Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our rationale for the second edition remains the same as for the first edition, which appeared over twenty years ago. This is to offer simplified, useful and easily understood methods for dealing with the creep of components operating under conditions met in practice. When the first edition was written, we could not claim that the methods which were introduced were well-tried. They were somewhat conjectural, although firmly based, but not sufficiently well devel oped. Since that time, the Reference Stress Methods (RSM) introduced in the book have received much scrutiny and development. The best recognition we could have of the original methods is the fact that they are now firmly embedded in codes of practice. Hopefully, we have now gone a long way towards achieving our original objectives. There are major additions to this second edition which should help to justify our claims. These include further clarification regarding Reference Stress Methods in Chapter 4. There are also new topics which depend on RSM in varying degrees: • Creep fracture is covered in Chapter 7, where methods for assessing creep crack initiation and crack growth are fully described. This chapter starts with a review of the basic concepts of fracture mechanics and follows with useful, approximate methods, compatible with the needs of design for creep and the availability of standard data. • Creep/fatigue interactions and environmental effects appear in Chapter 8.

Book excerpt: At its meeting on April 23, 1965 in Paris the Bureau of IUTAM decided to have a Symposium on the Irreversible Aspects of Continaum Mechanics held in June 1966 in Vienna. In addition, a Symposium on the Transfer of Physical Characteristics in Moving Fluids which, orig inally, had been scheduled to take place in Stockholm was rescheduled to be held in Vienna immediately following the Symposium on the Irre versible Aspects of Continuum Mechanics. It was felt that the subjects of the two symposia were so closely related that participants should be given an opportunity to attend both. Both decisions were unanimously approved by the members of the General Assembly of IUTAM. Prof. H. PARKUS, Vienna, was appointed Chairman of the Symposium on the Irreversible Aspects, and Prof. L. I. SEDOV, Moscow, was appointed Chairman of the Symposium on the Transfer of Physical Characteristics, with Prof. P ARKUS being re sponsible for the local organization of both symposia. In accordance with the policy set forth by IUTAM, membership of the Symposia was limited and by invitation only. Financial support for covering the costs of organization and for a partial defrayal of the accomodation and traveling expenses of the participants was provided by IUTAM and by the Austrian Ministry of Education.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The calculation of stresses and deformations in a load-bearing wall is usually performed under the assumption that all loads are applied after the structure has been completed. In reality this is not the case. The dominating loads in a block of flats e.g. are caused by the self-weight of the building which increases during construction. Statically determinate structures are built up in such a way that a given external force can correspond to only one distribution of internal forces irrespective of the force-deflection properties of the system. On the other hand, in statically indeterminate structures equilibrium exists for several combinations of interior forces under the same exterior load. Generally, multi-storey buildings with interconnected load-bearing walls are statically indeterminate structures and therefore the load distribution is statically possible in many ways. The state of equilibrium appearing in a given situation will depend upon flexibilities of the structure. These in turn are influenced by the method and order of erection during construction. Thus the effect of the self-weight of load-carrying units can not be described by analysing the behaviour of the completed structure. In the following the interest is concentrated upon structural systems with load-bearing cross-walls connected to self-supporting exterior walls. The basic conditions for the stresses and deformations in the walls are formulated in such a way that the successive loads during construction may be considered. Only effects of the weight and shrinkage of the structural elements are taken into account. The analysis is performed according to an approximate method. The application of the technique is demonstrated with examples, and the results are compared with those obtained by using other methods.

Book excerpt: * Numerous line drawings with consistent format and units allow easy comparison of the behavior of a very wide range of materials * Transmission electron micrographs provide a direct insight in the basic microstructure of metals deforming at high temperatures * Extensive literature review of over 1000 references provide an excellent reference document, and a very balanced discussionUnderstanding the strength of materials at a range of temperatures is critically important to a huge number of researchers and practitioners from a wide range of fields and industry sectors including metallurgists, industrial designers, aerospace R&D personnel, and structural engineers. The most up-to date and comprehensive book in the field, Fundamentals of Creep in Metals and Alloys discusses the fundamentals of time-dependent plasticity or creep plasticity in metals, alloys and metallic compounds. This is the first book of its kind that provides broad coverage of a range of materials not just a sub-group such as metallic compounds, superalloys or crystals. As such it presents the most balanced view of creep for all materials scientists. The theory of all of these phenomena are extensively reviewed and analysed in view of an extensive bibliography that includes the most recent publications in the field. All sections of the book have undergone extensive peer review and therefore the reader can be sure they have access to the most up-to-date research, fully interrogated, from the world's leading investigators.· Numerous line drawings with consistent format and units allow easy comparison of the behavior of a very wide range of materials· Transmission electron micrographs provide a direct insight in the basic microstructure of metals deforming at high temperatures· Extensive literature review of over 1000 references provide an excellent reference document, and a very balanced discussion

Book excerpt: This paper is intended to promote insight into the statics and kinematics of rigid bodies such as these matters are encountered in Structural Mechanics. The emphasis is equally much on discussing and understanding the basic principles as on the formal statement of ready theorems. In the qualitative analysis simple Euclidean geometry is used to a large extent which should make the argumentation tangible. Results in two dimensions are in a logic way generalized to three dimensions to form hypotheses whose validity is later examined. The conclusions arrived at are elementary. Some observations are especially useful for understanding the behaviour of completely and incompletely supported rigid bodies in plane and space. The exposition is meant to be self-contained.
