Book excerpt: In 1996, the Italian Great White Shark Data Bank began collecting and recording encounters in the Mediterranean between great white sharks and boats, bathers, divers, fishermen and others, from the Middle Ages to the present. This meticulously researched work presents the study’s findings for the first time, releasing a trove of information on the great white’s size, distribution, habitat, behavior, reproduction, diet, fisheries and attacks on humans. With 596 records of great white sharks from the entire Mediterranean Sea, this volume represents the most complete and comprehensive study on the species in that region and constitutes a rich resource for historians, scientists, fishermen, and divers.

This book was released on 2009-03-26 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Author has condensed virtually everything that is known about the great white sharks that are preserved in European museums in this book. Available data of 105 great white sharks from 45 institutions is presented herein. Most material consists of taxidermied specimens and jaws. Most specimens with known capture locations come from the Mediterranean Sea. The majority of specimens are very old. The jaws belonging to the Biblioteca Ambrosiana in Milan, dated from at least 1640-1660, are the oldest white shark material preserved in Europe. The largest specimens of which parts are preserved in any European museum may be those of which skeletal parts are preserved in the Museo di Anatomia Comparata of Rome, Italy, and the Museo Zoologico "La Specola" of Florence, Italy. The cast of a 5.65 m female great white shark preserved in the Musée cantonal de Zoologie of Lausanne, is the world’s largest that has been reconstructed directly from a whole specimen. The largest skin-mounted specimen is a 5.22 m female preserved in the Museo Civico di Storia Naturale of Trieste. The 1.50 m female preserved in the Senckenberg Forschungsinstitut und Naturmuseum of Frankfurt is the smallest taxidermied white shark preserved in Europe. The publication also includes a concise general account of white shark evolution, anatomy, physiology, reproduction, feeding, attacks on humans and fishery. Up-to-date literature references are included. Extensively researched, this encyclopedic account is enhanced by many photographs and drawings, that bring to life the extraordinary world of the great white shark. The ease of reading of the book and its thoroughness will make it a welcomed addition to any naturalist's library.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book invites snorkelers and divers on an educational visit to the most important ecosystems of the Mediterranean Sea. Keystone species from brown algae to dolphins are presented in their marine habitats and understood as part of a complex ecological system. Instead of grouping animals and plants taxonomically, we have organised them according to the eight main habitats of the Mediterranean Sea. Our journey starts with different types of rocky grounds, then takes you further to the Mediterranean’s sandy and muddy grounds, and finally ends with the fish and dolphins of the blue open sea. You will be introduced to 220 ecologically significant animal and plant species via the texts of Daniel Abed-Navandi, a long-time lecturer on the biodiversity of the Mediterranean Sea at the University of Vienna, and the photographs of Georg Glaeser, the master behind the camera, who captures marine life on the spot.

Are great white sharks more dangerous to people? Or, are people more dangerous to the great white shark? In Great White Shark, you will learn what is fact and what is fiction where the great white is concerned. Find out what it usually eats. Learn why it sometimes bites people, yet does not always kill the person it bites. Will the great white shark survive the dangers in its habitat, including fishing vessels and tourists?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sharks are among the most persecuted animals on Earth. Nicole’s block-buster story lifts the lid on the shocking details of the trade in shark fins, and raises awareness of the plight of sharks in the 21st century. In November 2003 a female Great White Shark was tagged near Dyer Island in South Africa. Her tag popped up in February 2004, just south of Western Australia. The shark, later to be named Nicole (after shark enthusiast Nicole Kidman), had swum an epic 11,000 km. Scientists were even more surprised when she was identified back in South Africa in August 2004 – she had covered 22,000 km in less than nine months, using pinpoint navigation both ways. Since then, many Great Whites have been tagged and have shown a propensity for undertaking long migrations – but none has yet matched Nicole's amazing feat. This story incorporates a blend of science, actual events and real people, along with conjecture as to what might have happened on Nicole's momentous journey.

Author of Jaws Peter Benchley and film director Steven Spielberg certainly did, for below the waves lies a world we neither see nor understand; an alien world where we are but the briefest of visitors. The Shark that Walks on Land uncovers tales of ancient and modern mariners, with stories of sea serpents, mermaids and mermen, sea dragons, and the true identity of the legendary kraken. But this book contains more than just a medley of maritime myths and mysteries for marine biologists; it celebrates wonderful discoveries by blending the unknown and the familiar in an entertaining miscellany of facts, figures and anecdotes about the myriad creatures that inhabit the oceans. Along the way we meet the giants, the most dangerous, the oddballs and the record breakers – and the shark that really does walk on land!

The reality of shark attack includes all these nightmares, and more. Few fears in the human imagination can compare with being eaten alive by this baleful killer fish. All of these things happen, usually without warning, to real people just like you or I. But they happen very, very rarely, and are but a tiny part of the truth behind this mysterious and misunderstood creature. Shark Attack explains the reality behind the killer facade.
