Book excerpt: The mechanical and transport properties of carbon nanotube systems are studied by large-scale ab initio, tight-binding and classical molecular dynamics simulations. The ultimate strength of carbon nanotubes is investigated theoretically. While the formation energy of strain-induced topological defects determines the thermodynamic limits of the elastic response and of mechanical resistance to applied tension, it is found that the activation barriers for the formation of such defects are much larger than estimated previously. The theoretical results indicate a substantially greater resilience and strength, and show that the ultimate strength limit of carbon nanotubes has yet to be reached experimentally. Carbon nanotubes are indeed the strongest material known. The electronic transport in a new type of carbon nanotube material: carbon nanotube-metal cluster assembly is investigated for gas absorption. For an Al cluster attached to a metallic nanotube, we have observed that its electrical response dramatically changes upon NH3 adsorption onto the metal cluster. For a semiconducting nanotube-Al cluster assembly, the same gas adsorption enhances the system's conductivity. The results of our ab initio simulations explain the observed behavior in terms of interactions between the molecular species and the nanotube-cluster system, where successive charge transfers between the components tailor the electronic and transport properties. Carbon nanotubemetal cluster assemblies could be a new type of nanotube-based chemical/biological sensors.

One of the crucial components of the thermal management system is high-performance thermal interface materials (TIMs), the materials connecting various solid-solid interfaces in packaged electronic devices. Ideal TIMs have the characteristics of high mechanical compliance and high intrinsic thermal conductivity. Vertically Aligned Carbon Nanotube (CNT) arrays are promising for advanced TIMs since they possesses both characters yet poor contact to the target surface can limit the overall performance. Recently, indium-assisted bonding has been found to enhance the contact conductance by a factor of 10, which inspires a comprehensive study of the CNT-array thermal transport properties. This thesis presents a systematic study on the thermal transport and mechanical properties of CNT arrays. The CNT array density and length are controlled via the thermal annealing duration and ethylene exposure duration in water-assisted chemical vapor deposition synthesis. The thermal transport properties are measured accurately by phase-sensitive photo thermal reflectance thermometry. The thermal contact conductance between CNT array and Glass increased close to linearly by increasing the volume fraction of the CNT array. The increase of volume fraction can potentially increase the number of contacting tubes which further enhance the contact area. In addition, the effective thermal conductivity increases monotonically with the increase of volume fraction of the CNT array. Quantitatively, it has been found that the increasing trend of thermal conductivity is larger than the increasing trend of volume fraction. The strain and buckling behavior of CNT arrays under compressive stress were systematically studied. It has been verified both experimentally and analytically that buckling in lower density CNT array results in a further decrease of thermal conductivity. The thermal conductivity of CNT array decreases as the structure changes from vertically aligned to buckled, while the thermal conductivity rises back as the buckling structure becomes more compact. The rise of thermal conductivity with the buckling structure is attributed to the rise of the thermal contact conductance between tubes. The thermal contact conductance between CNT array and glass increases as the compressive stress increases to certain degree, while further increase of stress causes fatigue at the contacts, which decreases the contact conductance. These results demonstrate how thermal transport properties vary as a function of CNT array density and as a function of the strain of CNT array. With such trends, the thermal properties can be further increased by understanding the underlying mechanisms for such trends.

This dissertation focuses on electrical transport properties of a one-dimensional system, typified by ultrahigh quality carbon nanotubes (CNT), and two-dimensional system of atomically thin black phosphorus (BP) sheets. In the first part of this dissertation, we explore the transport properties of hexagonal boron nitride (hBN)-encapsulated CNT with zero-dimensional (0D) contacts. A CNT is an 1D allotrope of carbon, providing a prototypical 1D system for fundamental research of low-dimensional phenomena, as well as a strong candidate for commercialization as next-generation electronic circuit elements and interconnects. Unfortunately, current CNT device performance is limited to 25 μA (~1 mW breakdown power) per shell by substrate effects, which hinder its adoption into the aforementioned high-power/high-current applications. By substrate (hexagonal boron nitride (hBN)) and (0D) contact engineering, we observed a significantly enhanced current carrying capacity in hBN-encapsulated 0D-contacted CNT devices. These devices can carry up to 6-7 times the maximum current and up to an order of magnitude increase in breakdown power compared to SiO2-supported CNT devices. The heat dissipation mechanism appears to be a complicated affair of substrate, contact, and channel effects. The exact mechanism remains to be pinpointed, though for double-walled CNT cooling via the metal contacts seems to be the dominant process.

Therefore, I believe that a comprehensive source on the science / technology of conducting polymers which maintains a link between grass root fundamentals and state-of-the-art R&D is still missing from the open literature.
