Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mechanics of Continuous Media and Analysis of Structures is a six-chapter book that begins by elucidating the mechanics of solid continuous media. The text then describes the finite elements method, which undoubtedly dominates the methods used for structural analysis. Subsequent chapters explain the variational principles in linear elasticity, vibration of linear structure, non-linear deformations, and the shell theory. This book will be valuable to all those who need certain theoretical developments in mechanics, including mechanical engineers, economists, and mathematicians.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A powerful, unified approach to mathematical and computational modeling in science and engineering Mathematical and computational modeling makes it possible to predict the behavior of a broad range of systems across a broad range of disciplines. This text guides students and professionals through the axiomatic approach, a powerful method that will enable them to easily master the principle types of mathematical and computational models used in engineering and science. Readers will discover that this axiomatic approach not only enables them to systematically construct effective models, it also enables them to apply these models to any macroscopic physical system. Mathematical Modeling in Science and Engineering focuses on models in which the processes to be modeled are expressed as systems of partial differential equations. It begins with an introductory discussion of the axiomatic formulation of basic models, setting the foundation for further topics such as: Mechanics of classical and non-classical continuous systems Solute transport by a free fluid Flow of a fluid in a porous medium Multiphase systems Enhanced oil recovery Fluid mechanics Throughout the text, diagrams are provided to help readers visualize and better understand complex mathematical concepts. A set of exercises at the end of each chapter enables readers to put their new modeling skills into practice. There is also a bibliography in each chapter to facilitate further investigation of individual topics. Mathematical Modeling in Science and Engineering is ideal for both students and professionals across the many disciplines of science and engineering that depend on mathematical and computational modeling to predict and understand complex systems.

Book excerpt: This pioneering book presents the basic theory, experimental methods, experimental results and solution of boundary value problems in a readable, useful way to designers as well as research workers and students. The mathematical background required has been kept to a minimum and supplemented by explanations where it has been necessary to introduce specialized mathematics. Also, appendices have been included to provide sufficient background in Laplace transforms and in step functions. Chapters 1 and 2 contain an introduction and historic review of creep. As an aid to the reader a background on stress, strain, and stress analysis is provided in Chapters 3 and 4, an introduction to linear viscoelasticity is found in Chapter 5 and linear viscoelastic stress analysis in Chapter 6. In the next six chapters the multiple integral representation of nonlinear creep and relaxation, and simplifications to single integral forms and incompressibility, are examined at length. After a consideration of other representations, general relations are derived, then expanded to components of stress or strain for special cases. Both constant stress (or strain) and variable states are described, together with methods of determining material constants. Conversion from creep to relaxation, effects of temperature and stress analysis problems in nonlinear materials are also treated here. Finally, Chapter 13 discusses experimental methods for creep and stress relaxation under combined stress. This chapter considers especially those experimental problems which must be solved properly when reliable experimental results of high precision are required. Six appendices present the necessary mathematical background, conversion tables, and more rigorous derivations than employed in the text. An extensive updated bibliography completes the book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Control of heat and mass transfer processes by means of external force effects is one of the most important problems in modern applied physics. This book is devoted to the study of the magnetic field effect as it bears on transfer phenomena: heat and mass transfer. In conducting media, this influence is mainly due to the induced electric current and the interaction of the current with the magnetic field, whereas in magnetizable fluids, molecular or colloidal solution, transfer phenomena are directly affected by the field. When analysing heat and mass transfer in multiphase magnetizing media, only those phenomena which could be described in terms of conventional quasi-stationary approximation are considered. The effects assoicated with the non-equilibrium magnetization of the system and particle interaction receive special attention here. The problem studied here have been considered with a view to possible applications, particularly in biology and medicine.

Book excerpt: This highly detailed reference represents an elaborate development of the theory of processing oil and natural gas and its application in the field -- indispensable for graduate engineering students and professionals alike. The renowned expert author, a professor at Moscow State University, has ample experience in both lecturing and publishing, albeit in the Russian language. This book is thus the first to provide a translation compiling his extensive knowledge, much of which remained unpublished due to security restrictions in the former Soviet Union. Based upon and compiled from Professor Sinaiski's university lectures, the first chapters treat the technical facilities for preparing and processing natural hydrocarbon substances. The following systematic approach go on to explain the behaviors of fluids, gases and droplets separately for solutions, suspensions and emulsions, as well as for gas-liquid mixtures. The resulting work is of interest both for senior students as well as for engineers working in this field.
