Book excerpt: The quest for multifunctional carbon fiber reinforced composites (CFRPs) expedited the use of several nano reinforcements such as zinc oxide nanorods (ZnO) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs). Zinc oxide I semi-conductor with good piezoelectric and pyroelectric properties. These properties could be transmitted to CFRPs when a nanophase of ZnO is embedded within CFRPs. In lieu of ZnO nanorods, Bucky paper comprising mat of multiwall-carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) could be sandwiched in-between laminae to construct a functionally graded composite with elevated electrical and thermal conductivities. In this study, a low temperature (90°) hydrothermal synthesis method was utilized to grow ZnO nanorods on the surface of carbon fiber fabrics. Different configurations of hybrid composites based on carbon fibers, in combination with ZnO nanorods and Bucky paper were fabricated. The composites were tested mechanically via tensile and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) tests to examine the effect of the different nanoadditives on the stiffness, strength, and damping performance of the hybrid composites. Surface electrical resistivities of the hybrid composites were probed to examine the contributions of the different nanoadditives. The results suggest that there are certain hybrid composite combinations that could lead to the development of highly multifunctional composites with better strength, stiffness, damping and electrical conductivity.

Book excerpt: Over three billion metric tons of cement are produced annually worldwide, making concrete the most extensively used construction material. Self-sensing, or smart, cement allows real-time monitoring of performance through the entire service life of a concrete structure, for the detection of changing stresses, contamination, excessive temperature, gas leaks and pre-seismic activity. This is achieved by adding a very small proportion of conductive or semi-conductive fibers, such as carbon fibers to the bulk cement, making it piezoresistive, and enabling changes in the concrete’s electrical resistivity in response to shear stress and strain to be monitored. This state-of-the-art reference work presents experimental results with a realistic theoretical framework, for cement manufactures, concrete technologists and contractors as well as researchers.

Book excerpt: The unique mechanical and electrical properties of carbon nanotubes and graphitic structures have drawn extensive attention from researchers over the past two decades. The electro-mechanical behavior of these structures and their composites, in which electrical resistance changes when mechanical deformation is applied facilitates their use in sensing applications. In this work, carbon nanotube sheet- epoxy nanocomposites with the matrix modified with various contents of coarse and fine graphene nanoplatelets are fabricated. The addition of a secondary filler results in improvements of both electrical and mechanical properties. In addition, with the inclusion of the second filler, change in resistivity with mechanical deformation (manifested by gauge factor) is significantly enhanced. Nanocomposite with 5 wt. % coarse graphene platelets achieved is the most effective resistivity-strain behavior and largest gauge factor. Similar trend in variation of gauge factor variation was observed for fine graphene nanoplatelet - nanotube sheet nanocomposites. An analytical model for explaining these observations, incorporating strain and the effect of second filler, is developed. Sensors fabricated using these hybrid nanocomposites can be potentially used in damage sensing of aerospace carbon-fiber composites.

Book excerpt: Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and carbon nanofibers (CNFs) have an exceptional combination of properties that make them ideal materials for use as reinforcing particles in advanced composites. This investigation was aimed at obtaining fundamental understanding of the processing and properties of carbon nanoparticle/fiber-reinforced polymer composites -defined as multiscalereinforced polymer composites (MRPCs)- manufactured through a practical and scalable process. Such process consists of two stages. The first stage involves the synthesis of multiscalereinforcement fabrics (MRFs) by electrophoretic deposition of carboxylic acid- or aminefunctionalized CNTs and CNFs onto the surface of carbon fiber layers in aqueous medium; while the second stage proceeds with the stacking of the MRFs and infusion of the resulting preforms with an epoxy-amine resin system to obtain the MRPC. MRPCs manufactured following the described approach were tested for mechanical and electrical properties. Mechanical test results showed an increase in interlaminar shear strength (ILSS), shear stiffness, and compressive strength of all panels manufactured. Panels containing amine-functionalized carbon nanoparticles had the highest increase in properties: 13% in ILSS, 2.5-4 fold in shear stiffness, and up to 15% in compressive strength. On the other hand, it was found that through-plane electrical conductivity of MRPCs increased by 100% when using unsized MRFs. Investigation into the enhancement mechanism of mechanical and electrical properties was also performed. Discussion of these mechanisms are presented with emphasis placed on the fiber/matrix interface and the load transfer mechanisms between matrix, carbon nanoparticles, and carbon fiber.

Book excerpt: The use of composite materials in aerospace, electronics, and wind industries has become increasingly common, and these composite components are required to carry mechanical, electrical, and thermal loads simultaneously. A unique property of carbon fiber composites is that when an electric current is applied to the specimen, the mechanical strength of the specimen increases. Previous studies have shown that the higher the electric current, the greater the increase in impact strength. However, as current passes through the composite, heat is generated through Joule heating. This Joule heating can cause degradation of the composite and thus a loss in strength. In order to minimize the negative effects of heating, it is desired to apply a very high current for a very short duration of time. This thesis investigated the material responses of carbon fiber composite plates subjected to electrical current pulse loads of up to 1700 Amps. For 32 ply unidirectional IM7/977-3 specimens, the peak impact load and absorbed energy increased slightly with the addition of a current pulse at the time of an impact event. In 16 ply cross-ply IM7/977-2 specimens, the addition of the current pulse caused detrimental effects due to electrical arcing at the interface between the composite and electrodes. Further refinement of the experimental setup should minimize the risk of electrical arcing and should better elucidate the effects of a current pulse on the impact strength of the specimens.

Book excerpt: Abstract: Carbon-Fiber Reinforced Polymers (CFRPs) provides superior mechanical properties and low weight, enabling their extensive use in the aerospace industry. Susceptibility to internal damage due to out-of-plane loads and poor electrical properties are some of their major challenges that require to be addressed in order to increase the utilization of composites in further aerospace structures. Lightning strikes can lead to catastrophic damage, inflicting high repair and certification costs. Lightning Strike Protection (LSP) solutions such as integration of metallic meshes or foils into the composite structures, even though effective, impose extra costs and hinders the aircraft performance due to the increased weight of the aircraft.

This book was released on 2006 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The electrical conductivity of polymers can be increased by the addition of conductive fillers, including forms of carbon fibers and carbon black. The resulting composites can be used in applications where metals have typically been the materials of choice. The advantages of using these materials include lighter weight, resistance to corrosion, and the ability to be readily adapted to the needs of a specific application. One of the most significant applications for conductive polymer composites are conductive carbon-polymer composite electrodes. As many properties such as conductivity, mechanical integrity, low permeability, electrochemical activity, and stability in the electrolytes are required of materials to be used as electrodes, so "material selection" plays a crucial role in fabricating these materials. In this work it was found that high density polyethylene (HDPE)/ethylene-propylene-diene monomer(EPDM) blend ratio (70/30) has lower percolation threshold and volume resistivity than individually carbon black filled HDPE and EPDM due to "double percolation" effect. Carbon fibers were also added to the polymer-carbon black mixtures to enhance the conductivity and mechanical properties. The electrical conductivity of composites with different ratios of carbon black (CB) content to carbon fiber (CF) content was studied. The CB content is the main factor to determine the resistivity of the composites filled with CB and CF. Mechanical properties, including tensile strength, elongation at break, and impact strength of the conductive composites were evaluated. The results showed that incorporation of CB and CF in the composites will enhance tensile strength, but decrease elongation at break and impact strength of the composites. In mechanical properties, CF content has a greater effect than CB content. From the comparison of the resistivity and mechanical properties of the composites filled with CB and CF with that of the composites filled with CB only, it is concluded that using CF as a substitute for part of the CB in CB-filled composites can enhance electrical and mechanical properties.
