Book excerpt: Measurements of di-boson production cross-sections are an important part of the physics programme at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. These physics analyses provide the opportunity to probe the electroweak sector of the Standard Model at the TeV scale and could also indicate the existence of new particles or probe beyond the Standard Model physics. The excellent performance of the LHC through years 2011 and 2012 allowed for very competitive measurements. This thesis provides a comprehensive overview of the experimental considerations and methods used in the measurement of the W+W− production cross-section in proton-proton collisions at √s = 7 TeV and 8 TeV. The treatise covers the material in great detail, starting with the introduction of the theoretical framework of the Standard Model and follows with an extensive discussion of the methods implemented in recording and reconstructing physics events in an experiment of this magnitude. The associated online and offline software tools are included in the discussion. The relevant experiments are covered, including a very detailed section about the ATLAS detector. The final chapter of this thesis contains a detailed description of the analysis of the W-pair production in the leptonic decay channels using the datasets recorded by the ATLAS experiment during 2011 and 2012 (Run I). The analyses use 4.60 fb−1 recorded at √s = 7 TeV and 20.28 fb−1 recorded at 8 TeV. The experimentally measured cross section for the production of W bosons at the ATLAS experiment is consistently enhanced compared to the predictions of the Standard Model at centre-of-mass energies of 7 TeV and 8 TeV. The thesis concludes with the presentation of differential cross-section measurement results.

Book excerpt: This thesis deals with two main procedures performed with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The noise description in the hadronic calorimeter TileCal represents a very valuable technical job. The second part presents a fruitful physics analysis - the cross section measurement of the process p+p → Z0 → τ + τ. The Monte Carlo simulations of the TileCal are described in the first part of the thesis, including a detailed treatment of the electronic noise and multiple interactions (so-called pile-up). An accurate description of both is crucial for the reconstruction of e.g. jets or hadronic tau-jets. The second part reports a Standard Model measurement of the Z0 → τ + τ process with the emphasis on the final state with an electron and a hadronically decaying tau-lepton. The Z0 → τ + τ channel forms the dominant background in the search for Higgs bosons decaying into tau lepton pairs, and thus the good understanding achieved here can facilitate more sensitive Higgs detection.

Book excerpt: This thesis describes the stand-alone discovery and measurement of the Higgs boson in its decays to two W bosons using the Run-I ATLAS dataset. This is the most precise measurement of gluon-fusion Higgs boson production and is among the most significant results attained at the LHC. The thesis provides an exceptionally clear exposition on a complicated analysis performed by a large team of researchers. Aspects of the analysis performed by the author are explained in detail; these include new methods for evaluating uncertainties on the jet binning used in the analysis and for estimating the background due to associated production of a W boson and an off-shell photon. The thesis also describes a measurement of the WW cross section, an essential background to Higgs boson production. The primary motivation of the LHC was to prove or disprove the existence of the Higgs boson. In 2012, CERN announced this discovery and the resultant ATLAS publication contained three decay channels: gg, ZZ, and WW.

Book excerpt: Abstract: On the 4 th of July 2012 the observation of a new neutral particle was announced by the ATLAS [1] and CMS [2] Collaborations. This particle is by now generally considered as the Higgs boson H predicted [3, 4] in the Standard Model of particle physics. Its mass of m H = 125.09 ± 0.24 GeV [5] implies a rich set of final states which allow for experimental studies in regards to this particle and searches for deviations from the properties predicted by the Standard Model. In this thesis a measurement of the gluon-fusion and vector-boson fusion production cross sections times H→WW* branching ratio is presented using final states with one electron and one muon. The measurement is based on proton- proton collisions with an integrated luminosity of 36.1 fb -1 √ recorded with the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider ( LHC ) at s = 13 TeV in 2015 and 2016. Signal-like events are selected in categories with different jet multiplicities. The results are extracted by means of a binned maximum-likelihood fit. To this end, either distributions in multiple discriminant variables or the response of a multivariate classifier are used depending on the category. The results are found to be well compatible with the Standard Model predictions. This analysis is extrapolated to estimate the future precision of such a measurement at the end of the High-Luminosity LHC programme [6]. This extrapolated analysis is combined with analogously extrapolated analyses targeting other production and decay modes of the Higgs boson. Based on this combination the expected precision is determined for future measurements of couplings between the Higgs boson and other particles. Thereby an estimation is given for the anticipated sensitivity of these analyses to signs of physics beyond the Standard Model. In addition studies are presented to identify sources of electron charge misidentification in the reconstruction algorithms employed in the ATLAS Collaboration.

Book excerpt: This thesis discusses searches for electroweakly produced supersymmetric partners of the gauge and the Higgs bosons (gauginos and higgsinos) decaying to multiple leptons, using pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 13 TeV. The thesis presents an in-depth study of multiple searches, as well as the first 13 TeV cross section measurement for the dominant background in these searches, WZ production. Two searches were performed using 36.1/fb of data: the gaugino search, which makes use of a novel kinematic variable, and the higgsino search, which produced the first higgsino limits at the LHC. A search using 139/fb of data makes use of a new technique developed in this thesis to cross check an excess of data above the background expectation in a search using a Recursive Jigsaw Reconstruction technique. None of the searches showed a significant excess of data, and limits were expanded with respect to previous results. These searches will benefit from the addition of luminosity during HL-LHC; however, the current detector will not be able to withstand the increase in radiation. Electronics for the detector upgrade are tested and irradiated to ensure their performance.

This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The predictions of the Standard Model (SM) of particle physics have been probed with remarkable accuracy, so far. The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN has significantly contributed to this quest. A remarkable achievement of the ATLAS and CMS experiments at the LHC was the discovery of the Higgs boson in 2012, the last missing piece of the SM. With the increasing amount of proton-proton collisions delivered by the LHC, more precise measurements of the Higgs boson are now possible, while rare processes are accessible as well. A property of the Higgs boson that is of particular importance is its coupling to the top quark, which is expected to be the strongest in the SM due to the high mass of the top quark. Therefore, its precise measurement is a stringent test of the SM. A direct measurement of the top-quark Yukawa coupling can be assessed through the Higgs-boson production in association with a pair of top quarks (ttH). This thesis presents the measurement of the ttH process with a subsequent Higgs-boson decay to a pair of b-quarks (H -> bb), the decay mode with the largest branching ratio. The measurement is performed with data collected by the ATLAS detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb^-1 at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. Events with one or two charged leptons from the tt decay in the final state are considered to the measurement. The main challenge of the ttH(H -> bb) channel emerges from the large SM backgrounds from the production of top-quark pairs with additional jets (tt+jets). Also the many jets coming from b-hadrons (b-jets) in the final state cause combinatorial ambiguities. Thus, the identification of such jets is decisive in order to determine the signal and reject many background processes. The ttH events are split into exclusive analysis regions, based on the number of leptons, jets, and jets tagged as b-jets, providing regions enhanced in signal, or in the main background components. Specifically in the single-lepton channel, a boosted category is defined by selecting events in which the Higgs boson and possibly also the hadronically decaying top quark are produced with high transverse momentum (pT), with their decay products being collimated in large-radius jets. The single-lepton boosted channel targets events with Higgs-boson candidate pT >= 300 GeV and is the main scope of this thesis. To identify the reconstructed objects with the underlying particles and to maximise the discrimination of the ttH signal from the overwhelming tt+jets background events in the signal-enriched regions, machine-learning algorithms are employed. The background is dominated by a tt process with an additional gluon in the final state which further splits into a pair of b-quarks (tt+bb). Besides, a large number of heavy-flavour jets in the final state is not well modelled, thus many systematic uncertainties have to be considered, decreasing the sensitivity of the measurement. All the defined analysis regions are analysed together in a combined profile likelihood fit to test for the presence of signal. The fit simultaneously determines the event yields for the signal and the most important background component, while constraining the overall background model within the assigned systematic uncertainties. Eventually, the ratio of the measured ttH cross section to the SM expectation in the inclusive cross-section measurement is found to be 0.35 +0.36,-0.34}, corresponding to an observed (expected) significance of 1.0 (2.7) standard deviations. A ttH signal strength larger than the SM prediction is excluded at 95% confidence level. The measurement uncertainty is dominated by systematic uncertainties, mainly regarding the theoretical knowledge of the tt +>= 1b background process. Finally, to further test the SM, the cross-section is measured differentially as a function of the generator-level Higgs-boson pT, taking advantage of the reconstruction of the Higgs-boson kinematics.
