Book Synopsis Gathering the NeXt Generation by : Nathan Humphrey
Download or read book Gathering the NeXt Generation written by Nathan Humphrey and published by Church Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2000-06-26 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays was written by a group of priests that are relatively rare in the Episcopal Church—priests under 35 years of age. In 1997 only 296 Episcopal clergy were from the group commonly known as Generation X; they comprise only 3.5% of the ordained people in full time ministry in the Church. Inspired by that statistic some GenX priests and seminarians organized a conference called Gathering the NeXt Generation, which was held at Virginia Theological Seminary in June 1997. These essays, while not the actual papers given at the conference, are the result of that conversation and the ones that continue among GenX priests in the Episcopal Church. The range of issues for GenX priests and for their ministry into the new millennium are important ones for the whole church. As we approach a clergy shortage (due to retirements) in the Episcopal Church, will we continue to discourage young men and women from entering the ordination process, asking them to come back when they have some life experience? Some contributors also consider new models of ministry: the return of the concept of curacy, the possibilities for bi-vocational ministry and the renewal of campus ministry. Others help us look through the eyes of GenX priests and parishioners, including those who are Black or pregnant, and see the Church through a very different lens. For all who care about the future of the Episcopal Church, this volume, written in the voices of those who will be our future—is a must-read. Contributors include: J. Scott Barker, Jennifer Lynn Baskerville, Daniel Emerson Hall, N. J. A. Humphrey, Richard Kew, Jamie L'Enfant, Christopher Martin, Beth Maynard, Kate Moorehead, Benjamin Shambaugh, Rock H. Schuler, Margaret K. Schwarzer, and Nancy Vogele.

Book excerpt: Richard Maffeo has written a heartfelt and heartwarming commentary on the Nicene Creed. His words and story will help every reader recognize the Risen Lord on their journey of life. - Fr. Michael McDermott, Pastor, St. Charles Borromeo, Tacoma, WA. Rich Maffeo provides us with a wonderful meditation on the fundamental profession of our Catholic faith. These meditations come out of a long and reflective spiritual journey that has taken him from Evangelical Protestant churches to a faithful and practicing member of the Roman Catholic community. This is a must read for laymen and women who seek a better understanding of Catholic faith in relationship to the experiences of daily living. Richard shares his journey and faith so each of us may grow together as a Holy People. - Fr. Thomas FX Hoar, SSE, Ph.D, President of St. Edmund's Retreat, Mystic, CT. For more than three decades, Richard Maffeo worshiped in evangelical Protestant churches. He earned his baccalaureate and masters degrees from Pentecostal schools. His religious articles have appeared in dozens of Christian publications. In 2003, a friend challenged him to study Catholic doctrine and compare it to what he already knew of Scripture and Church history. What he discovered caught him by surprise. Two years later, during the Easter Vigil of 2005, Richard was received into the Catholic Church. Richard and his wife, Nancy, attend St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, in Tacoma, Washington, where he serves as a catechist for sixth graders and a Lay Eucharistic Minister. He and his wife are married more than thirty-two years and have three grown children. This is his first book. His second - A Journey of Reflection - has a plannedpublication date in 2008.

Book Synopsis Celebrating the Eucharist by : Patrick Malloy
Download or read book Celebrating the Eucharist written by Patrick Malloy and published by Church Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2007-11-01 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this first new Eucharistic customary in nearly 20 years, Patrick Malloy, an Episcopal priest and liturgical scholar, presents a clear, illustrated guide for the presider and other leaders of the liturgy, contemporary in approach but based on ancient and classic principles of celebration. The 1979 Book of Common Prayer, like its predecessors, is long on telling the Church what to say, and short on telling it what to do. This leaves those who "choreograph" Prayer Book liturgies with a complex task and a powerful influence over the faith of the Church. The author begins with a concise theology of the liturgy that underpins all of his specific directives in the book. Contents include: Theological and liturgical principles; Liturgical ministry and liturgical ministers; Liturgical space; Vesture, vessels, and other liturgical objects; The liturgical year; The shape of the liturgy; The sung liturgy and singing during the liturgy; The order of the Eucharist (the "heart" of the book); and The celebration of Baptism during the Eucharist.
