Book excerpt: The effective and relative permeabilities of six coals, comprising thirty-five samples, to nitrogen and carbon dioxide were measured as functions of water saturation and overburden pressure. The coals consist of bituminous, sub-bituminous and lignite types. Simulated overburden pressures ranged from 200 psig to 550 psig. All tests were performed over a decreasing water saturation cycle. Values of porosity, absolute permeability, shrinkage and critical gas saturation were measured on numerous samples. Average values are correlated as to coal type and structural orientation whenever the latter was discernible. The results indicate that CO/sub 2/ reduces the effective permeabilities by a moderate amount vis-a-vis nitrogen. The effect of overburden pressure was to drastically reduce the effective permeabilities. The relative permeability curves were significantly distinct as regards coal type and generalized (averaged) results are presented for universal employment. The characteristic shape of the relative permeability curves remain approximately independent of the magnitude of the stress field. In all, sixty-seven cores were tested over the two year period of both contracts, yielding seventy-six effective permeability curves. Thirty-five samples were tested during the current contract period, yielding forty-four effective permeability curves. Numerous other samples were tested for various point values, such as porosity and absolute permeability.

Book excerpt: The effective and relative permeabilities of Gillette, Wyoming sub-bituminous and Pricetown, W. Va. bituminous coals to carbon dioxide were measured as functions of water saturation and structural orientation at simulated overburden pressures of 200 psig and 400 psig. The results indicate that carbon dioxide has a negligible effect on permeability reduction. This fact is of interest to both in-situ coal gasification and to methane drainage. Reductions in permeability were of the order of 0 to 20 percent of values determined with nitrogen. The effect of CO/sub 2/ on the Gillette coals was to drastically alter the shape of the effective and relative permeability curves at lower water saturations. The effect of doubling the overburden pressure had a proportionally inverse effect on the effective permeabilities to gas. This effect is most pronounced at lower water saturations. The general characteristic behavior of the relative permeability curves remained relatively independent of the stress field.

Book excerpt: The effective and relative permeabilities of Hanna, Wyoming sub-bituminous coals and Texas lignites to nitrogen and carbon dioxide were measured as functions of water saturation and structural orientation at simulated overburden pressures of 200 psig and 400 psig. Porosity values derived from water saturation and shrinkage values were also obtained for the six Hanna and three lignite samples which were tested. The results of permeability tests on five Texas lignites reported previously were coupled with the three new runs to obtain average relative permeability curves for the lignites. The present work merely adds to the statistical population developed under the contract and analysis will be a partial function of the final report.

Book excerpt: Gas-phase permeabilities of five samples from the Hanna IV site were measured as functions of water saturation. These samples were cut from a core which was obtained in-situ at a subsurface depth of approximately 335 feet. In addition effective permeabilities to water were measured over an increasing water saturation cycle for three Hanna and two Pittsburgh coals obtained from surface mines. Absolute permeabilities to gas as a function of overburden pressure were measured for one additional Hanna surface sample. Preliminary results of carbon dioxide flows through the three coals are briefly discussed.

Book excerpt: Measurement of the absolute permeability to gas, porosity, and effective and relative permeability to gas of the Pittsburgh bituminous coal and the Hanna, Wyoming subbituminous coal has been extended. The same measurements have been made on several samples from the Gillette, Wyoming subbituminous coal. Shrinkage of both coals with drying was also measured. The gas relative permeability curves of the coals are compared and the difference is striking. The rate of increase in permeability to gas past the critical gas saturation is significantly greater as the rank of the coal decreases. Similarly values of absolute permeability, shrinkage, and porosity are inverse functions of rank. The critical gas saturation does not appear to be a function of rank.

Book excerpt: This work is directed toward support studies for the national program for the development and demonstration of in situ coal gasification processes. The objective of this work is to determine the reaction-controlling variables and reaction kinetics for the gasification of chars obtained by pyrolyzing coal in simulated underground gasification conditions. The reactions being studied and to be studied include steam-char, CO/sub 2/-char, H/sub 2/-char, the water-gas shift reaction, and the methanation reaction. In this report are presented data regarding the kinetics of the reaction of steam with chars prepared from Pittsburgh seam high-volatile bituminous coal. In addition, a reaction model is described correlating the steam-char reaction rates measured earlier for Hanna subbituminous coal with operating conditions including temperature, partial pressures of steam and hydrogen, and extent of carbon gasification. Partial results are presented and discussed for an investigation of structural parameters of Hanna char as a function of pyrolysis conditions and extent of carbon gasified.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Biochar is the carbon-rich product when biomass (such as wood, manure, or crop residues) is heated in a closed container with little or no available air. It can be used to improve agriculture and the environment in several ways, and its stability in soil and superior nutrient-retention properties make it an ideal soil amendment to increase crop yields. In addition to this, biochar sequestration, in combination with sustainable biomass production, can be carbon-negative and therefore used to actively remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, with major implications for mitigation of climate change. Biochar production can also be combined with bioenergy production through the use of the gases that are given off in the pyrolysis process. This book is the first to synthesize the expanding research literature on this topic. The book's interdisciplinary approach, which covers engineering, environmental sciences, agricultural sciences, economics and policy, is a vital tool at this stage of biochar technology development. This comprehensive overview of current knowledge will be of interest to advanced students, researchers and professionals in a wide range of disciplines"--Provided by publisher.
