Book excerpt: Inclusive double spin asymmetries have been measured for $\vec{p}$($\vec{e}$,e') using the CLAS detector and a polarized 15NH3 target at Jefferson Lab in 1998. The virtual photon asymmetry A1, the longitudinal spin structure function, g1 (x, Q2), and the first moment [Gamma]$1\atop{p}$, have been extracted for a Q2 range of 0.15-2.0 GeV2. These results provide insight into the low Q2 evolution of spin dependent asymmetries and structure functions as well as the transition of [Gamma]$1\atop{p}$ from the photon point, where the Gerasimov, Drell and Hearn Sum Rule is expected to be satisfied, to the deep inelastic region.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spin structure functions of the nucleon in the region of large x and small to moderate Q2 continue to be of high current interest. The first moment of the spin structure function g1, [Gamma]1, goes through a rapid transition from the photon point (Q2=0), where it is constrained by the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn sum rule, to the deep inelastic limit where it is sensitive to the nucleon spin fraction carried by quarks. The interesting behavior in the transition region is dominated by baryon resonance excitations. We concluded an experiment to measure these observables for deuterium as part of the ''EG1'' run group in Jefferson Lab's Hall B. We used a highly polarized electron beam with energies from 1.6 GeV to 5.7 GeV and a cryogenic polarized ND3 target together with the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) to accumulate over 11 billion events. In this thesis, we present results for the spin structure function g1{sup d} (x, Q2), as well as its first moment, [Gamma]1{sup d}(Q2) in and above the resonance region over a Q2 range from 0.05 to 5 Gev2, based on the data taken with beam energies of 1.6 and 5.7 GeV. We also extract the behavior of A1{sup d}(x) at large x. Our data are consistent with the Hyperfine-perturbed quark model calculation which predicts that A1{sup d} (x 2!1) 2!1. We also see evidence for duality in g1{sup d} (x, Q2) at Q2> GeV2.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A program of spin structure function measurements is underway in Jefferson Lab's Hall B. We use polarized electrons incident on polarized NH3 and ND3 targets to study proton and deuteron spin observables in and above the resonance region. Results from the first set of data taken in 1998 will be presented for the first moment of g1 and for the double polarization asymmetry for exclusive pion production, which is sensitive to the spin structure of the nucleon resonances.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spin structure functions of the nucleon in the region of large z and small to moderate Q2 continue to be of high current interest. Among the topics one can study in this kinematic regime are spin-dependent resonance transition amplitudes and their interference with each other and the non-resonant background, the behavior of the asymmetry A1 at large x, and the presence or absence of local duality in spin structure functions. The first moment of the spin structure function g1 goes through a rapid transition from the photon point (Q2 = 0), where it is constrained by the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn sum rule, to the deep inelastic limit where it is sensitive to the nucleon spin fraction carried by quarks. This opens up the possibility to study the transition from hadronic to quark degrees of freedom over the whole range of Q2. Recently, we concluded a large experimental program to measure these observables with polarized proton and deuteron targets at Jefferson Lab. A highly polarized electron beam, solid polarized NH3 and ND3 targets and the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) in Hall B were used to accumulate over 23 billion events with 4 different beam energies of 1.6, 2.5, 4.2 and 5.7 GeV. We present an overview of the experiment, its kinematic coverage and its statistical power. We show final results from the first run at 2.5 GeV and 4 GeV and preliminary results from the 5.7 GeV and the 1.6 GeV data sets.

Book excerpt: A large program of spin structure measurements is underway in Jefferson Lab's Hall B. Of particular interest is the first moment of the spin structure function g1, which goes through a rapid transition from the photon point (Q2 = 0), where it is constrained by the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn sum rule, to the deep inelastic limit where it is sensitive to the nucleon spin fraction carried by quarks. One can then study the transition from hadronic to quark degrees of freedom over the whole range of Q2. It is also interesting to look for the onset of quark-hadron duality in spin structure functions. We use longitudinally polarized electrons with energies from 1.6 to 5.7 GeV incident upon polarized NH3 and ND3 targets to investigate proton and deuteron spin observables in and above the resonance region. We present the GDH and Bjorken integrals using the 1.6 and 5.7 GeV data and comment on the validity of local quark-hadron duality over the wide kinematical range (0.05? Q2? 4.5 GeV2 and W

Book excerpt: We studied the inclusive reaction e[left arrow above] p[left arrow above] [left arrow] e'X with a 2.5GeV and a 4.2GeV incident beam of polarized electrons. The virtual photon four momentum squared, Q2, varied from 0.2GeV2/c2 to 1GeV2/c2 and the center of mass total energy W ranged up to 2GeV. The measurement was performed at the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) of the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility during the Fall of 1998. A cryogenic NH3 target was used as a source of protons polarized in the direction of the incident electron beam. For the first time, proton spin structure functions were studied with precision in the resonance region. The data indicate that a dramatic change in the spin structure occurs between the deep inelastic high Q2 region and the region of low Q2 where photons become nearly real.

This book was released on 2004 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: E143 was a high precision measurement of the proton and deuteron spin structure functions g1 and g2 in SLAC's End Station A facility, with longitudinally and transversely polarized NH3 and ND3 targets, and a longitudinally polarized electron beam. The experiment was done, at beam energies of 29, 16 and 9.7 Gev. The deeply inelastic scattered electrons were detected by two independent spectrometers at 4.5{sup o} and 7{sup o} relative to the incident electron beam. At a beam energy of 29 Gev, the measurements covered the Bjorken x range from 0.03 to 0.8, and the Q2 range from 1.2 (GeV/c)2 to 9.8 (GeV/c)2 . It was found that the +"1 g1{sup p}(x, Q2)dx is more than two standard deviations away from the Ellis-Jaffe sum rule, and the corresponding deuteron integral is more than three standard deviations away from the Ellis-Jaffe's rule, but the Bjorken sum rule is consistent with the experimental data. Tests of the sum rules at different values of Q2, and the implications of these results for the quark-parton model have also been done.

Book excerpt: The SLAC experiment E155 was a deep-inelastic scattering experiment that scattered polarized electrons off polarized proton and deuteron targets in the effort to measure precisely the proton and deuteron spin structure functions. The nucleon structure functions g1 and g2 are important quantities that help test our present models of nucleon structure. Such information can help quantify the constituent contributions to the nucleon spin. The structure functions g1{sup p} and G1{sup d} have been measured over the kinematic range 0.01 ≤ x ≤ 0.9 and 1 ≤ Q2 ≤ 40 GeV2 by scattering 48.4 GeV longitudinally polarized electrons off longitudinally polarized protons and deuterons. In addition, the structure functions g2{sup p} and g2{sup d} have been measured over the kinematic range 0.01 ≤ x ≤ 0.7 and 1 ≤ Q2 ≤ 17 GeV2 by scattering 38.8 GeV longitudinally polarized electrons off transversely polarized protons and deuterons. The measurements of g1 confirm the Bjorken sum rule and find the net quark polarization to be [Delta][Sigma] = 0.23 ± 0.04 ± 0.6 while g2 is found to be consistent with the g2{sup WW} model.
