Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A proposal was approved by CEBAF PAC7 to measure angular distributions of the proton polarization for the d([gamma], p)n reaction in the GeV region. This proposed measurement will test the validity of extensions of conventional nuclear-physics theories to the higher energy regime. The results of the experiment will further constrain the evidence from SLAC experiments NE8 and NE17 that asymptotic scaling was observed above a photon energy of 1.3 GeV. Photoproton polarization measurements at lower energy indicate that the magnitude of the polarization increases with energy. This is consistent with the observation that polarizations are large in high-energy processes, e.g. A{sub nn} in pp 2!pp scattering or A{sub y} in pp 2![pi]°X. However, the polarizations in hadron-hadron scattering are believed to arise from Landshoff mechanisms. The higher energy photoproton experiment will permit the first measurements of polarization for a reaction, [gamma]d 2!pn, where there are no Landshoff terms. The experiment would make use of a polarimeter installed in either the High Resolution Spectrometer in Hall A or the Short Orbit Spectrometer in Hall C at CEBAF.

The experiment was performed at quasifree kinematics for energy and momentum transfer (w, q) = (294 MeV, 765 MeV/c) and sampled a missing momentum range of 0-250 MeV/c. The induced polarization arises from final-state interactions and for these kinematics is dominated by the real part of the spin-orbit optical potential. The distorted-wave impulse approximation provides good agreement with data for the 1 p3/2 shell. The data for the continuum suggest that both the 1s1/2 shell and underlying l> 1 configurations contribute.

Book excerpt: The University of Pittsburgh cyclotron and scattering system were used to investigate the angular distributions of the proton polarization for the following reactions: C/sup 12/(d, p)C/sup 13*/; Mg/sup 24/(d, p)Mg/sup 25*/; Be/sup 9/(d, p Be/sup 10*/; Si/sup 28/(d, p)Si/sup 29*/. For each reaction a measurement of the polarization at approximately every 5 deg between 10 and 80 deg was made. Deuteron elastic cross sections for the Be/sup 9/ and Si/sup 28/ reactions were measured. Data are shown in tables and figures. Results are compared with theoretical predictions and with results of other investigators. The validity of the sign rule and the possibility of determining j, from proton polarization measurements by some method other than the sign rule are discussed. (A.G.W.).

Book excerpt: The average polarization of the?− produced in the reaction?− + p →?− + K has been measured between center-of-mass angles 134{sup o} and 166{sup o} for an incident?− momentum of 1145 MeV/c. A polarized proton target was used, and the?− polarization was found by measuring the difference in the production-rate of K+ mesons for protons polarized along the production-plane normal and against it. Spark chambers were used to record the?− and K+ trajectories, and the?− momentum was obtained from a magnetic spectrometer while the K+ momentum was obtained from a range telescope. Each event was kinematically reconstructed in a one constraint fit to help eliminate events produced from protons bound in heavy nuclei of the target. The?− polarization was found to be -0.36 ± 0.46.

These are the first measurements of all three polarization components and determination of the proton's form factors via spin transfer rather than Rosenbluth separation. The ratio GE(P)/GM(P) is obtained in a nearly systematic free manner. The measured polarizations are consistent with the Plane Wave Impulse Approximation (PWIA). This is the first experiment to use the newly built BATES-FPP and that device is described in detail.
