Book excerpt: This volume contains the edited version of lectures and selected research contributions presented at the NATO ADVANCED STUDY INSTITUTE on MECHANICAL BEHA VI OUR OF MATERIALS AT HIGH TEMPERATURE, held in Sesimbra, Portugal, 12th-22nd September 1995, and organized by 1ST-Lisbon Institute of Technology, PortugaL The Institute was attended by 88 participants, including 15 lecturers from 17 countries including five CP countries. The lecturers were leading scientists and technologists from universities, research institutions and industry. The students were mainly young PhD students and junior academic or research staff with postgraduate qualifications (MSc or PhD). Fourteen students were from the five CP countries. The students presented research papers or posters during the Institute reporting the current progress of their research projects. A total of thirty three lectures, ten research papers and fifty posters were presented. This book does not contain the poster presentations and seven research papers were selected for publication. All the sessions were very active and quite extensive discussions on scientific aspects took place during the Institute. The Advanced Study Institute provided a forum for interaction among scientists and engineers from different areas of research, and young researchers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This outstanding text offers a comprehensive treatment of the principles of the mechanical behavior of materials. Appropriate for senior and graduate courses, it is distinguished by its focus on the relationship between macroscopic properties, material microstructure, and fundamental concepts of bonding and crystal structure. The current, second edition retains the original editions extensive coverage of nonmetallics while increasing coverage of ceramics, composites, and polymers that have emerged as structural materials in their own right and are now competitive with metals in many applications. It contains new case studies, includes solved example problems, and incorporates real-life examples. Because of the books extraordinary breadth and depth, adequate coverage of all of the material requires two full semesters of a typical three-credit course. Since most curricula do not have the luxury of allocating this amount of time to mechanical behavior of materials, the text has been designed so that material can be culled or deleted with ease. Instructors can select topics they wish to emphasize and are able to proceed at any level they consider appropriate.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High Temperature Structures and Materials is a compilation of the proceedings of the Third Symposium on Naval Structural Mechanics held at Columbia University in New York on January 23-25, 1963. The symposium provided a forum for discussing structural mechanics under conditions of elevated temperatures. Emphasis is placed on the various aspects of structural design for elevated temperature service. The following areas are covered: material aspects of elevated temperature design; effects of high-speed environment; thermal stress analysis; and design criteria and reliability. This book is comprised of 13 chapters and begins by assessing the temperature dependence of elastic and anelastic properties in solids, followed by a discussion on the thermo-mechanical behavior of ceramics. Subsequent chapters explore the physical aspects of creep; thermal fatigue and its relation to creep rupture and mechanical fatigue; materials aspects of the re-entry problem; and problems of heat conduction and melting. Thermal stresses in viscoelastic solids are also considered, along with creep design and aspects of reliability under conditions of elevated temperature creep and fatigue. This monograph will be a valuable resource for material physicists and mechanical and structural designers concerned with the problem of elevated temperature effects on the performance and safety of modern structures.

Book excerpt: High Temperature Mechanical Behavior of Ceramic-Matrix Composites Covers the latest research on the high-temperature mechanical behavior of ceramic-matrix composites Due to their high temperature resistance, strength and rigidity, relatively light weight, and corrosion resistance, ceramic-matrix composites (CMCs) are widely used across the aerospace and energy industries. As these advanced composites of ceramics and various fibers become increasingly important in the development of new materials, understanding the high-temperature mechanical behavior and failure mechanisms of CMCs is essential to ensure the reliability and safety of practical applications. High Temperature Mechanical Behavior of Ceramic-Matrix Composites examines the behavior of CMCs at elevated temperature—outlining the latest developments in the field and presenting the results of recent research on different CMC characteristics, material properties, damage states, and temperatures. This up-to-date resource investigates the high-temperature behavior of CMCs in relation to first matrix cracking, matrix multiple cracking, tensile damage and fracture, fatigue hysteresis loops, stress-rupture, vibration damping, and more. This authoritative volume: Details the relationships between various high-temperature conditions and experiment results Features an introduction to the tensile, vibration, fatigue, and stress-rupture behavior of CMCs at elevated temperatures Investigates temperature- and time-dependent cracking stress, deformation, damage, and fracture of fiber-reinforced CMCs Includes full references and internet links to source material Written by a leading international researcher in the field, High Temperature Mechanical Behavior of Ceramic-Matrix Composites is an invaluable resource for materials scientists, surface chemists, organic chemists, aerospace engineers, and other professionals working with CMCs.

Book excerpt: Technical ceramics because of their chemical inertness, high melting point, good wear resistance, excellent mechanical stability at high temperature and other unique properties, represent a class of materials eminently suited for many critical engineering applications. Unfortunately, because of their brittleness and unfavorable combination of pertinent material properties, technical ceramics generally are highly susceptible to catastrophic failure in non-uniform thermal environments, which give rise to thermal stresses of high magnitude. Thermal stress failure analysis of structural materials represents a multi-disciplinary problem which involves the principles of heat transfer, mechanics and materials engineering. Over the last few decades much general understanding of the nature of thermal stress failure of brittle materials has been generated. However, due to the multi-disciplinary nature of the problem, the ability to predict thermal stress failure quantitatively for design or other purposes has lagged behind the progress made in other engineering fields. The objective of the present program is to improve the qualitative and quantitative understanding of the nature of thermal stress failure of brittle structural materials.
