Book excerpt: When someone you love is hospitalized, it can be scary-even terrifying-for the patient and for family and friends. A hospital may seem like a foreign land. Sounds, smells, and the culture are unfamiliar; even the medical terminology sounds like a different language. Understanding the hospital environment and knowing how to navigate its complicated pathways can make you a strong champion for your loved one. You are as critical to your loved one's recovery as the doctors and nurses. Your role is different, but vital. In some cases, you can make the difference between life and death. Hospital Warrior de-mystifies the process and provides the tools, understanding and insight you need to get the best care for your loved one. Based on Bonnie Friedman's own experiences fighting for her husband's healthcare needs for more than 24 years and through 14 separate hospitalizations, Hospital Warrior lays out in direct, simple terms hard-learned and time-tested tactics to help ensure a loved one's medical needs are met. Hospital Warrior also includes checklists and interviews with doctors and other healthcare professionals who provide essential tips and advice for the reader. If you have a loved one in the hospital, don't leave home without this book. Praise for Hospital Warrior "Hospital Warrior isn't just about advocating; it's about saving lives. Bonnie Friedman delves deep into the hospital setting, and provides valuable insights, wisdom and tips to help readers get the best possible medical care for the ones they love. She knows what she's talking about and it shows. Read her book before someone you know has to go to the hospital." -- Heidi Godman, health journalist, host of Health Check with Heidi Godman on WSRQ-FM, Sarasota, FL. "Hospital Warrior is more than a how-to book on how to advocate for a loved one. It is like having a smart, savvy friend with you every step of the way, helping you get the best hospital care for someone you love. Bonnie Friedman has learned the ropes, and she'll help you learn them too." - Mindy Utay, LCSW, JD, couples and family therapist, psychoanalyst, writer, lecturer, official blogger for the Huffington Post "Ms. Friedman has assembled a well-researched guide to help family and friends navigate the complex environment of modern hospitals. Packed with helpful information, Hospital Warrior was invaluable to me during my husband's three-week stay in intensive care following heart surgery that led to a stroke. The book helped me decipher medical terms, understand treatments and identify appropriate questions to ask amidst the emotional turmoil I faced when my husband was seriously ill. The extensive reference section was also helpful as my husband passed through acute rehab to sub-acute care during recovery." - Susan Fleming, Annandale, VA

Book excerpt: Reshape your body and mind by eating light during the day and filling up at night—the core tenet of this revolutionary nutrition program based on survival science. Join Ori Hofmekler as he turns to history for a solution to obesity and its attendant ailments—back to the primal habits of early cultures like nomads, hunter-gatherers, the Greeks, and the Romans. Drawing on both survival science and historical data, Hofmekler argues that robust health and a lean, strong body can best be achieved by mimicking the classical warrior mode of cycling—working and eating sparingly (undereating) during the day and filling up at night. A radical yet surprisingly simple lifestyle overhaul, the Warrior Diet Nutritional Program and the Controlling Fatigue Training Program can literally reshape your body! Inside, you’ll learn how to: • Find ideal fuel foods and food combinations to reduce body fat • Gain strength, speed, and resilience to fatigue through special drills • Prepare warrior meals and recipes • Increase sex drive, potency, and animal magnetism • Personalize the diet for your needs Featuring forewords by Fit for Life author Harvey Diamond and Fat That Kills author Dr. Udo Erasmus, The Warrior Diet shows readers weary of fad diets how to attain enduring vigor, explosive strength, a better appearance, and increased vitality and health.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "An important and riveting story of a 19th-century feminist and change agent. Starita successfully balances the many facts with vivid narrative passages that put the reader inside the very thoughts and emotions of La Flesche." —Chicago Tribune On March 14, 1889, Susan La Flesche Picotte received her medical degree—becoming the first Native American doctor in U.S. history. She earned her degree thirty-one years before women could vote and thirty-five years before Indians could become citizens in their own country. By age twenty-six, this fragile but indomitable Native woman became the doctor to her tribe. Overnight, she acquired 1,244 patients scattered across 1,350 square miles of rolling countryside with few roads. Her patients often were desperately poor and desperately sick—tuberculosis, small pox, measles, influenza—families scattered miles apart, whose last hope was a young woman who spoke their language and knew their customs. This is the story of an Indian woman who effectively became the chief of an entrenched patriarchal tribe, the story of a woman who crashed through thick walls of ethnic, racial and gender prejudice, then spent the rest of her life using a unique bicultural identity to improve the lot of her people—physically, emotionally, politically, and spiritually. Joe Starita's A Warrior of the People is the moving biography of Susan La Flesche Picotte’s inspirational life and dedication to public health, and it will finally shine a light on her numerous accomplishments.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Legacy of Lessons Learned: Landstuhl Regional Medical Center During Wartime, 2001-2014: For over 25 years, Landstuhl Regional Medical Center (LRMC) has served as a model of "selfless service," stepping up to the demands of a suddenly increased rate of traumatically injured service members arriving from the battlefield. From Operations Desert Storm/Desert Shield; through the attacks in Somalia, the Khobar Towers, and USS Co≤ to the recent conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq, LRMC has stood at the forefront of military healthcare, receiving our Nation's and our partners' wounded and ill from battlefields and contingencies across multiple theaters. From a community hospital providing routine healthcare delivery to personnel stationed in Europe and their families before 9/11, LRMC transitioned into a Level 1, triservice, integrated trauma center, providing lifesaving care to tens of thousands of evacuated service members, in addition to handling all the associated needs of these patients, from payroll assistance to chaplain services, service and unit liaison support, and veteran service organization support, as well as delivering ongoing healthcare to beneficiaries across Europe, Africa, and Asia. The goal of this text is to share the lessons learned by LRMC staff in converting from a peacetime to wartime footing, serving as a guide for US military hospitals in similar situations in the future. The innovations and solutions planned and implemented so successfully by LRMC staff will assist future military medical and line leaders in maintaining the highest quality of healthcare services for future generations of our service men and women in combat, improving upon the historically high survival rates seen in these conflicts. Two races in total conflict over a planet the size of Jupiter. A world encompassing unlimited resources that could sustain any race for life. Protagonists have lived on this world since the beginning of time, understanding its contents and its uses as this planet is on one side of their galaxy. The other side of this galaxy, the antagonist's planet, is the size of Mars, almost barren like the Sahara Desert. Antagonists want to claim this new world for themselves by getting rid of these humanoids, taking over their planet. Since their world's condition is deteriorating, they spread their dark wings in their own system, claiming the other four worlds, and taking their culture and their precious treasures like water, which life needs to thrive. To strike a blow on these humanoids, antagonists ignite a vile plot by sending three King Cruisers on a special mission, staking entitlement on this world and its entire system.
