Book excerpt: This thesis presents a measurement of the top quark polarization in the $t\overline{t}$ events produced in $p\overline{p}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=1.96$ TeV using data corresponding to 9.7 fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The final states used in the measurement contain one lepton and at least three jets. The polarization is measured using the angular distribution of leptons along three different axes: the beam axis, the helicity axis, and the transverse axis normal to the $t\overline{t}$ production plane. This is the first measurement of top quark polarization at the Tevatron Collider in lepton+jets final states, and the first measurement of transverse polarization in $t\overline{t}$ production. The polarization along the beam axis is combined with the previous result in the dilepton final states by the D0 experiment. The observed distributions are consistent with the Standard Model of nearly no polarization and no indication for beyond Standard Model physics is observed. The measurement offers legacy result from unique Tevatron Collider data and provides more information about the top quark production and decays, about the properties of the heaviest elementary particle.

The overall jet energy scale is constrained in situ by the mass of the $W$ boson. We measure $m_t=174.98\pm0.76$ GeV. In conclusion, this constitutes the most precise single measurement of the top-quark mass.

A new Monte Carlo generator POWHEG is used to model the single top quark production processes, which include s-channel, t-channel, and Wt-channel. A neural network multivariate method is exploited to discriminate the single top quark signal from the comparatively large backgrounds. The second measurement presented reconstructs explicitly secondary vertices to d lifetime b-tagging. The measurement combines the muon+jets and the electron+jets channel, using 158.4 pb{sup -1} and 168.8 pb{sup -1}, respectively: {sigma}{sub p{bar p} {yields} t{bar t} + x} = 8.24{sub -1.25}{sup +1.34}(stat){sub -1.63}{sup +1.89}(syst) {+-} 0.54 (lumi) pb.

Book excerpt: We presented measurements of the top quark-antiquark (tt¯) spin correlations and the top quark polarization for tt¯ pairs produced in pp collisions at √s=8 TeV. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 19.5 fb-1 collected with the CMS detector at the LHC. The measurements are performed using events with two oppositely charged leptons (electrons or muons) and two or more jets, where at least one of the jets is identified as originating from a bottom quark. The spin correlations and polarization are measured from the angular distributions of the two selected leptons, both inclusively and differentially, with respect to the invariant mass, rapidity, and transverse momentum of the tt¯ system. Moreover, the measurements are unfolded to the parton level and found to be in agreement with predictions of the standard model. A search for new physics in the form of anomalous top quark chromo moments is performed. Lastly, no evidence of new physics is observed, and exclusion limits on the real part of the chromo-magnetic dipole moment and the imaginary part of the chromo-electric dipole moment are evaluated.

Using a matrix element method, we combine an in situ jet energy calibration with the standard jet energy scale derived in studies of [gamma] + jet and dijet events and employ a novel flavor-dependent jet response correction to measure a top-quark mass of m{sub t} = 176.01 ± 1.64 GeV. Combining this result with a previous result obtained on an independent data set, we measure a top-quark mass of m{sub t} = 174.94 ± 1.49 GeV for a total integrated luminosity of 3.6 fb−1.

Consequently, the quantum state in which a top quark is produced is imparted to its decay products. In particular, its spin state impacts the angular distribution of its decay products. This research presents a measurement of top and antitop spin polarization vectors in tt̅ pair production decaying to lepton-plus-jets final states using data collected with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider in proton-proton collisions with a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20.2 inverse femtobarns. The angles between the lepton and a set of three orthonormal basis axes, one of which is the familiar helicity basis, are measured. The axes are defined such that the tt̅ differential production cross section, with respect to the cosine of the angle for a given axis, is linearly proportional to the polarization along that axis. The polarizations are computed using a profiled likelihood fit to templated distributions of the cosines. The top and antitop helicity polarizations are found to be -0.031 ± 0.023 and -0.059 ± 0.022 respectively.

The top quark mass is extracted using a direct calculation of the probability density that each event corresponds to the t{bar t} final state. The probability is a function of both the mass of the top quark and the energy scale of the calorimeter jets, which is constrained in situ by the hadronic W boson mass. Using 167 events observed in 955 pb−1 of integrated luminosity, they achieve the single most precise measurement of the top quark mass, 170.8 ± 2.2(stat.) ± 1.4(syst.) GeV/c2.

Using data recorded by the D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron collider and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb-1, we measure the forward-backward asymmetry in top-antitop quark events to be $\left(9.2 \pm 3.7\right)\%$, after background processes have been subtracted. After correcting for the effects of acceptance and detector reconstruction, we measure an asymmetry of $\left(19.6 \pm 6.5\right)\%$. In addition, we measure an acceptance-corrected asymmetry based on the lepton from top-antitop quark decay of $\left(15.2 \pm 4.0\right)\%$. We compare these results to predictions from the MC@NLO next-to-leading-order QCD simulation.
