Book excerpt: Understanding of protons and neutrons, or "nucleons"â€"the building blocks of atomic nucleiâ€"has advanced dramatically, both theoretically and experimentally, in the past half century. A central goal of modern nuclear physics is to understand the structure of the proton and neutron directly from the dynamics of their quarks and gluons governed by the theory of their interactions, quantum chromodynamics (QCD), and how nuclear interactions between protons and neutrons emerge from these dynamics. With deeper understanding of the quark-gluon structure of matter, scientists are poised to reach a deeper picture of these building blocks, and atomic nuclei themselves, as collective many-body systems with new emergent behavior. The development of a U.S. domestic electron-ion collider (EIC) facility has the potential to answer questions that are central to completing an understanding of atoms and integral to the agenda of nuclear physics today. This study assesses the merits and significance of the science that could be addressed by an EIC, and its importance to nuclear physics in particular and to the physical sciences in general. It evaluates the significance of the science that would be enabled by the construction of an EIC, its benefits to U.S. leadership in nuclear physics, and the benefits to other fields of science of a U.S.-based EIC.

Book excerpt: The production cross section and the kinematic properties of the decay products of the W[gamma] in the W [yields] [mu][nu] decay channel from p[bar p] collisions at [radical]s = 1.96 TeV are presented. The measurement use the high p[sub T] muon data from the upgraded Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF). The data were collected between March 2002 and September 2003. The total integrated luminosities are 192 pb[sup -1] with the muon detector which covers the pseudorapidity region of [eta] [le] 0.6 and 175 pb[sup -1] with the muon detector covering the region 0.6 [le] [eta] [le] 1.0. In the Standard Model the [mu][nu][gamma] final states occur due to W[gamma] [yields] [mu][nu][gamma] production and via muon Bremsstrahlung, W [yields] [mu][nu] [yields] [mu][nu][gamma]. W bosons are selected in their muon decay mode. Additionally, photons with transverse energy above 7 GeV, pseudorapidity in the central region ([eta] 1.1) and muon-photon angular separation [Delta]R([mu], [gamma]) 0.7 are selected. They observe a total of 128 W[gamma] candidates, whereas the Standard Model expectation is 142.4 [+-] 9.5 events. The W[gamma] production cross section is found to be [sigma](p[bar p] [yields] [mu][nu][gamma]) = 16.3 [+-] 2.3(stat.) [+-] 1.8(syst.) [+-] 1.2(lum.) [pb]. The theoretical prediction for this cross section is [sigma](p[bar p] [yields] l[nu][gamma]) = 19.3 [+-] 1.4(th.)[pb]. The Standard Model predictions for several kinematic + variables are compared with data for E[sub T][gamma]> 7 GeV and [Delta]R([mu], [gamma])> 0.7. The measured cross section and the photon and W boson production kinematics are found to agree with the Standard Model predictions.

Results are based on a data sample recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36 inverse picobarns. The electron and muon decay channels of the W and Z are used. The total cross sections are measured for photon transverse energy>10 GeV and spatial separation from charged leptons in the plane of pseudorapidity and azimuthal angle>0.7, and with an additional dilepton invariant mass requirement of> 50 GeV for the Z-gamma process. The following cross section times branching fraction values are found: sigma(pp to W-gamma+X) B(W to lepton neutrino) = 56.3 +/- 5.0 (stat.) +/- 5.0 (syst.) +/- 2.3 (lumi.) pb and sigma(pp to Z-gamma+X) B}(Z to lepton lepton) = 9.4 +/- 1.0 (stat.) +/- 0.6 (syst.) +/- 0.4 (lumi.) pb. These measurements are in agreement with standard model predictions. The first limits on anomalous WW gamma, ZZ gamma, and Z gamma gamma trilinear gauge couplings at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV are set.

Book excerpt: The production of W boson pairs in proton-proton collisions at √s = 8 TeV is studied using data corresponding to 20.3 fb-1 of integrated luminosity collected by the ATLAS detector during 2012 at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The W bosons are reconstructed using their leptonic decays into electrons or muons and neutrinos. Events with reconstructed jets are not included in the candidate event sample. A total of 6636 WW candidate events are observed. Measurements are performed in fiducial regions closely approximating the detector acceptance. The integrated measurement is corrected for all acceptance effects and for the W branching fractions to leptons in order to obtain the total WW production cross section, which is found to be 71.1 ± 1.1(stat)-5.0+ 5.7(syst) ± 1.4(lumi) pb. This agrees with the next-to-next-to-leading-order Standard Model prediction of 63.2-1.4+1.6(scale) ± 1.2(PDF) pb. Fiducial differential cross sections are measured as a function of each of six kinematic variables. In conclusion, the distribution of the transverse momentum of the leading lepton is used to set limits on anomalous triple-gauge-boson couplings.

Book excerpt: We have measured the differential cross section for the gamma n --> pi- p and gamma p --> pi+ n reactions at center of mass angle of 90 degree in the photon energy range from 1.1 to 5.5 GeV at Jefferson Lab (JLab). The data at photon energies greater than 3.3 GeV exhibit a global scaling behavior for both pi- and pi+ photoproduction, consistent with the constituent counting rule and the existing pi+ photoproduction data. Possible oscillations around the scaling value were observed. The cross section ratio of exclusive pi- to pi+ photoproduction at high energy is consistent with the prediction based on one-hard-gluon-exchange diagrams. The data also indicate a resonance structure at a center-of-mass energy near 2.2 GeV.

Book excerpt: The first measurements of the differential cross section for the d(gamma, p)n reaction up to 4.0 GeV were performed at the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) at Thomas Jefferson Laboratory. We report the cross sections at the proton center-of-mass angles of 36{sup o}, 52{sup o}, 69{sup o}, and 89{sup o}. These results are in reasonable agreement with previous measurements at lower energy. The 89{sup o} and 69{sup o} data show constituent-counting-rule behavior up to 4.0 GeV photon energy. The 52{sup o} and 36{sup o} data disagree with the counting-rule behavior.
