Book excerpt: The five-point bending test is shown to be an effective and efficient way of determining the mechanical properties of structural composite lumber. Shear strength, bending strength, shear-free Young's modulus of elasticity and shear modulus for both plank (flatwise) and joist (edgewise) orientations can be obtained with simple adjustments of the test configuration. Span or span-to-depth ratios are adjusted to produce either predominantly shear or bending failure. To determine elastic constants, a removable center support creates the necessary situation for both four-point bending and five-point bending. Use of a deflection yoke is especially important in determining the shear moduli. Results are reported for testing laminated veneer lumber. which was selected as representative of the evolving family of structural composite lumber products.

Book excerpt: The development of plantation and community forest to meet wood demand in society has produced fast growing wood species. The research objectives were 1) to determine demarcation point/transition age between juvenile and mature wood on sengon (Falcataria moluccana), jabon (Anthocephalus cadamba Miq.), poplar (Populus sp) and douglas fir (Psedotsuga menzii); 2) to analyze the effect of juvenility on lathe check, surface roughness and wettability; 3) to analyze the effect of lathe check and juvenility on glue bond strength and laminated veneer lumber (LVL) bending properties; and 4) to apply a new analytical model to determine the variation of specific MOE LVL values of sengon and jabon from pith to bark. Based on fiber length trait, the demarcation point between juvenile and mature wood were approximately at segmented rings 17th (sengon) and at segmented ring 24th (jabon). While, transition age of poplar cultivars and douglas-fir, transition age happened approximately at 12 years old and 18 years old, respectively. The results showed that wood near pith on sengon and jabon resulted veneers with higher lathe check, rougher surface and high wettability, while wood near bark resulted veneers with lower lathe check, smoother surface and low wettability. Glue bond strength, Specific MOE (SMOE) and Specific MOR (Modulus of Rupture) of sengon and jabon LVL were decreased as the frequency of lathe check increased or those strength values increased from pith to bark. The advantage of using poplar veneers from mature wood was proved with an improvement of 15 to 20% on average for mechanical properties, while for douglas-fir, was 7 to 22%. An analytical model was used to predict the variation of the LVL mechanical characteristics using different scenarios. According to the context of this study assumed to be close to the Indonesian resource there is no need to sort veneers since most of the tree is juvenile wood for logs no older than 7.

Book excerpt: Wood-based materials are CO2-neutral, renewable, and considered to be environmentally friendly. The huge variety of wood species and wood-based composites allows a wide scope of creative and esthetic alternatives to materials with higher environmental impacts during production, use and disposal. Quality of wood is influenced by the genetic and environmental factors. One of the emerging uses of wood are building and construction applications. Modern building and construction practices would not be possible without use of wood or wood-based composites. The use of composites enables using wood of lower quality for the production of materials with engineered properties for specific target applications. Even more, the utilization of such reinforcing particles as carbon nanotubes and nanocellulose enables development of a new generation of composites with even better properties. The positive aspect of decomposability of waste wood can turn into the opposite when wood or wood-based materials are exposed to weathering, moisture oscillations, different discolorations, and degrading organisms. Protective measures are therefore unavoidable for many outdoor applications. Resistance of wood against different aging factors is always a combined effect of toxic or inhibiting ingredients on the one hand, and of structural, anatomical, or chemical ways of excluding moisture on the other.

This book was released on 1989 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The laminated veneer lumber (LVL) industry is relatively new with a history of less than 20 years in large scale production. While LVL is stronger due to the many overlapping layers and can obtain higher yields than sawn lumber, it is also more expensive to produce. Veneers come in 8 ft or 4 ft lengths, and therefore end joints are necessary to produce longer structural members. Both scarf joints and butt joints are used to produce these longer members but the relative strength of each is not well known. This project was initiated to study the effect of scarf joints on the flatwise MOR of LVL. Aspen veneers used were obtained from a plywood mill in northern Ontario and were tested for bending strength in 13-ply, 7-ply, and 5-ply sizes with and without scarf joints.

This book was released on 1990 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Laminated-veneer lumber (LVL) was subjected to a vacuum-pressure-soak test and then oven dried (VPS-OD) to assess durability for outside exposure. Mechanical properties were generally unaffected by this treatment. After a period (250 days) of exterior exposure in Melbourne, LVL planks, some loaded to a moderate stress, others unloaded, were found to deflect significantly in comparison to solid wood and minor changes in mechanical properties were measured. The VPS-OD treatment did not predict this behaviour. Shear properties of LVL have been documented as being of a lower order in comparison to solid wood and this was confirmed. Some of the relatively large deflections measured may be due to this factor. (author abstract).
