This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The advances in the field of anaesthesiology and reanimation have contributed in all developed countries to the decrease in deaths occurring on the operating table (exitus in tabula), from the ratio 1: 100 (in the nineteenth century) down to approximately 1: 1000 (in the first half of the twentieth century) and finally to approxi mately 1: 10 000 (nowadays). Numerous human lives were saved not only through the intro duction of new medicine and methods but even more so by better training for the doctors and nurses who apply these new techni ques. I am happy about the splendid initiative of my student and friend Georg Kamm, which has now made these advances acces sible to the developing countries. He knows very well how to make his colleagues understand the theory and the practical side of modern anaesthesiology, under the most difficult conditions and in a completely different world, to such an extent that to day in his country all of his patients are given the benefit of the advances of medicine. There is nothing more rewarding for an academic teacher than to see how his students continue developing his ideas and spread them far and wide. I am therefore happy and proud to write this foreword for Georg Kamm, one of the pioneers of anaesthesiology in Africa.

Book Synopsis Public Health in the British Empire by : Ryan Johnson
Download or read book Public Health in the British Empire written by Ryan Johnson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-03-12 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last several decades, historians of public health in Britain’s colonies have been primarily concerned with the process of policy making in the upper echelons of the medical and sanitary administrations. Yet it was the lower level staff that formed the backbone of public health systems in the colonies. Although they constituted the bases of many colonies’ public health machinery, there is no consolidated study of these individuals to date. Public Health in the British Empire addresses this gap by bringing together historians studying intermediary and subordinate staff across the British Empire. Along with investigating the duties and responsibilities of medical and non-medical intermediary and subordinate personnel, the contributors to this volume show how the subjectivity of these agents influenced the manner in which they discharged their duties and how this in turn shaped policy. Even those working as low level assistants and aids were able to affect policy design. In this way, Public Health in the British Empire brings into sharp relief the disaggregated nature of the empire, thereby challenging the understanding of the imperial project as an enterprise conceived of and driven from the center.

Download or read book Health and the Developing World written by John Bryant and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2019-06-30 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The provision of adequate health care for an entire population is a task of critical importance and awesome difficulty, particularly in underdeveloped nations. This forthright book examines the aims of health care programs and suggests some realistic solutions to the obstacles that must be overcome. Based on the work of a survey team sponsored by The Rockefeller Foundation, the study analyzes health problems on a world scale, whenever possible using examples from countries observed. Dr. Bryant advocates a systems-analysis approach to national health planning, pointing out the interrelationships of health planning and national development. He gives special attention to manpower needs, and develops the concept of a health team that would include paramedical as well as professional personnel. He also proposes a plan for medical education that would be devoted to meeting a particular country's needs and related to its system of health care. The author's findings and recommendations are essential reading for everyone concerned with the health and development of emerging countries. Written in a clear, compelling style, the book is enhanced by illustrations by the young Thai artist, Praphan Srisouta.
