Download or read book The Cardinals written by Michael J. Walsh and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2011 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although a highly visible part of the ecclesiastical furniture of the Roman Catholic Church and the Vatican for thirteen centuries, surprisingly little has been written about cardinals or (apart from some notable individual biographies), about the men who became papal princes . The cardinals of the Roman Church are the nearly men of Catholicism - those whose office since the 11th century has been chiefly to choose the Pope, following efforts to wrest this power from Rome s nobility and militia. This compelling history traces the origins and growth of the office of cardinal and tells the stories of some of the remarkable (for all kinds of reasons) men who have worn the red cap, coveted by some, refused on occasion and sometimes laid down in exchange for marriage, though one maverick got wed in his red hat. The Cardinals is an informative and entertaining look at the lives of some of the more colourful characters who have worn the cardinatial red or purple. It reveals an unlikely company of saints and villains, patrons of the arts and scholars, cardinals who might have been pope but who were blackballed, and cardinals who were deprived of the title because of their dissolute lives, doubtful opinions, or interference in papal policies. There are diplomats in these pages, statesmen, kingmakers and soldiers. There are members of royal and noble families, and the son of a Doge of Venice. And there are the cardinals whose fame simply lies in their goodness and their care of the dioceses entrusted to them.

Book Synopsis The Westminster Cardinals by : Michael J. Walsh
Download or read book The Westminster Cardinals written by Michael J. Walsh and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2008-11-27 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book will look at the lives of ten men who have been appointed by Rome to head the Roman Catholic Church in the United Kingdom. The biographies will be set against the background of four main topics: 1. in 1850 RCs were still a marginalized community, an uneasy amalgam of recusant families Irish immigrants and distinguished converts. The challenge was to create an indigenous Catholicism. 2. The Church in Britain had to contend with a constituency which tended to be poor and illiterate. Part of the Archbishops` drive was to boost education and thus drive Catholics out of poverty 3. Relations with the Church of England and the wish to preserve Catholic identity. 4. Catholics were and are increasingly a significant identifiable section of British society. The Archbishops of Westminster has attempted to express their voice in the national debates- whether successfully or not is an issue discussed in this fascinating book. The present Catholic hierarchy have often taken issue with the diktats coming from Rome on many issues - liturgy, divorced and remarried Catholics, the ordination of married men. If Rome appoints a man who is more inclined to kowtow to Rome this could be bad news for liberal minded progressive people of any religious belief or none. It is generally agreed that Hume outshone Carey as a national spiritual leader. How will the new appointment rate with the Chief Rabbi and Rowan Williams also in contention.

Book excerpt: The leading Catholic commentator and historian Michael Walsh throws open the mysterious and secretive world of the Cardinals of the Roman Catholic Church. They are Catholicism's 'nearly men' who never became Pope but who have been the power behind the papal throne throughout the ages. This eminently readable and often entertaining account tells the stories of some 200 outstanding (for all kinds of reasons) cardinals from the beginnings of the office in the 8th century, through the Middle Ages when cardinals ranked with royal princes, to more recent distinguished wearers of the red cap - among them the greatly missed Basil Hume and Joseph Bernadin. Here we meet the kingmaker cardinals, the politically ambitious, the saintly, the venial, the scholarly, the pastors, and the cardinals with wives and children.

Download or read book In the Ring written by Robert S. Bennett and published by Crown. This book was released on 2008-02-19 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert S. Bennett has been a lawyer for more than forty years. In that time, he’s taken on dozens of high-profile and groundbreaking cases and emerged as the go-to guy for the nation’s elite. Bob Bennett gained international recognition as one of America’s best lawyers for leading the defense of President Bill Clinton in the Paula Jones case. But long before, and ever since, representing a sitting president, he has fought for justice for many famous (and some now infamous) clients. This is his story. Born in Brooklyn and an amateur boxer in his youth, Bennett has always brought his street fighter’s mentality to the courtroom. His case history is a who’s who of figures who have dominated legal headlines: super lobbyist Tommy Corcoran, former Secretaries of Defense Clark Clifford and Caspar Weinberger, Marge Schott, and, most recently, New York Times reporter Judith Miller and former World Bank president Paul Wolfowitz. Bennett also served as special counsel to the Senate during the ABSCAM and Keating Five scandals and was a leading member of the National Review Board for the Protection of Children & Young People, created by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops in response to the sex abuse allegations. Taking the reader deep within his most intriguing and difficult cases, In the Ring shows how Bennett has argued for what’s right, won for his clients, and effected his share of change on the system. This is an intimate and compelling memoir of one lawyer’s attempt to fight hard and fair.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Professional football is the most popular sport in the United States today. With so many famous players from the past and present, some of whom achieved notoriety because of a persona they created, there are fans who have also made a name for themselves by either their work and loyalty for their team, or by creating an "alter ego" with respect to how they cheer or support their team. Some have incredibly wild and outrageous outfits. On game days, some of these diehard fans take longer to get themselves ready for games than the players they cheer for! The face paint, the outrageous outfits, the chants and cheers, and the attention to detail are what make these fans unique. During football season, these diehard fans can be seen each weekend as they showcase themselves in support of their team in front of hundreds of thousands of viewers worldwide. In 1998, Visa sponsored a national contest to find the wildest, most loyal, and most intriguing fans for each team in the league. The award was entitled, "The Visa Hall of Fans" Award as fans were chosen from each team based on their submitted essays and photos. Contestants had to explain why they should represent their respective team in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio. At the time, a special wing in the Hall was created to honor these diehard fans. Visa awarded plaques to the winners - originally at the Hall, and later in front of the hometown fans at each team's stadium. The Hall of Fame displayed the plaques for a year until the new class of fans was selected and their plaques were displayed. At that point, the prior year's winners had their names placed on a permanent wall plaque in the "Hall of Fans" wing of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
