Book excerpt: Josie Dew's love of cycling has taken her across the world, travelling everywhere from Japan and Mexico to Iceland, India and Algeria. In her latest book, she sets off on another quirky and riotous ride, choosing to circumnavigate the coastline of the British Isles. And she discovers that her homeland can be as surprising and full of incident as anywhere she has ever been. Beginning in Portsmouth, Josie sets off in a clockwise direction after a Shetland grandmother warns her that she'll end up meeting the devil if she travels anti-clockwise. Through rain, hail, floods, bitter temperatures, minor earthquakes and dusty drought, Josie pedals on, eventually returning to Land's End to complete Stage One of her remarkably lengthy odyssey along 5,000 miles of seaside, estuaries, creeks and islands. But is all as it seems? Who is the mysterious builder who appears at all the wrong moments? Who are the two-wheeled taggers-on lurking in her wake? What did she find at Puckpool Point, Bozomzeal and Woon Gumpus? And how did Josie so badly miscalculate her approach to the seafront at Newhaven that she landed in France?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today's students have expressed a strong preference for multiple modes of information delivery, including visual, auditory and kinesthetic. Medical Terminology Doodles by Dr. Karen Sladyk is a unique book based on evidence that suggests that a multi-sensory approach that includes doodling can promote better knowledge retention than traditional methods in learning medical terminology. Medical Terminology Doodles offers 266 of the most common medical terms to explore and learn through doodling. By drawing or doodling related images, students will create permanent connections between the brain and the terms, as well as their root words, prefixes, and suffixes. Study hints, spelling hints, and sample illustrations are offered for each of the words, but students are also encouraged to personalize their learning by assigning meaning to the terms and creating their own “art.” Using visual cues to remember information will encourage students to review the material at hand and will also help them understand the way that terms connect to larger medical concepts. Medical Terminology Doodles is a must-have for students looking for a unique manner in which to engage with complicated scientific material. On the road to becoming a successful practitioner in the health professions, you can never underestimate the power of a doodle!

This book was released on 2021-09-16 with total page 2213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Slavery in the United States lasted more than two centuries. The adoption of the Thirteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution in December 1865 abolished slavery after the American Civil War. The first slaves were forcibly removed from Africa by British slave traders beginning in the early 1600s. Redoshi, later renamed Sally Smith, was the last surviving female slave brought to the U.S. from Africa. A Benoise war captive, she was illegally transported to the US (importing slaves having been outlawed 50 years prior). The last surviving male slave, Oluale Kossula (aka Cudjo Lewis), had been transported on the sale ship and was most likely part of the Yoruba people in Benin. The quality of a slave’s life depended completely on their master’s will. It was considered normal, for example, for masters to rape their slaves, who were considered their property. Slaves who escaped were branded, killed, or punished severely in other ways. Solomon Northup Twelve Years a Slave Booker T. Book excerpt: A four-thousand-year-old prophecy warned that when mankind had made certain advances over nature, it would face an unstoppable tide of evil unless certain bizarre events came to pass. Jake King, an American forestry consultant, chanced upon a medieval shield while tracing his English ancestry. The shield began to glow, drawing him into a glen where an ancient thornbush unfurled a bedraggled Merlin, magicked there fifteen hundred years ago. Merlin hailed the bewildered Jake as the prophesized reincarnation of King Arthur. Before he can gather his wits, Jake finds himself thrust into a series of unbelievable Arthurian adventures, confronting a man-eating giant, a fire-breathing dragon, marriage, and the devil himself. In parallel, Merlin is thrust into his unbelievable images of twenty-first-century England (cars, TV, telephones, etc). But the combination of his rusty magic and seventeenth-century English caused mayhem everywhere he trod, and nearly everybody he met was left teetering on the edge of insanity. Accordingly, his innocent quest to save the world elected him to Public Enemy Number 1. Could Arthur and Merlin fulfill the conditions of the prophecy and save both worlds?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about interjections and their transcultural issues. Challenging the marginalization of the past, the ubiquity of interjections and translational practices are presented in their multilingual and cross-cultural aspects. The survey widens the field of inquiry to a multi-genre and context-based perspective. The quanti-qualitative corpus has been processed on the base of topics of relevance and thematization. The range of examples varies from adaptation of novels into films, from Shakespeare, from Zulu oral epics to opera, from children’s narratives to cartoons, from migration literature to gangster and horror films and their audiovisual translation. The use of American Yiddish, Italian American, South African English, and Jamaican account for the controversial aspects of interjections as a universal phenomenon, and, conversely, as a pragmatic marker of identity in (post)colonial contexts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each week The New Yorker receives more than five hundred submissions from its regular cartoonists, who are all vying for one of the twenty coveted spots in the magazine. So what happens to the 75 percent of cartoons that don't make the cut? Some go back in a drawer, others go up on the refrigerator or into the filing cabinet...but the very best of all the rejects can be found right here in these pages. The Rejection Collection Vol. 2: The Cream of the Crap is the ultimate scrap heap of creative misfires -- from the lowbrow and the dirty to the politically incorrect and the weird, these rejects represent the best of the worst...in the best possible sense of the word. Handpicked by editor Matthew Diffee, these hilarious cartoons are accompanied by handwritten questionnaires and photographed self-portraits, providing a rare glimpse into the minds of the artists behind the rejection. With appendices that explore the top ten reasons why cartoons are rejected and examine the solitary nature of the job of cartooning -- plus a special bonus section of questions asked of and answered by cartoon editor Robert Mankoff -- this sequel to The Rejection Collection offers even deeper insight into the exercise in frustration, patience, and amusement that is being a New Yorker cartoonist. Warped, wicked, and wildly funny, The Rejection Collection Vol. 2 will appeal to every New Yorker fan -- and everyone with a taste for the absurd.
