Download or read book Turbulence In Coastal And Civil Engineering written by B Mutlu Sumer and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2020-03-23 with total page 758 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the subject of turbulence encountered in coastal and civil engineering. The primary aim of the book is to describe turbulence processes including transition to turbulence; mean and fluctuating flows in channels/pipes, and in currents; wave boundary layers (including boundary layers under solitary waves); streaming processes in wave boundary layers; turbulence processes in breaking waves including breaking solitary waves; turbulence processes such as bursting process and their implications for sediment transport; flow resistance in steady and wave boundary layers; and turbulent diffusion and dispersion processes in the coastal and river environment, including sediment transport due to diffusion/dispersion.Both phenomenological and statistical theories are described in great detail. Turbulence modelling is also described, and several examples for modelling of turbulence in steady flow and wave boundary layers are presented. The book ends with a chapter containing hands-on exercises on a wide variety of turbulent flows including experimental study of turbulence in an open-channel flow, using Laser Doppler Anemometry; Statistical, correlation and spectral analysis of turbulent air jet flow; Turbulence modelling of wave boundary layer flows; and numerical modelling of dispersion in a turbulent boundary layer, a set of exercises used by the authors in their Masters classes over many years.Although the book is essentially intended for professionals and researchers in the area of Coastal and Civil Engineering, and as a text book for graduate/post graduate students, the contents of the book will, however, additionally provide sufficient background in the study of turbulent flows relevant to many other disciplines, such as Wind Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Environmental Engineering.

Book Synopsis A Review of Unsteady Turbulent Boundary-layer Experiments by :
Download or read book A Review of Unsteady Turbulent Boundary-layer Experiments written by and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essential results of a comprehensive review of existing unsteady turbulent boundary-layer experiments are presented. Different types of unsteady flow facilities are described, and the related unsteady turbulent boundary-layer experiments are cataloged and discussed. The measurements that have been obtained in the various experiments are described, and a complete list of experimental results is presented. All the experiments that measured instantaneous values of velocity, turbulence intensity, or turbulent shear stress are identified, and the availability of digital data is indicated. The results of the experiments are analyzed, and several significant trends are identified. An assessment of the available data is presented, delineating gaps in the existing data, and indicating where new or extended information is needed. Guidelines for future experiments are presented. Book Synopsis A Compilation of Unsteady Turbulent Boundary Layer Experimental Data by : Lawrence W. Carr
Download or read book A Compilation of Unsteady Turbulent Boundary Layer Experimental Data written by Lawrence W. Carr and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive literature search was conducted and those experiments related to unsteady turbulent boundary-layer behavior were cataloged. In addition, an international survey of industrial, university, and government research laboratories was made, in which new and ongoing experimental programs associated with unsteady turbulent boundary-layer research were identified. Pertinent references were reviewed and classified based on the technical emphasis of the various experiments that include instantaneous or ensemble-averaged profiles of boundary-layer variables are stressed. Detailed reviews that include descriptions of the experimental apparatus, flow conditions, summaries of acquired data, and significant conclusions are made. The measurements made in these experiments that exist in digital form have been stored on magnetic tape, and instructions are presented for accessing these data sets for further analysis. (Author).

Download or read book Lecture Series "boundary Layer Theory." written by H. Schlichting and published by . This book was released on 1949 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The subject of turbulent flow is treated in detail. The available data on flow through pipes and over flat plates are presented. Turbulent wakes and jets are treated by means of the Prandtl mixing length theory. A section is devoted to the Gruschwitz method for calculating turbulent boundary layers in accelerated and retarded flows. The methods of Betz and Jones for determining profile drag from wake surveys are given. A chapter on the theory of the stability of the laminar boundary layer, developed from the point of view of small oscillations, is also included.

Book Synopsis Experiments on Controlled, Unsteady, Separated Turbulent Boundary Layers by : W. C. Reynolds
Download or read book Experiments on Controlled, Unsteady, Separated Turbulent Boundary Layers written by W. C. Reynolds and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experiments on turbulent boundary were layers subjected to controlled unsteadiness were performed in a special water channel. The flow is steady in the development section upstream of the unsteady test section where the boundary layer is subjected to an oscillating adverse free-stream velocity gradient sufficient to induce flow reversal near the wall. Measurements of the mean, oscillatory, and turbulence components of the streamwise velocity in the boundary layer indicate that the mean velocity and mean turbulent stresses are unaffected by the oscillations, whereas the periodic components of these quantities are strongly dependent upon frequency. At low frequencies the boundary layer behaves quasistaticly at intermediate frequencies the boundary layer behavior correlates with the Strouhal number based on the length of the unsteady region and at high frequencies the outer region of the boundary layer moves as a slug while the sublayer behaves as a Stokes layer described by laminar equations. Reverse flows occur in this Stokes layer, but the boundary layer remains thin and hence attached to the surface.
