Jianwei Wang
Download or read book China's Omnidirectional Peripheral Diplomacy written by Jianwei Wang and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2019-04-05 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In view of its size, and vast land and sea boundaries that it shares with its neighbours, China has always regarded its peripheral policy as a crucial aspect of its national security. Such a mentality conforms to Chinese leaders' core belief that a stable external environment — in particular, its immediate region — remains the sine qua non for the continued and sustained rejuvenation of their nation. This book examines China's evolving strategies towards its surrounding peripheries. It is the first book to examine in detail President Xi Jinping's steering of China's peripheral diplomacy. It argues that China pursues an ambitious, omnidirectional regional diplomacy that emphasizes the entire periphery region, and not just specific peripheries. According to this book, Chinese regional policy cannot be properly and adequately understood without taking into account its full breadth, substance and scope. Featuring chapters that explore China's evolving policy in Northeast Asia, Southeast Asia, South Asia and Central Asia, and addressing new developments under Xi, this book fleshes out the intricacies of how China has been managing its peripheral relationships in Asia under new circumstances and new leadership.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Will the nations of Southeast Asia maintain their strategic autonomy, or are they destined to become a subservient periphery of China? This book’s expert authors address this pressing question in multiple contexts. What clues to the future lie in the modern history of Sino-Southeast Asian relations? How economically dependent on China has the region already become? What do Southeast Asians think of China? Does Beijing view the region in proprietary terms as its own backyard? How has the relative absence, distance, and indifference of the United States affected the balance of influence between the US and China in Southeast Asia? The book also explores China’s moves and Southeast Asia’s responses to them. Does China’s Maritime Silk Road through Southeast Asia herald a Pax Sinica across the region? How should China’s expansionary acts in the South China Sea be understood? How have Southeast Asian states such as Vietnam and the Philippines responded? How does Singapore’s China strategy compare with Indonesia’s? How relevant is the Association of Southeast Asian Nations? To what extent has China tried to persuade the “overseas Chinese” in Southeast Asia to identify with “'the motherland” and support its aims? How are China’s deep involvements in Cambodia and Laos affecting the economies and policies of those countries? “This rich collection,” writes renowned author-journalist Nayan Chanda, answers these and other questions while offering “fresh insights” and “new information and analyses” to explain Southeast Asia’s relations with China.

Book Synopsis Environmental Change and Agricultural Sustainability in the Mekong Delta by : Mart A. Stewart
Download or read book Environmental Change and Agricultural Sustainability in the Mekong Delta written by Mart A. Stewart and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-05-13 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mekong Delta of Vietnam is one of the most productive agricultural areas in the world. The Mekong River fans out over an area of about 40,000 sq kilometers and over the course of many millennia has produced a region of fertile alluvial soils and constant flows of energy. Today about a fourth of the Delta is under rice cultivation, making this area one of the premier rice granaries in the world. The Delta has always proven a difficult environment to manipulate, however, and because of population pressures, increasing acidification of soils, and changes in the Mekong’s flow, environmental problems have intensified. The changing way in which the region has been linked to larger flows of commodities and capital over time has also had an impact on the region: For example, its re-emergence in recent decades as a major rice-exporting area has linked it inextricably to global markets and their vicissitudes. And most recently, the potential for sea level increases because of global warming has added a new threat. Because most of the region is on average only a few meters above sea level and because any increase of sea level will change the complex relationship between tides and down-river water flow, the Mekong Delta is one of the areas in the world most vulnerable to the effects of climate change. How governmental policy and resident populations have in the past and will in coming decades adapt to climate change as well as several other emerging or ongoing environmental and economic problems is the focus of this collection.

Book excerpt: Drifting, and yet full awake, I began to feel a warning breeze, chilling; enveloping: and so I looked up and when I did, I saw an ominous lone dark cloud, shadowing, floating East: I thought Nature; stirring, rustling leaves and winds to blast and swish across these sidewalk cobblestones with cloudbursts of raindrops; huge like crystals; to splash and splatter my face, soak, shape and to cling my body to my clothes. Benumbed, I lay there sensing; no savoring in the rain; drenched, and with the raindrops splattering, spreading their translucent colors to have me rhyme, 'Debbie Debbie weighing sounds round and round her womb, womb.
Book Synopsis The Tiger and the Hare by : Jane Miller Chai
Download or read book The Tiger and the Hare written by Jane Miller Chai and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2009-03-27 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Tiger and the Hare offers an exciting and unusual take on America’s Vietnam adventure. Author Jane Chai presents the thrilling story of a young American woman caught up in the seething intrigue of South Vietnam in “the early days” of 1962 and 1963, an absolutely critical period which set the stage---for better or worse---for the massive U.S. intervention that followed later. She fully captures the mood and flavor of that time. She deftly weaves real-life events and personalities into the story, adding not only credibility but unique insight to her tale. The book is in fact a masterful blend of fact and fiction, an important historical novel that for those of us who served there in those critical years is probably the only way the true story can be properly told. The Tiger and the Hare is a major contribution to that elusive understanding. James Rosenthal, Political Officer at the U.S. Embassy in Saigon, 1961-1965. The Tiger and the Hare goes a long way in illuminating how the U.S. became ensnared in a war in my country. Skillfully told, a young American female scholar’s enchantment with the history and culture of Vietnam conflicts with the rigid aims of her own country. This riveting tale of discovery describes two lunar years essential to understanding the subsequent years of war. Nguyen Van Canh, University of Saigon Professor of Law and Politics; Author, Vietnam Under Communism, 1975-1982, Hoover Institution Ms. Chai does an admirable job of evoking the issues and atmosphere of Vietnam in the early sixties. Calvin E. Mehlert, Foreign Service Officer (ret.), Aide to Edward G. Lansdale

Opportunities abound for the USGS to strategically pursue international science in the next 5-10 years that bears on growing worldwide problems having direct impact on the United States-climate and ecosystem changes, natural disasters, the spread of invasive species, and diminishing natural resources, to name a few.
