In the late 1930s the Irish Folklore Commission initiated a project to collect the folklore of the nation. Schoolchildren were recruited to assist in the task of recording local stories, legends and beliefs. The result was the 'Bailiúchan na Scol', or the 'Schools' Collection', compiled from over two million handwritten pages. The stories illustrated herein are adaptations of only a few of these stories; some will be familiar, others not so much. But they all remind us of the rich heritage of Irish storytelling.

Book excerpt: The lore of ancient Ireland comes to life in this collection of classic folk tales retold for modern readers.About James Stephens:James Stephens' birth is somewhat shrouded in mystery. Stephens himself claimed to have been born on the same day and same year as James Joyce (2 February 1882), whereas he is in fact probably the same James Stephens who is on record as being born at the Rotunda Hospital, Dublin, on 9 February 1880, the son of Francis Stephens (c.1840-1882) of 5 Thomas's Court, Dublin, a van man and a messenger for a stationer's office, and his wife, Charlotte Collins (b. c.1847). His father died when Stephens was two years old, and when he was six years old, his mother remarried, and Stephens was committed to the Meath Protestant Industrial School for Boys in Blackrockfor begging on the streets, where he spent much of the rest of his childhood. He attended school with his adoptive brothers Thomas and Richard (Tom and Dick) Collins before graduating as a solicitor's clerk. They competed and won several athletic competitions despite James' tiny stature (he stood 4'10" in his socks). He was known affectionately as 'Tiny Tim'. He was much enthralled by the tales of military valour of his adoptive family and would have become a soldier except for his height. This book has re-edited for correction of any kind of grammatical errors for your clear understanding at the time of when you read.

Here is the insight; ON a time there lived a king and a queen in Erin, and they had an only son. They were very careful and fond of this son; whatever he asked for was granted, and what he wanted he had. When grown to be almost a young man the son went away one day to the hills to hunt. He could find no game, saw nothing all day. Towards evening he sat down on a hillside to rest, but soon stood up again and started to go home empty-handed. Then he heard a whistle behind him, and turning, saw a giant hurrying down the hill. The giant came to him, took his hand, and said: "Can you play cards?" "I can indeed," said the king's son. "Well, if you can," said the giant, "we'll have a game here on this hillside." So the two sat down, and the giant had out a pack of cards in a twinkling. "What shall we play for?" asked the giant. An early book of 19th century, yet tops our present literature books

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fairy and Folk Tales of the Irish Peasantry (1888) is a collection of stories edited by W.B. Yeats. Compiled at the height of the Celtic Twilight, a movement to revive the myths and traditions of Ancient Ireland, Fairy and Folk Tales of the Irish Peasantry captures a wide range of stories, songs, poems, and firsthand accounts from artists and storytellers dedicated to the preservation of Irish culture. In “Frank Martin and the Fairies,” a sickly man discusses the presence of dozens of fairies inside his weaving shop. When a child in his village falls ill, he claims to have seen the fairies building a small, simple coffin, preparing to convey the poor youth from the world of men to their own, shadowy realm. “Bewitched Butter,” a tale from Donegal, recounts a strange event involving two farming families and a prized Kerry cow. When the young Grace Dogherty arrives on the Hanlon’s doorstep asking to milk their cow, Mrs. Hanlon initially refuses her. But after several entreaties, the matriarch relents, allowing the girl to take some of the Kerry cow’s milk. When Moiley stops producing milk, the Hanlon’s fear that Grace has cast an evil eye on the cow, thereby threatening their livelihood. Fairy and Folk Tales of the Irish Peasantry compiles numerous tales of giants, gods, devils, kings and heroes, preserving the legends of Ireland’s past, an age threatened with erasure by science, reason, and modern industrialization. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of W.B. Yeats’s Fairy and Folk Tales of the Irish Peasantry is a classic of Irish literature reimagined for modern readers.
