Book excerpt: The field of organometallic chemistry has emerged over the last twenty-five years or so to become one of the most important areas of chemistry, and there are no signs of abatement in the intense current interest in the subject, particularly in terms of its proven and potential application in catalytic reactions involving hydrocarbons. The development of the organometallic/ catalysis area has resulted in no small way from many contributions from researchers investigating palladium systems. Even to the well-initiated, there seems a bewildering and diverse variety of organic reactions that are promoted by palladium(II) salts and complexes. Such homogeneous reactions include oxidative and nonoxidative coupling of substrates such as olefins, dienes, acetylenes, and aromatics; and various isomerization, disproportionation, hydrogenation, dehydrogenation, car bonylation and decarbonylation reactions, as well as reactions involving formation of bonds between carbon and halogen, nitrogen, sulfur, and silicon. The books by Peter M. Maitlis - The Organic Chemistry of Palladium, Volumes I, II, Academic Press, 1971 - serve to classify and identify the wide variety of reactions, and access to the vast literature is available through these volumes and more recent reviews, including those of J. Tsuji [Accounts Chem. Res. , 6, 8 (1973); Adv. in Organometal. , 17, 141 (1979)], R. F. Heck [Adv. in Catat. , 26, 323 (1977)], and ones by Henry [Accounts Chem. Book excerpt: The Organic Chemistry of Palladium, Volume I1: Catalytic Reactions deals with organic transformations resulting from palladium complexes either stoichiometrically or catalytically. One feature of a reaction catalyzed by transition metals is the absence of evidence for the typical reactive intermediates of organic chemistry, carbanions, and carbonium ions. This lack of evidence is due to the metal acting both as a source and a sink of electrons that result in energetically unfavorable ionic intermediaries. The book explains that palladium (II) can induce C-O bond formation. These reactions involve oxidation of the organic substrate and reduces the Pd(II) to metal, and are not catalytic. Industrial applications can re-oxidize the palladium metal back to Pd(II) in situ, making the reactions catalytic. The text also discusses certain reactions that can form C-O bonds as part of an oxidative process. The book also describes significant reactions that can be catalyzed by palladium metal, such as in the hydrogenation of multiple bonds, in the carbonylation of certain olefins and acetylenes, and in the catalytic cracking of high molecular weight hydrocarbons. Organic chemists, analytical chemists, investigators, and scientists whose works involve physical or inorganic chemistry will find the book truly useful.

Book excerpt: The importance of Pd-catalyzed C--H functionalization reactions for chemical transformations has been widely studied over the last several decades. Much of the research to date has focused on conventional Pd0/II catalytic cycles. However, more recent studies have shown that many transformations can also follow a PdII/IV catalytic cycle. High-valent PdIII and PdIV species are often proposed to be important intermediates in such transformations. C--H coupling reactions involving high-valent intermediates often involve the oxidation of a PdII species to a PdIII or PdIV complex, which can then undergo subsequent C--heteroatom bond formation. However, the need for harsh oxidants and reaction conditions in many of these reactions hinders their practical applicability. The focus of this work is to study the properties and reactivity of PdII, PdIII, and PdIV complexes through modifications of the supporting macrocyclic ligands. Another goal of this work is to probe the ability of these complexes to facilitate C--H activation and C--heteroatom bond formation reactions using environmentally benign oxidants. Our lab reported the synthesis and characterization of the first organometallic mononuclear PdIII complexes stabilized by the tetradentate ligand N,N'-di-tert-butyl-2,11-diaza[3,3](2,6)pyridinophane (tBuN4). In order to further probe the Pd chemistry with this class of ligands, we prepared ligands with modifications to the steric bulk on the amine groups. In the first study detailed in chapter 2, the synthesis and characterization of PdII and PdIII complexes supported by N,N'-di-neo-pentyl-2,11-diaza[3,3](2,6)-pyridinophane(NpN4) and N,N'-di-benzyl-2,11-diaza[3,3](2,6)-pyridinophane(BzN4) is reported. Interestingly, the spectroscopic and crystallographic property of the newly synthesized complexes falls between the tBuN4 and MeN4 complexes. The C--C and C--heteroatom bond formation reactivity of the NpN4 and BzN4 supported complexes is also similar to our group's previously reported complexes. We also prepared and studied a series of Pd complexes bearing a modified tetradentate pyridinophane ligand, tBuN3CH. Essentially, we have replaced one of the nitrogen donor atoms from the N4 ligand with a carbon atom and have also introduced a new C--H bond. Due to its expected positioning near the metal center, this bond has the potential to undergo intramolecular C--H bond activation. In order to study the reactivity of this ligand, electronic modifications were made by substituting various electron-donating and withdrawing groups in the para position to this new C--H bond. In chapter 3, the synthesis and characterization of a series of PdII, PdIII, and PdIV complexes stabilized by the N3CH ligand is reported. Interestingly, a spectroscopic and crystallographic study of the pRN3CHPdII(OAc)2 complexes reveals that the Cipso--H bond remains unactivated at the PdII stage. However, upon oxidation to PdIII, the Cipso--H bond is activated.Interestingly, we discovered that the aerobic oxidation of the PdII complex [pRN3CHPdII(MeCN)](BF4) leads to the formation of the PdIII complex [pRN3CHPdIII(MeCN)](ClO4)2 at room temperature. Surprisingly, the C--H activation reaction proceeds in the presence of oxygen without the need for external base. Furthermore, the moderate rate of the reaction allowed us to investigate the mechanism of the reaction by utilizing kinetics and UV-Vis spectroscopy. Detailed mechanistic studies revealed that C--H activation of the Cipso--H bond is the rate determining step of the reaction.

Book excerpt: Homogeneous palladium-catalyzed oxidation reactions are a powerful way to introduce functionality into organic molecules and streamline the synthesis of pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and commodity chemicals. In recent decades, the use of ancillary ligands has greatly improved the scope and applicability of Pd-catalyzed oxidation reactions, where they modulate catalyst activity, selectivity, and stability. Despite extensive studies cataloguing the mechanistic roles that ligands play, little attention has been given to how ancillary ligands modulate thermodynamic aspects of Pd-catalyzed oxidation reactions. Herein are reported studies of Pd-mediated oxidation reactions, with particular emphasis on how ancillary ligands modulate the thermodynamic properties of Pd catalysts and how those properties are made manifest in Pd-mediated oxidations.

Book excerpt: Precatalyst species present in a solution of Pd2(dba)3 and Xantphos were identified as Pd(Xantphos)(dba) and Pd(Xantphos)2 by use of 31p NMR and independent syntheses. Pd(Xantphos)2 was found to form at high ligand concentrations. To determine whether the formation of this species affected reaction rates, reaction calorimetry was used to explore the rate of the palladium-catalyzed coupling of 4-t-butylbromobenzene and morpholine using the ligand Xantphos at varying palladium to ligand ratios. It was found that catalyst activity is dramatically dependent on the concentration of ligand relative to palladium, due to formation of Pd(Xantphos)2. Two plausible hypotheses for the low activity of Pd(Xantphos)2 as a precatalyst are (1) a slow rate of dissociation of a ligand from the bis-ligated species, and (2) the high degree of insolubility of Pd(Xantphos)2. Magnetization transfer experiments were used to probe the rate of dissociation of ligand for the bis-ligated species, and reaction calorimetry experiments were performed using the more soluble t-butylXantphos in comparison to Xantphos to determine whether the insolubility of' Pd(Xantphos)2 causes it to have relatively low activity. It was found that solubility is not the main cause for the low activity of Pd(Xantphos)2, and evidence was given to support the hypothesis that low activity results from the slow dissociation of a ligand from the bis-ligated species.
