The patient who had the appendectomy had been receiving 8 units of protamine insulin before the operation. Afterwards, no insulin was needed while the patient was in the hos pital on a lower caloric diet. The day after the child returned to the camp on a full diet, the fasting blood sugar was 270 mg., but without any insulin this was down to 150 mg. By pm. The blood sugar remained within normal limits and no insulin was needed up until the time of discharge, which was 2 weeks after the operation. All the other patients were dis charged on an increased dosage from that ad ministered when first at camp. A child of three years of age, demanding mechanical relief, with a fatal termination. I saw this Child at the request of Dr. Mallan. It was after twelve at night that I was called to see the child with Dr. Mallan. The boy had been sick for sev eral days with what appeared a simple laryngitis with slight audi ble respiration. During the twenty-four hours preceding my visit the breathing had become more and more labored. The child's condition demanded immediate relief, which was given through the introduction of an intubation tube. The voice was only slightly hoarse. In order to safeguard the child, antitoxin was also administered. Culture proved negative. Child died on the second day after intubation, from pneumonia. Cases are reported which have ruptured into the pleura with a resultant empyema, into the lung causing lung abscess, and into a bronchus with drainage by this route and eventfial recovery. The abscess may rupture into the general peritoneal cavity, the stomach, small bowel (though this is rare), into the colon, or even through the skin of the anterior abdominal wall. P'ericardial effusion, liver abscess and perinephritic abscess are also reported as com plications. The rarity of rupture into the bowel is understood when we realize that the bowel has little opportunity to come into contact with the abscess because the stomach and liver separ ate them. Lockwood states that in somewhat less than one-third of the neglected cases the abscesses either resolve or open spontaneously. Death occurs from toxemia and the general weak ness and inanition.
