Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In past decades, urban water management practices focused on optimizing the design and operation of water distribution networks, wastewater collection systems, and water and wastewater treatment plants. However, municipalities are now faced with aging urban water infrastructures whose operation must be improved and expanded to maintain current high
Book Synopsis Nitrate Contamination by : Istvan Bogardi
Download or read book Nitrate Contamination written by Istvan Bogardi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nitrate content of drinking water is rising at an alarming rate in several regions of NATO countries and elsewhere in the world. The increase is due to lack of proper sewage treatment, and primarily to excess fertilizer application. Also, eutrophication in several coastal areas is triggered by high nitrate concentrations. The main purpose of this book is to integrate scientific knowledge related to exposure assessment, health consequences and control of nitrate contamination in water. The motivation is related to the magnitude, the possible adverse health effects, and the high cost of control ling nitrate contamination. Future research tasks are defined by an interaction among hydro logists, toxicologists and environmental engineers in an integrated framework for nitrate risk management. The target readership of this book is a mix of university colleagues, practitioners from both the private and public sectors and advanced graduate students working with the hydrological, health science or environmental engineering aspects of nitrate contamination. The main conclusions include: 1. For risk assessment purposes, knowledge and sufficiently accurate models are available to predict nitrate load and its fate in water under changes in land use. 2. Once agricultural exposure controls are implemented, the response times in ground water may be so long as to make controls unrealistic. 3. It is still unknown whether agricultural best management practice is a compromise between nitrate risk reduction and agricultural revenue. 4. The current drinking water guidelines of 10 mg/L NOrN need not be changed.

Book Synopsis Erosion and Sedimentation by : Pierre Y. Julien
Download or read book Erosion and Sedimentation written by Pierre Y. Julien and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-06-10 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second edition of this acclaimed, accessible textbook brings the subject of sedimentation and erosion up-to-date, providing an excellent primer on both fundamental concepts of sediment-transport theory and methods for practical applications. The structure of the first edition is essentially unchanged, but all the chapters have been updated, with several chapters reworked and expanded significantly. Examples of the new additions include the concept of added mass, the Modified Einstein Procedure, sediment transport by size fractions, sediment transport of sediment mixtures, and new solutions to the Einstein Integrals. Many new examples and exercises have been added. Erosion and Sedimentation is an essential textbook on the topic for students in civil and environmental engineering and the geosciences, and also as a handbook for researchers and professionals in engineering, the geosciences and the water sciences.
Book Synopsis Hydraulic Engineering: Emerging Trends and Technologies by : Will Shelton
Download or read book Hydraulic Engineering: Emerging Trends and Technologies written by Will Shelton and published by . This book was released on 2020-09-08 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hydraulic engineering is a sub-discipline of civil engineering that is concerned with the flow and conveyance of fluids. This field is particularly relevant in the design of water and sewage systems, which are important aspects of urban planning. It applies the principles of fluid mechanics to design strategies for the efficient storage, collection, measurement, regulation, transport and use of water. The architectural planning and design of spillways and outlet paths for dams, canals, culverts, irrigation structures and cooling water facilities are under the purview of hydraulic engineering. The use of computer-aided design and computational fluid dynamics, as well as GPS mapping and laser-based surveying tools have brought tremendous advancements in hydraulic engineering. This book elucidates the concepts and innovative models around prospective developments with respect to hydraulic engineering. The topics included in this book on hydraulic engineering are of utmost significance and bound to provide incredible insights to readers. It attempts to assist those with a goal of delving into this field.
