Book excerpt: This Letter describes the current most precise measurement of the WZ production cross section as well as limits on anomalous WWZ couplings at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV in proton-antiproton collisions. The WZ candidates are reconstructed from decays containing three charged leptons and missing energy from a neutrino, where the charged leptons are either electrons or muons. Using data collected by the CDF II detector (7.1 fb−1 of integrated luminosity), 64 candidate events are observed with the expected background contributing 8 ± 1 events. The measured total cross section?(p{bar p} → WZ) = 3.93{sub -0.53}{sup +0.60}(stat){sub -0.46}{sup +0.59}(syst) pb is in good agreement with the standard model prediction of 3.50 ± 0.21. The same sample is used to set limits on anomalous WWZ couplings.

Book excerpt: The standard model (SM) of particle physics has been extensively tested in the past three decades and is found to be in excellent agreement with experimental observations. It is widely assumed, however, that the SM is only a low energy approximation of a more general theory. Therefore, any significant deviation from the SM predictions yields information on the nature of a more fundamental theory. Production of WZ pairs is the least studied diboson process within the SM, as it is a charged final state and can only be produced at hadron colliders. A detailed study of this process probes the electroweak sector of the SM. In addition, searches for new phenomena in the production of heavy gauge boson pairs are interesting, as many extensions of the SM predict 1-4 additional heavy gauge bosons that can decay into a WZ boson pairs.

As a result, limits on anomalous triple gauge couplings of ZZ[gamma] and Z[gamma][gamma] are set that improve on previous experimental results obtained with the charged lepton decay modes of the Z boson.

The detected final states are W [yields] ev[sub e], Z [yields] e[sup +]e[sup [minus]], W [yields] [mu]v[sub [mu]], and Z [yields] [mu][sup +][mu][sup [minus]]. In the ratio of these measurements, many common sources of systematic error cancel and we measure R = [sigma], (p[bar p] [yields] W) [center-dot] Br(W [yields] lv)/ [sigma], (p[bar p] [yields] Z) [center-dot] Br(Z [yields] l[sup +]l[sup [minus]]). Assuming standard model couplings, this result is used to determine the width of the W bosom and to set a limit on the decay W[sup +] [yields] t[bar b].

The gauge bosons are reconstructed using their leptonic decay modes into electrons and muons. The data were collected in 2012 by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb-1. The measured inclusive cross section in the detector fiducial region is ?W±Z→l'?ll = 35.1 ± 0.9(stat) ± 0.8(sys) ± 0.8(lumi) fb, for one leptonic decay channel. In comparison, the next-to-leading-order Standard Model expectation is 30.0 ± 2.1 fb. Cross sections for W+Z and W-Z production and their ratio are presented as well as differential cross sections for several kinematic observables. Limits on anomalous triple gauge boson couplings are derived from the transverse mass spectrum of the W±Z system. From the analysis of events with a W and a Z boson associated with two or more forward jets an upper limit at 95% confidence level on the W±Z scattering cross section of 0.63 fb, for each leptonic decay channel, is established, while the Standard Model prediction at next-to-leading order is 0.13 ± 0.01 fb. Limits on anomalous quartic gauge boson couplings are also extracted.

The rst part of this work will describe the most important physics results of the LEP experiments. Emphasis is put on the properties of the W boson, which was my main research eld at LEP. Especially the precise determination of its mass and its couplings to the other gauge bosons will be described. Details on physics effects like Colour Reconnection and Bose-Einstein Correlations in W-pair events shall be discussed as well. A conclusive summary of the current electroweak measurements, including low-energy results, as the pillars of possible future ndings will be given. The important contributions from Tevatron, like the measurement of the top quark and W mass, will round up the present day picture of electroweak particle physics.

The ZZ cross section is measured to be 1.64 ± 0.46 pb, in agreement with a prediction of the standard model. Combination with an earlier analysis of the ZZ → l+l−l+l− channel yields a ZZ cross section of 1.44{sub -0.34}{sup +0.35} pb.
