Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Climbing, coasting or gentle pedaling, cyclists want routes with hills, or they crave level routes, or perhaps both. Some that I have had conversations with need to know about the history of places along the route. All of these tourists/explorers have an opportunity to satisfy these requirements with this guidebook. The sixteen routes mapped and described here travel through many flat areas along Mediterranean beaches. Other routes are over bluffs near the Pyrenees. The route locations stretch from the Spanish border with France, to 30 kilometers northeast of Beziers. Politically, this is the Languedoc-Roussillon Region. These routes cover and cross much of the known history of Europe. Neanderthal Man emerged after the most recent ice age somewhat north of these routes. Then came Cro-Magnon. Much later the Celts were here, who were then subjugated for more than four hundred years by the Romans. Some of the people who changed and shaped this part of France include the Carthaginian Hannibal Barca, Roman proconsul Domitius Ahenobarbus (he of the Via Domitia - Roman Road - built in 118 Before the Common Era), Visigoth leader Alaric, Charlemagne and his grandfather Charles Martel, Louis the German through Louis XIV, Cardinal Richelieu, along with Napoleon Bonaparte and Napoleon III. Pierre-Paul Riquet's great seventeenth century achievement, the Canal du Midi, relied on the ingenuity and guts of the Region's people. No, I did not overlook restaurants. The route maps have a symbol near where I spotted one or two that seemed decent, although this guide doesn't attempt a review - tastes and preferences are personal. Typically the chef owns his or her own restaurant in France. Given the many choices, the local population goes to the better ones."

This book was released on 2016-09-16 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 17 routes in this guidebook explores 29 very grand chateaux and a royal abbaye. Between these châteaux and their communities spread through the valleys of the Loire, Cher, Vienne, and Indre Rivières are gently rolling hills and some thick forests. This guidebook is much more than cycling, it also delves into the history of these châteaux. As in much of the rest of France, the Loire Valley has paved bicycle paths separated from auto and truck traffic. Through metropolitan areas, there are painted bicycle lanes, often shared with busses (which seems somewhat irrational to me). In addition to discussions of Renaissance Architecture and the Loire Rivière, there are 44 short discussions about the towns and châteaux the routes pass. Included are 203 photographs and 18 two-page maps. Also, there are 12 town and châteaux graphics. As always "I DID IT MY WAY." Thanks Frank. Basic data are included on selecting a community and a gîte, bringing your bike or renting, having a vehicle, driving in France, what to bring, and buying groceries. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This guidebook describes a 240km cycle ride along the length of the Canal du Midi in southern France. Starting at Toulouse in the Haute Garonne and finishing at Sète on the Mediterranean Coast, the route is divided into five stages of about 50km. It is a flat, car-free and picturesque route mainly on the towpath, and is suitable for all abilities. The guide is written for those who want to explore the canal and visit attractions along the way. There are lots of optional detours to sites of interest near the canal, as well as six longer excursions including fortified Carcassone, Roman Narbonne, Vendres lagoon and the Portiragnes marshes. Detailed route descriptions are crammed with additional information about points of interest passed, and 1:200,000 scale maps clearly show the route for each stage of the way. Begun in 1666 the Canal du Midi is one of the world's most picturesque waterways and a World Heritage Site. This is 'La France Profonde', a region rich in history and culture, as seen in the grand homes and chateaux that grace the water's edge, and the fascinating Cathar strongholds of Carcassone, Lastours and Minerve.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geographically, this guidebook focuses on the Roman Provence Region of France of the northern Gard and western Vaucluse Departments, the Drôme Department north and east into the Rhône Alpes, and the southern Ardèche Department. The routes start from three locations: Crest in the Drôme, Vallon-Pont-d'Arc in the Ardèche and Pont du Gard west of Avignon. The Gorges de la Baume & Cirque de Combe Laval route is the outlier due to the staggering beauty of the area. Why this area of France? Not for the industrial Rhône Valley. But, if you wander 20 to 30 kilometers east or west of the Rhône Valley you will find the medieval hilltop villages, deep gorges with rushing rivers, Roman structures and very hospitable people that want to help. Fifteen routes are mapped in detailed color with elevation profiles and exacting, step-by-step directions (data gathered to the nearest 0.2 kilometer). There are 202 color photographs for these surroundings. Motorists have not changed in rural France. They are still surprisingly (for a North American) courteous toward cyclists. You can always stop beside the narrow, paved roads in these routes for a break and not be concerned by traffic. You may buy lavender honey, fresh asparagus and strawberries from the farmer, a bottle of wine at a vineyard or olive oil in a morning market. How about riding across the 2,000-year-old, dry laid Pont du Gard aqueduct, the largest constructed by the Romans? The list of experiences is extensive. You will want to come back. Specifics are here for unstressed travel to this area, arriving relaxed. Includes data on selecting a community, gîtes, bikes, renting a vehicle, driving in France, what to bring, buying groceries and a bit on restaurants. There are fifteen cycling routes mapped and profiled. Each itinerary discusses a few villages and points of interest along the route. All circuits are on paved roads, except for three kilometers on a partly gravel, partly potholed stretch used to avoid some traffic. Motor vehicle traffic on these routes is light. To optimize your vacation or holiday time, the guide helps to anticipate and cope with sources of travel stress and manage costs. To develop your awareness, it also incorporates 69 notes on history, people, geography, structures and geology. In addition to the print format, the guide is available for Amazon(r) Kindle and Apple(r) iPad devices. Details: 102 pages; 11" x 8.5"; English; 15 two page color route maps; a single page color overview map; 2 color town maps Also available is a companion guide, ROMAN PROVENCE & RHÔNE ALPES QUEUE SHEETS. There are 16 cycling routes mapped and profiled. The guide includes 53 thoughts on some villages, a canal, rivers, historical people and points of interest along the way. Included with each route is the latest method for listing Waypoints that locates its longitude and latitude in degrees, minutes and seconds (to the hundredth), and in digital format. Elevation data was acquired every 200 meters on each route and new profiles drafted. As with all other BICYCLE YOUR FRANCE guidebooks, this guide also offers a companion, QUEUE SHEETS, with just the Waypoint GPS located listings, route maps and elevation profile. Details: 109 pages; 11" x 8.5"; English; 16 two-page color route maps; one single page color overview map; 197 color photographs and illustrations. Route maps are presented in two halves in 800x1260 pixels appropriate for the 7" and 8.9" Kindle Fire HD. Smaller graphics and photographs are in 800x1260 pixels. You can handle any and all of these sixteen routes, from the highest paved road in the Pyrénées to the flat woods through the Médoc. It all depends on your lungs, thighs, patience and proper selection of grandparents. All the routes are through the Aquitaine Region of southwest France with its extraordinary history. The jagged, snow-capped peaks of the Pyrénées are breathtaking, physically and emotionally. But this great range is very approachable. In addition to the routes way up four mountain passes, two routes utilize the Piste Cyclable Roger Labadie, and four routes follow the cycle path along the Canal de Garonne. Visit Eleanor of Aquitaine's city of Bordeaux, King Henry IV's château in Nérac, ask about Richard the Lionheart's chamber overlooking the Eymet central square, and walk around the last battle of the Wars of Religion in Castillion-la-Bataille. Then throw in Castillonnès, Agen, Villeneuve-sur-Lot, Pau and Oloron-Ste-Marie. This becomes a journey through the Middle Ages. Basic data are included on selecting a community, finding and renting a gîte, bringing your bike or renting a good one, having or renting a vehicle, driving in France, what to bring, buying groceries and something on restaurants. With each new guidebook I become more convinced that the best way to engage totally with a region is to bicycle it. Get out there you cycling pilgrims.
