Book excerpt: The results from an experiment to measure the electric, A(Q[sup 2]), and magnetic, B(Q[sup 2]), form factors of the deuteron at large momentum transfers at the Jefferson Laboratory (JLAB) will be reported. The experiment performed elastic electron scattering from deuterium in coincidence; it has improved the quality of the existing data in the range of overlap and has significantly extended the Q[sup 2] range of the previous A(Q[sup 2]) SLAC data. The range in the squared four-momentum transfer, Q[sup 2], is 0.7 to 6.0 (GeV/c)[sup 2] for the A(Q[sup 2]) measurements and 0.7 to 1.4 (GeV/c)[sup 2] for the B(Q[sup 2]) measurements. The measurements used the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator and Hall-A Facilities of JLAB. Incident electron beams of energy 0.5 to 4.4 GeV and current 10 to 120[mu]A were scattered off a high power (500W) cryogenic deuterium/hydrogen target. Scattered electrons and recoiling deuterons were detected in coincidence using the two 4 GeV/c High Resolution Spectrometers (HRS) in Hall-A. Both HRS's used two planes of scintillators for triggering and timing and a drift chamber system for particle tracking. The electron HRS was also equipped with a gas Cherenkov counter and a lead-glass calorimeter for electron identification. Elastic electron-proton scattering in coincidence was used to calibrate the entire double-arm system. The results will be compared to conventional meson-nucleon physics calculations based on the impulse approximation with the inclusion of meson-exchange-currents, and to predictions of dimensional scaling quark models and perturbative quantum chromodynamics. They are expected to provide a crucial test of nuclear chromodynamics ideas and insights into the transition from the meson-nucleon to quark-gluon descriptions of the two-body nuclear structure.
Book Synopsis The G0 Experiment at Jefferson Laboratory by : C. Furget
Download or read book The G0 Experiment at Jefferson Laboratory written by C. Furget and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The G^0 experiment is dedicated to the determination of the strange quark's contribution to the electric and magnetic nucleon form factors, provided by parity-violating asymmetries of cross-sections measured with longitudinaly polarized electrons in elastic electron-proton scattering and quasi-elastic electron-deuteron scattering. Forward angle measurements, which have been performed in Hall C of Jefferson Laboratory, have provided a linear combination of electric and magnetic vector form factors for momentum transfers in the range 0.1 to 1 (GeV/c)^2. Backward angle measurements, which will be performed starting in 2006, will allow the complete separation of the form factors at Q^2 of 0.23 and 0.63 (GeV/c)^2.

Book Synopsis The G0 Experiment at Jefferson Laboratory by : C. Furget
Download or read book The G0 Experiment at Jefferson Laboratory written by C. Furget and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The G0 experiment aims to measure parity-violating asymmetries in elastic electron-proton and quasi-elastic electron-deuteron scattering. This experimental program allows to perform the separation of the electric and magnetic weak neutral and axial form factors for three different momentum transfers 0.3, 0.5 and 0.8 (GeV/c)2. The first part of the experiment has been performed in Hall C of Jefferson Laboratory with a commissioned setup. A preliminary analysis of the data has provided a first estimate of the main systematic uncertainties. The analysis to determine the actual physics asymmetries is proceeding.

Book Synopsis Testing QCD Through Spin Observables in Nuclear Targets by : Don G. Crabb
Download or read book Testing QCD Through Spin Observables in Nuclear Targets written by Don G. Crabb and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2003 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the invited talks and contributed papers presented at the workshop on ?Testing QCD Through Spin Observables in Nuclear Targets?, held at the University of Virginia in April 2002.The workshop was proposed in the context of the large number of experiments that have used polarized deuterons or polarized 3He to extract information about the spin parameters of the neutron. The motivation for this workshop was to study the effects of the nuclear medium on the spin properties of the bound nucleon and to explore issues in QCD that might be resolved through spin observables in nuclear targets: What is the effect of the nuclear medium on the measured asymmetries? How have the latest results on the spin structure of the nucleon and the nucleon form factors changed our thinking? What advances are anticipated in the development of polarized targets?

Book Synopsis Neutron Electromagnetic Form Factors by :
Download or read book Neutron Electromagnetic Form Factors written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Because of the lack of a free neutron target, deuterium targets had been used extensively in studying the neutron structure in the past from unpolarized electron-deuteron scattering experiments. Only recently polarized electron-deuteron scattering measurements have been performed which yield more precise information on the charge form factor of the neutron. The unique spin structure of the 3He ground state wave function and the recent developments in polarized target technologies have been employed in the last decade or so at all major electron accelerator facilities in experiments probing the neutron electromagnetic structure. In this talk, the author reviews the experimental status of the neutron electromagnetic form factor studies. The recently completed Jefferson Lab experiment E95-001, a precision measurement of the neutron magnetic form factor at low Q2 is discussed, also discussed are some of the future experiments.

Book Synopsis Hadron Physics by : I.J. Douglas MacGregor
Download or read book Hadron Physics written by I.J. Douglas MacGregor and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2006-07-07 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Straddling the traditional disciplines of nuclear and particle physics, hadron physics is a vital and extremely active research area, as evidenced by a 2004 Nobel prize and new research facilities, such as that scheduled to open at CERN. Scientifically it is of vital importance in extrapolating our knowledge of quark-gluon physics at the sub-nucleon level to provide a wider perspective of strongly interacting hadrons, which make up the vast bulk of known matter in the Universe. Through detailed, pedagogical chapters contributed by key international experts, Hadron Physics maps out our contemporary knowledge of the subject. It covers both the theoretical and experimental aspects of hadron structure and properties along with a wide range of specific research topics, results, and applications. Providing a full picture of activity in the field, the book highlights three particular areas of current research: computational lattice hadron physics, the structure and dynamics of hadrons, and generalized parton distributions. It provides a solid introduction, includes background theory, and presents the current state of understanding of the subject.
