Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Carolyn and Annika bring decades of expertise in the care of patients with Anorexia, Bulimia, Binge Eating Disorder, and the many related atypical and subsyndromal variants. Their clinical wisdom, understanding of the experience of sufferers and those who love them, and understanding of these illnesses and the recovery process infuse these pages.” —Diane Mickley, MD, Director, Wilkins Center for Eating Disorders The ever changing field of eating disorder treatment needs innovative new techniques and approaches. As the number of people with these challenging disorders increases at an alarming rate, treatment has not kept pace. The death rate for Anorexia Nervosa in the U.S. is twelve times higher than all other leading causes of death combined for the 15-to-24 age group. Measuring Health from the Inside is a major step forward in treating patients with eating disorders. This important book explains how two simple measurement techniques—Metabolic Testing and Body Composition Analysis—can help patients make rapid progress in understanding their condition and tracking their progress toward recovery. Thousands of patients have been successfully diagnosed and treated by this technology at Carolyn’s clinic and Annika’s private practice. In Measuring Health from the Inside, they explain how the information from the tests can be used to help treat patients not only for their underlying eating disorder but also for the malnutrition that almost always accompanies—and worsens—the condition. Based on their extensive experience, they offer practical guidance for therapists, patients, and loved ones on the often overlooked importance of nutrition in treating eating disorders.

This book was released on 2018-12-19 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Proper nutrition is the single most important component of preventative health care. Heart disease, diabetes, and other ailments are all linked to dietary habits. Accurate nutritional assessment can be a matter of life or death. Laboratory Tests for the Assessment of Nutritional Status explores the expanded number of nutrients that can now be evaluated. The author makes a compelling case for the practice and advancement of this critical health care tool. Nutritional assessment identifies undernutrition, overnutrition, specific nutrition deficiencies, and imbalances. Diligent assessment determines the appropriate nutrition intervention and monitors its effects. This book is a total revision of the 1974 version of the same title co -authored by Sauberlich. Since then, remarkable progress has been made on the methodologies applicable to nutrition status assessment and to the expanded number of nutrients that can be evaluated, especially trace elements. The introduction of high-performance liquid chromatography, amperometric detectors, and other technologies has advanced nutritional assessment by leaps and bounds. Today, nutritionists can gauge the value of microminerals, trace elements, and ultratrace elements. Sauberlich's revision updates the reader to the latest and most important trends in nutrition. These laboratory methods for the assessment of nutritional status are vital for identifying individuals as well as populations with nutritional risks.

Book excerpt: The importance of children’s nutritional status for subsequent human capital formation, the limited evidence of the effectiveness of social protection interventions on child nutrition, and the absence of knowledge on the intra-household impacts of cash and food transfers or how they are shaped by complementary programming motivate this paper. We implemented two, linked randomized control trials in rural Bangladesh, with treatment arms including cash transfers, a food ration, or a mixed food and cash transfer, as well as treatments where cash and nutrition behavior change communication (BCC) or where food and nutrition BCC were provided. Only cash plus nutrition BCC had a significant impact on nutritional status, but its effect on height-forage z scores (HAZ) was large, 0.25SD. We explore the mechanisms underlying this impact. Improved diets – including increased intake of animal source foods – along with reductions in illness in the cash plus BCC treatment arm are consistent with the improvement we observe in children’s HAZ.

Book excerpt: ". . . a useful and long-needed stand-alone clinical manual for nutritional assessment." ---American Journal of Physical Anthropology This is a revised and updated 2nd edition of Anthropometric Standards for the Assessment of Growth and Nutritional Status. The data is based on the most recent available from the government (2003), and reflects the demographic change in the U.S. The easy-to-use tables and graphs have been expanded from age 2 months to 90 years. Designed for physicians, medical students, pediatricians, family doctors, and nutritionists interested in the physical growth and development of adults and children, this book presents in one volume the compilation of the largest database of material on anthropometric standards from National Health Examination surveys. Because the information is presented in tabular and graphic form, medical investigators can easily compare and interpret their findings with the collection of normative values. No other book is as inclusive, as soundly based, or as potentially useful to people interested in nutrition, cardiovascular diseases, anthropometry, and epidemiology. This is a resource that no health care worker should be without. A compact disc (CD) is included with the book for interactive evaluation of nutritional anthropometry in order to determine an individual's percentile and Z-score of the measurements of body size and composition. The CD is divided into three sections: Section 1 is based on anthropometric data source derived from the 3rd National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey conducted during 1994-98. Section 2 is based on weight, height, and body-mass index information developed by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) for children ages 2 months to 20 years. Section 3 contains information developed by the World Health Organization (WHO) on weight and length for children ranging in age from birth to 5 years. All three sections are presented in Excel spreadsheets formatted to allow calculation of age- and sex-specific Z-scores and percentiles directly without the need for additional computer programs or software. A. Roberto Frisancho is Thurnau Professor of Anthropology at University of Michigan.

Book excerpt: EQ-5D from the EuroQol Group is a standardised, non-disease-specific instrument for describing and valuing health. It is in widespread use in many countries and has been applied in many different settings. EQ-5D is now an integral feature of many clinical trials and is increasingly used in population health surveys. This book reports on the results of the European Union-funded EQ-net project which furthered the development of EQ-5D in the key areas of valuation, application and translation. The primary effort concentrated on harmonising and integrating the results of the various EuroQol valuation projects. Most importantly, the book includes a set of VAS-based preference weights for all the EQ-5D health states based on cross-European EQ-5D data. This book provides the most comprehensive account to date of the EuroQol Group endeavour. It will appeal to clinicians, nurses, health services researchers, health economists, those responsible for audit and quality assurance, public health specialists and managers in health care institutions, and the pharmaceutical industry.
