Download or read book Ecology of Root Pathogens written by S.V. Krupa and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ecology of Root Pathogens discusses the significance of fungi infecting the roots, and emphasizes the significant diseases of roots and their symptoms. This book also names the genera and species of fungi that cause diseases of roots, and classifies and characterizes the root and pathogen interaction in soil. The book describes the behavior of plant pathogenic bacteria, such as Agrobacterium, Corynebacterium, Xanthomonas, Pseudomonas, Erwinia, and Streptomyces. It also explores how plants and plant-produced stimuli affect the associated population of plant parasitic nematodes and how these plant parasitic nematodes affect higher plants in certain ways. In addition, this book discusses the morphology, classification, nomenclature, multiplication and translocation of viruses infecting the plants. It also describes the symptoms of the virus infection in roots. The book includes a discussion on the fundamentals of biological control, which include the pathosystem concept, the behavior of the soil microflora in the soil, the reservoirs for infection, the processes of pathogen decline, and the integrated effects on the decline of the pathogen. This discussion on biological control also presents the natural and artificially induced biological control. This book will be of great value to soil microbiologists and plant pathologists.

Book Synopsis Faba Bean Improvement by : G. Hawtin
Download or read book Faba Bean Improvement written by G. Hawtin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Faba beans, formerly known as broad beans, are among the oldest crops in the world. It has in fact been claimed with some justification that the Pyramids were built on faba beans! They are today a major crop in many countries such as China, Egypt and the Sudan; and are widely grown for human food throughout the Me~iterranean region, in Ethiopia and in parts of Latin America. In recent years there has been a growing interest in faba bean production as a protein source for stock feed in parts of Europe, North America and Aus· tralia. The publication served by this preface arose from the first International Faba Bean Con ference, held in Cairo, Egypt, on March 7-11, 1981 which provided a suitable forum for the review of many scientifically important aspects of the improvement of the crop. Leading faba bean specialists from four continents who participated were able not only to contri· bute from their personal expertise in relevant subjects, but in return to gain from their ex perience of Nile Valley conditions and from close contact with so many of the world's faba bean scientists. The conference was supported in the main by the ICARDAjIFAD Nile Valley Faba Bean Project. Additional support was received from a number of other organisations and institutions whose help is gladly acknowledged. These included the Agricultural Research Council (ARC) of the Egyptian Ministry of Agriculture; G.T.Z. of Germany; IDRC of Canada; the National Research Center of Egypt; and Cairo University.

Book Synopsis Physiological Plant Pathology by : R. Heitefuß
Download or read book Physiological Plant Pathology written by R. Heitefuß and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 909 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plant pathology embraces all aspects of biological and scientific activity which are concerned with understanding the complex phenomena of diseases in plants. Physiological plant pathology represents those specialities within plant pathology which focus on the physiological and biochemical activities of pathogens and on the response of host plant tissues. Today there is an increasing recognition on the part of the scientific agri cultural community that only through a deeper and more fundamental under standing of all the interacting components of the agricultural biota can we expect to improve our capabilities of feeding an expanding world population. It is in this context that physiological plant pathology has assumed new significance within the broader field of plant pathology. No longer are studies on the biochemistry and physiology of pathogens and pathogenesis merely isolated academic exercises; rather, a substantial coherent body of knowledge is accumulating upon which our understanding of the process of disease developmen t and host resistance is being founded. It is from these foundations of knowledge that ultimately new insights into the control of plant diseases may be expected to grow. It seems appropriate, therefore, that at regular intervals those involved in the various subspecialities encompassing the broadest aspects of physiological plant pathology reassess the contributions within the particular specialities in the light of new knowledge and technologies for the purpose of articulating new and productive directions for the future.
Book Synopsis Plant Disease: An Advanced Treatise by : James G. Horsfall
Download or read book Plant Disease: An Advanced Treatise written by James G. Horsfall and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 489 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plant Disease An Advanced Treatise, Volume IV: How Pathogens Induce Disease describes the mechanisms of induction of various types of plant dysfunction by parasites and pathogens. Comprised of 22 chapters, this volume focuses on the effects of major group of pathogens on plant, including fungi, bacteria, nematodes, mycoplasmas, ricketssia, insects, and parasitic seed plants. This volume begins with a series of theoretical and analytical discussions on the evolution and energetics of pathogens, predisposition phenomena, multiple pathogen interactions, and the penetration and colonization of hosts by pathogens. Considerable chapters describe the unique features and special adaptations of each major group of pathogens. This text includes discussions on the special relationships the mycoplasmas and rickettsia have developed with insects and viruses; their effects on growth and differentiation of the plant hosts; and the origin and evolutionary development of these pathogens. This volume also describes what is known about plant disease induction in other plants with toxic chemicals and the role of toxic residues in plant refuse and in the "sickness phenomenon. A chapter examines a series of iatrogenic diseases and the mechanisms by which they are induced. The concluding chapters deal with the effect of diseased plants and plant pathogens in livestock and human beings. This volume is an invaluable source for plant pathologists, mycologists, advanced researches, and graduate students.

Book Synopsis Advances in Microbial Ecology by : K. Marshall
Download or read book Advances in Microbial Ecology written by K. Marshall and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in Microbial Ecology was established by the International Com mittee on Microbial Ecology (ICOME) to provide a means for in-depth, critical, and even provocative reviews to emphasize current trends in the rapidly expanding area of microbial ecology. Advances in Microbial Ecol ogy is now recognized as a major source of information and inspiration both for practicing and for prospective microbial ecologists. The majority of reviews published in Advances have been prepared by leaders in par ticular areas following invitations provided by the Editorial Board. Although the Board intends to continue its policy of soliciting reviews, individual microbial ecologists are encouraged to submit outlines of unsolicited contributions to any member of the Editorial Board for con sideration for inclu~ion in Advances. Volume 9 of Advances in Microbial Ecology covers a particularly broad range of topics related to microbial ecology. The potential for applying ribosomal RNA sequence analysis for the definition of natural microbial populations is considered by N. R. Pace, D. A. Stahl, D. J. Lane, and G. J. Olsen. Other reviews on techniques include the applica tion of microelectrode technology to microbial ecosystems by N. P. Revsbech and B. B. J0rgensen and the use of rates of nucleic acid synthe sis to determine bacterial growth rates in natural aquatic habitats by D. J. W. Moriarty. The contribution by T. Fenchel discusses the ecology of heterotrophic microflagellates. J. H. Andrews and R. F. Harris present the concept of r- and K-selection and its relevance to microbial ecology.
