Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: Presented in this work are the first ever measurements of the polarization observable Is for a final state with two pions and the first ever measurements of Ic for a final state containing charged pions (let alone the first measurements of both observables for the specialized case of [gamma][rho] -> [rho] [pi]+[pi]- reactions). The presented measurements were made using the high-statistics data available in the CLAS g8b data set. This data were taken at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLab) from July 20th to September 1st of 2005 using linearly polarized photons, an unpolarized liquid hydrogen (LH2 target), and the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS). The highly-polarized photons were produced via bremsstrahlung using an unpolarized electron beam provided by the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) accelerator and a well-oriented diamond radiator. These polarized photons were produced at five different coherent edge energies: 1.3 GeV, 1.5 GeV, 1.7 GeV, 1.9 GeV, and 2.1 GeV. Considering the 200 MeV-wide window of highly polarized photons whose upper limit is the coherent edge energy, and the five different coherent edge energies used, highly polarized photons were produced covering an total energy range of 1 GeV. These data along with the utilized analysis tools have lead to clean, continuous, low-error measurements of Is and Ic which will aide the hadronic physics community in its search for the complete description of one of the most fundamental systems in nature, the baryon.

Book excerpt: Spectroscopic predictions based on first principles are not possible in the non-perturbative regime of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) where the strong coupling constant is large. For this reason, effective theories and models have been developed to determine the masses, couplings, and decay widths of resonances. Various constituent quark models (CQMs) based on three quark degrees of freedom predict numerous baryon resonances that have not been experimentally verified and are thus "missing". The persistent non-observation of these states would present a big problem as the models would have failed to describe physical reality. CQMs predict strong couplings of these unobserved or missing states to gammaN as well as to Neta, Neta[prime] or Deltapi(Delta-->ppi) making photoproduction experiments a promising method to find these missing resonances. Previous analyses of unpolarized data show the importance of polarization obervables because some resonances reveal themselves more clearly in the interference with more dominant amplitudes. In addition, the determination of resonant contributions based on unpolarized data is not unique and requires further constraints provided by single- and double-polarization observables in the Partial Wave Analysis (PWA). A linearly- and circularly-polarized photon beam will be incident on a frozen-spin butanol target in Jefferson Lab's Hall B CLAS detector located in Newport News, Va. This detector allows the target to be polarized both longitudinally as well as transversely giving rise to measurable polarization observables in pi+pi- photoproduction. This experiment (FROST) will shed some light on the problem of the missing baryon resonances serving to better understand the properties of these states.

Book excerpt: We develop polarization observables for the processes [gamma]N → [pi][pi]N and [pi]N → [pi][pi]N, using both a helicity and hybrid helicity-transversity basis. Such observables are crucial if processes that produce final states consisting of a spin-1/2 baryon and two pseudoscalar mesons are to be fully exploited for baryon spectroscopy. We derive relationships among the observables, as well as inequalities that they must satisfy. We also discuss the observables that must be measured in ''complete'' experiments, and briefly examine the prospects for measurement of some of these observables in the near future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The latest update to Bela Liptak's acclaimed "bible" of instrument engineering is now available. Retaining the format that made the previous editions bestsellers in their own right, the fourth edition of Process Control and Optimization continues the tradition of providing quick and easy access to highly practical information. The authors are practicing engineers, not theoretical people from academia, and their from-the-trenches advice has been repeatedly tested in real-life applications. Expanded coverage includes descriptions of overseas manufacturer's products and concepts, model-based optimization in control theory, new major inventions and innovations in control valves, and a full chapter devoted to safety. With more than 2000 graphs, figures, and tables, this all-inclusive encyclopedic volume replaces an entire library with one authoritative reference. The fourth edition brings the content of the previous editions completely up to date, incorporates the developments of the last decade, and broadens the horizons of the work from an American to a global perspective. Béla G. Lipták speaks on Post-Oil Energy Technology on the AT&T Tech Channel.

Book excerpt: Instrument Engineers' Handbook, Third Edition: Process Control provides information pertinent to control hardware, including transmitters, controllers, control valves, displays, and computer systems. This book presents the control theory and shows how the unit processes of distillation and chemical reaction should be controlled. Organized into eight chapters, this edition begins with an overview of the method needed for the state-of-the-art practice of process control. This text then examines the relative merits of digital and analog displays and computers. Other chapters consider the basic industrial annunciators and other alarm systems, which consist of multiple individual alarm points that are connected to a trouble contact, a logic module, and a visual indicator. This book discusses as well the data loggers available for process control applications. The final chapter deals with the various pump control systems, the features and designs of variable-speed drives, and the metering pumps. This book is a valuable resource for engineers.

This is especially so in the area of high performance computing (HPC), where today's supercomputer is tomorrow's workstation. High Performance Computing Systems and Applications is a record of HPCS'98, the 12th annual Symposium on High Performance Computing Systems and Applications. The quality of the conference was significantly enhanced by the high proportion of keynote and invited speakers. This book presents the latest research in HPC architecture, networking, applications and tools. Of special note are the sections on computational biology and physics. High Performance Computing Systems and Applications is suitable as a secondary text for a graduate-level course on computer architecture and networking, and as a reference for researchers and practitioners in industry.

The book has been written in a way as to be as self-contained as possible, and only assumes a basic knowledge of special relativity. Starting from a brief introduction to general relativity, it discusses the different concepts and tools necessary for the fully consistent numerical simulation of relativistic astrophysical systems, with strong and dynamical gravitational fields. Among the topics discussed in detail are the following: the initial data problem, hyperbolic reductions of the field equations, gauge conditions, the evolution of black hole space-times, relativistic hydrodynamics, gravitational wave extraction and numerical methods. There is also a final chapter with examples of some simple numerical space-times. The book is aimed at both graduate students and researchers in physics and astrophysics, and at those interested in relativistic astrophysics.
