Book excerpt: During the fist year of this two-year grant, we have completed the data acquisition phase at sea along the WOCE-S4 section located along 67°S between 73°W and 172°E in the Pacific sector of the Southern Ocean. The expedition was carried out aboard the Russian Research Ship ''Akademik IOFFE'' in the period February 14 through April 6, 1992. The total CO2 concentration and pCO2 in a total of about 1290 water samples were determined using a coulometer for total CO2 and an equilibrator/gas chromatograph system for pCO2. Surface water samples were analyzed at all the 112 hydrographic stations occupied. Complete or partial profiles were obtained at 58 stations. In addition, a total of 172 determinations were made at sea for 62 bottles of the Standard Reference Solution.

Surface water samples were analyzed at all the 113 hydrographic occupied. Complete or partial profiles were obtained at 58 stations. In addition, a total of 172 determinations were made at sea for 62 bottles of the Standard Reference Solution (Batch No. 7), yielding an average value of 1927 5[+-]1.8 umol/kg. This compares with the SIO manometric value of 1925.74[+-]0.74 umol/kg (9 determinations). The data listed in this report have not been corrected for this discrepancy.

Book excerpt: This data documentation discusses the procedures and methods used to measure total carbon dioxide concentration (TCO2) and partial pressure of CO2 (pCO2) in discrete water samples collected during three expeditions of the Research Vessel (R/V) Knorr in the South Pacific Ocean. Conducted as part of the World Ocean Circulation Experiment (WOCE), the first cruise (WOCE Section P16A/P17A) began in Papeete, Tahiti, French Polynesia, on October 6, 1992, and returned to Papeete on November 25, 1992. The second cruise (WOCE Section P17E/P19S) began in Papeete on December 4, 1992, and finished in Punta Arenas, Chile, on January 22, 1993. The third expedition (WOCE Section P19C) started in Punta Arenas, on February 22 and finished in Panama City, Panama, on April 13, 1993. During the three expeditions, 422 hydrographic stations were occupied. Hydrographic and chemical measurements made along WOCE Sections P16A/P17A, P17E/P19S, and P19C included pressure, temperature, salinity, and oxygen [measured by conductivity, temperature, and depth (CTD) sensor], as well as discrete measurements of salinity, oxygen, phosphate, nitrate, nitrite, silicate, chlorofluorocarbons (CFC-11, CFC-12), TCO2, and pCO2 measured at 4 and 20 C. In addition, potential temperatures were calculated from the measured variables.

In the interim, the smaller R/V Thomas Washington, was pressed into service to carry out lower-latitude portions of WHP lines P16 and P17 during mid-1991 (TUNES Expedition). We installed and operated our underway chromatographic system on this expedition, even though space and manpower on this smaller vessel were limited and no one from our group would be aboard any of the 3 WHP expedition legs. The results for carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide are shown. A map of the cruise track is shown for each leg, marked with cumulative distance. Following each track is a figure showing the carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide results as a function of distance along this track. The results are plotted as dry-gas mole fractions (in ppm and ppb, respectively) in air and in gas equilibrated with surface seawater at a total pressure equal to the barometric pressure. The air data are plotted as a 10-point running mean, and appear as a roughly horizontal line. The seawater data are plotted as individual points, using a 5-point Gaussian smoother. Equal values Of xCO2 in air and surface seawater indicate air-sea equilibrium.
