An incredibly precise measurement of the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon is reported, a fresh result from the Brookhaven National Laboratory. Apart from these distinct physics highlights, there are also the first results from the new Tevatron run and from the relativistic heavy ion collider RHIC. Theorists write of our ever better understanding of the Standard Model and of what might lie beyond. With no evident symmetry principle behind its existence, it is not as well understood as the SU(3)×SU(2)×U(1) gauge interactions. Yet it tends to be underrated, sometimes even ignored, by the erudite. This is especially so on the verge of the LHC era, where the exploration of the physics of electroweak symmetry breaking at the high energy frontier would soon be the main thrust of the ?eld. Yet, the question of “Who ordered the muon?” by I. I. Rabi lingers. We do not understand why there is “family” (or generation) replication. That three generations are needed to have CP violation is a partial answer. We do not understand why there are only three generations, but Nature insists on (just about) only three active neutrinos. But then the CP violation with three generations fall far short of what is needed to generate the baryon asymmetry of the Universe. We do not understand why most fermions are so light on the weak symmetry breaking scale (v. e. v. ), yet the third-generation top quark is a v. e. v. scale particle. We do not understand why quarks and leptons look so different, in particular, why neutrinos are rather close to being massless, but then have (at least two) near maximal mixing angles. We shall not, however, concern ourselves with the neutrino sector. It has a life of its own.

Over the past two decades these three disciplines have increasingly become closer. Historically there was always a strong overlap between particle physics and cosmology. This connection has become even stronger with the realization that some of the fundamental issues in cosmology such as the presence of dark matter and dark energy may possibly find a resolution only via new theories of particle physics. At the same time string theory has begun to play an increasingly important role in particle physics as a possible framework for building unified models of particle interaction including gravity. In recent years we have seen an increasing overlap between cosmology and string theory and currently the area of string cosmology is one of the most active fields of research. PASCOS 2005 aimed to provide coherent discussions of recent developments on the interface of the three disciplines and also on their interconnections. In particular, superstring aspects in low energy particle theory (SUSY) and cosmological applications (moduli stabilization) are extensively covered in this volume. Topics include dark matter and dark energy, baryogenesis, flavor and CP violation, neutrino physics, supersymmetry and extra dimensions, flux compactification, string model building, as well as brane cosmology.
