Book excerpt: The low acoustic velocity of bismuth germanium oxide (Bi12GeO20) has made it an attractive delay line material for achieving long time delays in short spaces. To resolve conflicting published results concerning the values of the elastic, piezoelectric, and dielectric constants of Bi12GeO20, an exhaustive study of the material was made. Over 45 samples of material grown by 3 independent sources were tested. The basic technique adopted for determining the elastic and piezoelectric coefficients involved the frequency measurement of acoustic resonances of thin plates. Since the largest discrepancy between two previous series of measurements was in the value of the piezoelectric constant, this coefficient was determined using three different methods. The first accurate determination of the dielectric constant of Bi12GeO20 at microwave (2 to 4 GHz) frequencies was made by measuring the frequency of a low order TE electromagnetic mode of a disk resonator placed between two semi-infinite conducting planes. A listing of the computer program relating theory and experiment for this measurement is provided. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 1963 the Research Materials Information Center has been answering inquiries on the availability, preparation, and properties of ultrapure inorganic research specimens. It has been possible to do this with reasonable efficiency by searching an automated coded microfilm collection of the report and open literature and of data sheets and question naires provided by commercial and research producers of pure materials. With the growth of the collection to over 70,000 documents and the increase in the demand for more general background information, it has been necessary to compile bibliographies on an increasing variety of subjects. These have been used as indexes to the microfilmed documents for more efficient searching, and in the past distributed in response to individual requests. However, their size and number no longer permit so casual and uneconomic a method of distribution. The "ORNL Solid State Physics Literature Guides" is a practical alternative. Organization The subject organization of the bibliography is given by the Table of Contents. Each section is preceded by a collection of reviews, bibliographies, and "general" papers (i.e., those dealing with methods or equipment rather than single materials, or with such a wide variety of materials that no subsection was appropriate). Coverage is generally from 1960 to mid-1970. Emphasis is on inorganic materials.
Book Synopsis Linear Electrooptic Modular Materials by : J. T. Milek
Download or read book Linear Electrooptic Modular Materials written by J. T. Milek and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This survey of 13 electrooptic materials includes both a review and compilation of all materials properties relevant to their use in linear (Pockels) electrooptic modulator applications. Information on actual electrooptic modulator design as well as applications for these materials, and data on materials exhibiting a quadratic (Kerr) electrooptic effect, are not included. With these restrictions in mind, every attempt was made to be as comprehensive as possible by utilizing all available sources of literature: books, periodicals, reports, and vendor literature. The files of the Electronic Properties Information Center and full resources of the Hughes Aircraft Company Library were searched for pertinent data, and approximately 1000 articles were reviewed for this pUblication. A brief Introduction to the survey is followed by a description of the Prin ciples of Electrooptic Modulation, emphasizing the importance of crystal symmetry on the electrooptic properties of materials, and including the relationships between the electrooptic, piezooptic, elastooptic and piezoelectric effects in crystals. The survey consists of 13 independent sections, each section covering the properties of one material: crystallographic, optical, electrooptic, photoelastic, piezoelectric, dielectric and thermal. References appearing in the text are listed at the conclusion of each section. Tables and Figures are numbered separately for each section. v TABLE OF CONTENTS INTRODUCTION . • . . . . . 1 PRINCIPLES OF ELECTROOPTIC MODULATION. 5 AMMONIUM DIHYDROGEN ARSENATE (ADA) . 15 AMMONIUM DIHYDROGEN PHOSPHATE (ADP).

Book Synopsis Elastic Waves in Solids, Volume 1 by : Daniel Royer
Download or read book Elastic Waves in Solids, Volume 1 written by Daniel Royer and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2022-03-08 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elastic waves are used in fields as diverse as the non-destructive evaluation of materials, medicine, seismology and telecommunications. Elastic Waves in Solids 1 presents the different modes of propagation of elastic waves in increasingly complex media and structures. It first studies the propagation in an unlimited solid where only the material properties are taken into account. It then analyzes reflection and transmission phenomena at an interface with a fluid or a second solid. It explains the search for propagation modes on a free surface or at the interface between two media. Finally, it proposes a study of the dispersive propagation of elastic waves guided by a plate or a cylinder. This book is intended for students completing a master’s degree in acoustics, mechanics, geophysics or engineering, as well as teachers and researchers in these disciplines.

Book Synopsis Ultrasonic Transducer Materials by : O. E. Mattiat
Download or read book Ultrasonic Transducer Materials written by O. E. Mattiat and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-13 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years remarkable progress has been made in the development of materials for ultrasonic transducers. There is a continuing trend towards increasingly higher frequency ranges for the application of ultrasonic trans ducers in modern technology. The progress in this area has been especially rapid and articles and papers on the subject are scattered over numerous technical and scientific journals in this country and abroad. Although good books have appeared on ultrasonics in general and ultrasonic transducers in particular in which, for obvious reasons, materials play an important part, no comprehensive treatise is available that represents the state-of-the-art on modern ultrasonic transducer materials. This book intends to fill a need for a thorough review of the subject. Not all materials are covered of which, theoretically, ultrasonic trans ducers could be made but those that are or may be of technical impor tance and which have inherent electro acoustic transducer properties, i.e., materials that are either magnetostrictive, electrostrictive, or piezoelectric. The book has been devided into three parts which somewhat reflect the historic development of ultrasonic transducer materials for important tech nical application. Chapter 1 deals with magnetostrictive materials, magnetostrictive met als and their alloys, and magnetostrictive ferrites (polycrystalline ceramics). The metals are useful especially in cases where ruggednes of the transducers are of overriding importance and in the lower ultrasonic frequency range.

Book Synopsis Properties of Materials by : Robert E. Newnham
Download or read book Properties of Materials written by Robert E. Newnham and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crystals are sometimes called 'Flowers of the Mineral Kingdom'. In addition to their great beauty, crystals and other textured materials are enormously useful in electronics, optics, acoustics and many other engineering applications. This richly illustrated text describes the underlying principles of crystal physics and chemistry, covering a wide range of topics and illustrating numerous applications in many fields of engineering using the most important materials today. Tensors, matrices, symmetry and structure-property relationships form the main subjects of the book. While tensors and matrices provide the mathematical framework for understanding anisotropy, on which the physical and chemical properties of crystals and textured materials often depend, atomistic arguments are also needed to quantify the property coefficients in various directions. The atomistic arguments are partly based on symmetry and partly on the basic physics and chemistry of materials. After introducing the point groups appropriate for single crystals, textured materials and ordered magnetic structures, the directional properties of many different materials are described: linear and nonlinear elasticity, piezoelectricity and electrostriction, magnetic phenomena, diffusion and other transport properties, and both primary and secondary ferroic behavior. With crystal optics (its roots in classical mineralogy) having become an important component of the information age, nonlinear optics is described along with the piexo-optics, magneto-optics, and analogous linear and nonlinear acoustic wave phenomena. Enantiomorphism, optical activity, and chemical anisotropy are discussed in the final chapters of the book.
