Book excerpt: Excerpt from Medals and Decorations of the British Army and Navy, Vol. 2 The fact that the naval and military forces of the Crown which had taken part in the Peninsula War, and in contemporaneous operations in other parts of the world, had not generally received any decoration commemorative of their services, whilst all the army which fought at Waterloo had received a medal, appears to have given rise to a feeling of dissatisfaction which, although it did not become the subject of official discussion, was for many years ventilated in military circles and in the press. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Britain will always be grateful to her Navy for making her an empire, “on which the sun would never set”. It was the British Navy, which time and again, had been solely responsible for routing the forces of the various kingdoms in the world. And it was these acts of heroism by the valiant members of the nautical forces of the British Empire, which deserve more than perhaps just a mere mention. These acts have gone on to win various prestigious medals and other decorative honours. In this book, the author WH Long collates these stories of heroism from the various books and journals, which have long gone out of print. While the stories behind these medals may have been erased from records, they will forever be entrenched in the minds of a grateful British folk. These medals do not merely record an event, but they have a story to tell – a story of valour, courage, determination and patriotism. A must have book for a military enthusiast.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Short Histories of the Territorial Regiments of the British Army: Including the Names of the Officers and Soldiers Who Have Won the Victoria Cross, or the Distinguished Conduct Medal The Territorial Regiments of the British Army are those Infantry corps which, in 1881, were given a definite geo graphical connection, With an appropriate territorial title in place of their old numbers, and so became the representatives in the ranks of the Army, of particular cities, counties, or districts of the British Isles. In order to interest the population of these various areas in their representative corps, and to stimulate recruiting, a short history of the services of each regiment was prepared in pamphlet form, for distribution in its own recruiting area. These histories were compiled chiefly from information sup plied by the officers commanding the regimental depots but owing to the necessity of compressing the achievements of centuries into a few pages, the information given is practically limited to a brief outline of the more important campaigns, and all record of the many years spent in times of peace, in guarding the interests of the empire on its distant frontiers, is of necessity omitted. Book excerpt: Excerpt from War Medals and Decorations Issued to the British Military and Naval Forces and Allies 1588 to 1910 Of late years collecting War Medals has become a very popular hobby in this country, and seems likely to rival in popularity the formation of collections of coins. No doubt one reason for this is the very fine appearance presented by the medals when decked with their proper ribbons, and also the fact that almost every medal recalls some act of gallantry performed during the campaign for which it was issued. Hitherto the standard work on the subject has been Gibson's "British Military and Naval Medals," an excellent work, and one which contains much valuable information. It only, however, touches on medals down to 1877, since when many additions to our campaign medals have been made. Previous to this work, Carter's ''Medals of the British Army" was the chief book on the subject, but it only treated on medals down to the China War, in 1860, and is more of a military history than a collector's vade-mecum. Book excerpt: Excerpt from War Medals of the British Army, and How They Were Won When Napoleon proposed the institution of the Legion of Honour, he was met by the assertion that: "Crosses and ribbons were the pillars of an hereditary throne, and that they were unknown to the Romans, who conquered the world." In his reply to this objection - after showing that Rome rewarded the achievements of her citizens by all kinds of distinctions - he added : " For the soldier, as for all men in active life, you must have glory and distinction; recompenses are the food which nourish military virtue." For many years a similar antagonistic feeling to the granting of Medals to all ranks prevailed in this country, although the propriety of rewarding the victors of a hundred fights with some decoration was warmly advocated by the press, and the result eagerly expected by the veterans who had survived.
