Book excerpt: In this thesis, acoustic measurement techniques related to the absorbing as well as the scattering properties of architectural surfaces are investigated. The research is divided into two parts: the first part consists of determining the most relevant causes of uncertainty for the standardized measurement methods of random-incidence absorption and scattering coefficients. A method is developed to determine the necessary minimum number of source-receiver combinations in the reverberation chamber to ensure a specified precision of the absorption or scattering coefficient. The second part of the thesis focuses on a hemispherical microphone array and signal processing steps related to the measurement of angle-dependent reflection properties. Measurements show that the array setup can be used to obtain the angle-dependent absorbing properties of samples with few source positions. With the help of array signal processing methods, the setup can also be used to determine the directional diffusion and scattering coefficient of small samples, yielding the same result as established far-field methods.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The appearance attributes of aluminum surfaces are measured using integrating sphere instruments commercially available. Total (TR) and diffuse reflectance (DR) values are obtained on the instrument. The specular reflectance (SR) is the difference: SR=TR-DR The term, "specularity" or "specular reflectance factor" (SRF), is calculated: SRF=100[SRTR] and is a numerical value of the visual "brightness" or mirror qualities of the surface. Examples of various appearance properties are given to illustrate the practical application of the method.

Book excerpt: This book describes the theory of radiation thermometry, both at a primary level and for a variety of applications, such as in the materials processing industries and remote sensing. This book is written for those who will apply radiation thermometry in industrial practice; use radiation thermometers for scientific research; the radiation thermometry specialist in a national measurement institute; developers of radiation thermometers who are working to innovate products for instrument manufacturers, and developers of non-contact thermometry methods to address challenging thermometry problems. The authors of each chapter were chosen from a group of international scientists who are experts in the field and specialists on the subject matter covered in the chapter. A large number of references are included at the end of each chapter as a resource for those seeking a deeper or more detailed understanding. This book is more than a practice guide, readers will gain in-depth knowledge in: (1) the proper selection of the type of thermometer; (2) the best practice in using the radiation thermometers; (3) awareness of the error sources and subsequent appropriate procedure to reduce the overall uncertainty; and (4) understanding of the calibration chain and its current limitations. Covers all fundamental aspects of the radiometric measurements Discusses practical applications with details on the instrumentation, calibration, and error sources Authors are from leading national labs working in R&D of temperature measurements

Book excerpt: Progress in Astronautics and Aeronautics, Volume 18: Thermophysics and Temperature Control of Spacecraft and Entry Vehicles is a selection of technical papers based on two American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics meetings, namely, The Thermophysics Specialist Conference, held in Monterey, California on September 13-15, 1965 and the Third Aerospace Sciences Conference, held in New York on January 1966. This book covers the most important problems of thermophysical research and technology. This volume is composed of six parts encompassing 42 chapters. Part I contains papers on the thermal radiation properties of solids, including measuring techniques for solar reflectance and infrared emittance determination, and a paper on radiative transfer. Part II deals with the lunar and planetary thermal environment and includes research papers on emissivities, reflectivities, and polarization by planetary atmospheres and planetary surfaces. Part III discusses the effects of the space environment on the optical properties of thermal control surfaces. This part also presents results of flight experiments with sensors of environmental effects and flight experience with thermal coatings of satellites. Part IV covers the thermophysical measurements of ablative materials and with the char layers formed during the actual vehicle entry period or during laboratory simulation tests. Part V looks into the two comparatively areas of thermophysics, namely, the thermal similitude (thermal modeling) and interface resistance of joints under space conditions. Part VI summarizes the practical experience in thermal design gained on spacecraft flights. Thermophysicists, space engineers and designers, and research workers who are interested in thermophysical technology will find this book invaluable.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scientists from academic and the paper industry compile as many aspects of testing properties of paper as possible into a broad reference to help people who plan, specify, and evaluate the physical and mechanical testing of paper material take advantage of the many developments in recent years. An initial essay in each volume discusses the independent invention and widespread use of paper in Mesoamerica beginning sometime before AD 660. The two volumes are paged and indexed separately, but do not seem to be topically distinct. The first edition, Handbook of Physical and Mechanical Testing of Paper and Paperboard appeared in 1983; the second contains 30 chapters, a third of which are new and the others substantially revised, updated, and expanded. c.
