Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Temperature in Diseases: A Manual of Medical Thermometry I may, perhaps, be allowed a few words of introduction to the following pages. For the last sixteen years my attention has been uninterruptedly directed to the course pursued by the temperature in diseases of various kinds. The thermometer has been regularly employed at least twice daily, and in febrile patients from four to eight times a day, and even oftener, in special circumstances, for all the patients in my wards. I have also experienced the applica bility of this method of investigation in very numerous cases in private practice. In this way I have gradually got together a mate rial which comprises many thousand complete cases of thermometric observations of disease, and millions of separate readings of the temperature. The more my observations were multiplied the more firmly rooted did my conviction become of the unparalleled value of this method of investigation, as giving an accurate and reliable insight into the condition of the sick. Not a few of the results obtained have already been published, partly by myself and partly by my assistants and the students who attended my clinique. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1876 edition. Excerpt: ... the temperature rises (even only relatively to the other symptoms), it announces the cessation of the alvine discharges. A rapid and considerable fall and a rapid and considerable rise of temperature are warnings of death; on the contrary, the less the temperature fluctuates the more probability of recovery. During the algide stage, the temperature of the skin falls indeed very low, 35C. = 95 F. The axillary fluctuates less than the internal. Rapid changes of surface temperature are threatening. A low temperature slowly and steadily rising, with only slight fluctuations which hardly exceed the normal, is of good omen. Lowest of all may be the temperature under the tongue; in asphyxia it seldom exceeds 31 C. = 87.8 F.; even cases at 26 C. = 78.8 F. have recovered; none below. In the post-choleraic, or reaction period, the temperature returns from its abnormal condition to its nonne again, yet moderately febrile elevations are not dangerous-, but must awake the attentiou; higher elevations of temperature are sure signs of complications and local affections, which narrow the prospect of recovery. Very high temperatures are induced by parotitis, erysipelas, and more rarely by atypical pneumonia. Roseola and other exanthems do not always induce a rise of temperature. A normal or quasi-normal temperature in the tost-choleraic stage is no guaranty of recovery; but 42 is considered mortal. In a typhoidal reaetion the temperature may be normal or a little higher, or rise above, and take a remittent course; the are stormy cases; if they do not end by death at once, they ar much protracted. Parenchymatous nephritis is one of the sequels in both forms of reaction. The most unfavorable omen in the post-choleraic period k when a normal or elevated...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The physiology of man is a complex subject. Unfortunately the regulation of temperature in the human body is not always well explained in textbooks. Many conference proceedings on the subject have been produced that give excellent detail on research topics. However, the subject matter is rarely presented as a composite whole. New technology has broadened the scope of methods available for studying body temperature. Thermography in particular has made it possible to record in real time the temperature distribution of large areas of the body surface. Modem image processing methods permit dynamic studies to be carried out and detailed analyses made retrospectively-a tremendous advance over the complex and slow techniques formerly used by physiologists. Yet although the associa tion between disease and temperature is as old as medicine itself, beyond the implicit faith in the clinical mercury thermometer, other measuring techniques are finding a slow acceptance. This book is designed to put into perspective the critical factors that make up "body temperature. " Body temperature cannot be viewed as a static entity but rather must be seen as a dynamic process. An understanding of this phenomenon is important to all who use thermal imaging and measuring techniques in clinical medi cine. These methods have, in recent years, brought engineers, physi cists, technicians, and clinicians together. Inevitably, however, there v vi Preface are gaps and overlaps in technology and understanding.
