Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine whether minorities in the University of Wisconsin (UW) System holding category 1 (executive/administrative/ managerial) and category 3 (professional non-faculty) positions perceived mentorship as influential in their career progression, and whether there were statistically significant differences in these perceptions by gender, employment category, or age of the respondents. The survey instrument used in this study was the Minority Perceptions of Mentoring and Career Progression (MPMCP). The surveys were distributed to the population by the Affirmative Action Officers at each of the 13 UW System institutions. Of the 430 surveys distributed, 207 usable surveys were returned and included in the study, resulting in a 48.1 percent return rate. The microcomputer program PC Statistician was used to conduct frequency counts and to analyze the date using chi-square. The analyses showed that male respondents reported mentorship to be influential in their career progression significantly more often than did female respondents. No significant difference was found in the perceived influence of mentorship on career progression by employment category or by age. Post hoc analyses showed that there was no significant difference in the number of mentors by gender reported by male and female respondents who did not perceive mentorship as influential, but a significant difference was found when comparing males and females who perceived mentorship as influential. As a group, the female respondents reported fairly equal numbers of male and female mentors, whereas the male respondents reported a much greater percentage of male mentors. Although the data show that males reported more mentoring experiences than females, had a disproportionally high percentage of male mentors as compared to female mentors, and considered these mentoring relationships to be more influential on their career advancement than females, the reasons for these differences are not known.

Book excerpt: The current military era is the longest period of sustained conflict in the nation's history. Moreover, it is being fought by a contracting volunteer force of less than one half of one percent of the population. As veterans utilize their military benefits in their transition to civilian life, colleges are trying to create a veteran friendly environment and identify the barriers student veterans face. Research has shown that student veterans cited a barrier to inclusion and college success as feeling misunderstood by college faculty. This qualitative phenomenological study examines the perceptions of faculty at mid-western technical colleges and universities. The key objectives of the study were to determine what influences faculty perceptions of student veterans and what were the teaching faculty attitudes toward accommodations for student veterans. Qualitative interviews were conducted with ten faculty from two college systems across three campuses. Subjects were asked a series of questions that explored their background, military heritage, political perceptions and that of their professional peers, significant personal experiences with veterans, knowledge of veteran issues, and other factors that influence their perceptions of student veterans. The findings used interpretational analysis to identify patterns of perception and themes that help understand the objectives of the study.

Faculty members represent a university's important public because they are critical to the success or failure of its overall goals. This study measured faculty members' perceptions of their relationship with Kent State University based on six relationship indicators - "trust, control mutuality, satisfaction, commitment, and communal and exchange relationships. The study was grounded in organization-public relationship scholarship. An online survey was administered to Kent State University faculty members over a 10-day period. Respondents indicated their level of agreement or disagreement with statements describing their relationship with the university. The study found that faculty members believed they have minimal control in the relationship. Faculty members also believed the university engages in exchange relationships more than it does communal. Other findings revealed feelings of neglect among part-time and non-tenure track faculty members.
