It is imperative to accurately determine the neutron spectrum in order to assess the secondary cancer risks posed to the patients by these neutrons. Instruments like the Nested Neutron Spectrometer (NNS) can be used to measure the neutron fluence spectra but the active neutron detector in the spectrometer may be inaccurate when the neutron fluence rate is high due to pulse pileup. Wedeveloped a passive NNS with gold foils that may be operated in high fluence rate environments without suffering from pulse pileup. The passive NNS was used to measure the neutron fluence spectrum at 100 cm from isocentre, along the treatment couch, that was generated by a Varian TrueBeam linac operated at 15 MV. The specific saturation activities of the irradiated gold foils were determined post-irradiation using a high purity germanium detector. To process the measured activities, the response functions of the passive NNS were required. The response functions were generated by first modelling the passive NNS, including moderator shells and gold foils, within the Geant4 v10.4 simulation environment. Simulated irradiations of monoenergetic neutrons were then performed to determine the number of (n,g) neutron capture reactions per unit neutron fluence as a function of neutron energy (i.e. detector response). Theresponse functions generated showed that the detector response shifts to higher energies as the neutron moderator thickness increases, as expected.Using the response functions, the data were iteratively unfolded (i.e. deconvoluted) using the Maximum-Likelihood Expectation-Maximization (MLEM) algorithm to obtain the neutron fluence-rate spectrum at the location of the measurement. The spectrum had two prominent peaks: (i) a dominant peak at the fast neutron energy and (ii) a small peak at the thermal energies. This spectrum was also compared with the spectrum generated with a conventional NNS"--

This book was released on 1987 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are studying the relationship between neutron energy and track-size distribution on electrochemically etched CR-39 foils using a two-stage etching procedure. Although the electrochemical etching process alters the track size, we now find that the track diameter is related to the neutron energy even after the second stage (blowup) is completed. This relationship is complex, being effected by the etching parameters, including oven temperature, etching high voltage, and etching time. Current studies are directed at establishing the effect of each of these parameters on the track-size distribution and at determining an optimal etching procedure for neutron spectra evaluation. If neutron spectral information can be determined from the track-size distribution, dose can be calculated directly from the neutron fluence and spectrum.

McElroy and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A multiple foil activation iterative method has been developed to determine neutron flux spectra. A computer code (SAND II) has been written which provides a 'best fit' neutron differential flux spectrum for a given input set of infinitely dilute foil activities. The results of experimental and analytical studies for a wide variety of neutron environments strongly suggest that, in addition to determining neutron flux spectra, the multiple foil activation iterative method can be helpful in (1) the validation and improvement of calculational techniques used to predict flux spectra; (2) upgrading of confidence in neutron spectrometer measurements; (3) determining the reliability of foil activity measurements methods; (4) assessing material scattering/ absorption effects; and (5) examining current foil detector cross section evaluations to provide guidance for re-evaluation for these data, and eventual 'unfolding' of the absolute differential form of cross sections for any foil reactions producing a detectable product.

This book was released on 2012 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of this work was to develop a foil activation method to measure high-energy (1--120 MeV) neutron flux spectra at the Spallation Neutron Source by researching the scientific literature, assembling an experimental apparatus, performing experiments, analyzing the results, and refining the technique based on experience. The primary motivation for this work is to provide a benchmark for the neutron source term used in target station and shielding simulations Two sets of foil irradiations were performed, one at the ARCS beamline and one at the POWGEN beamline. The gamma radiation of the foil activation products was measured with a high purity germanium gamma-ray spectrometer, and the product reaction rates during irradiation were quantified. Corrections, such as self-shielding factors, were applied to the measurements to account for particular effects. The corrected measurement data, along with calculated response functions and an initial guess spectrum, were input to the MAXED neutron spectrum unfolding computer code. MAXED uses the maximum entropy method to unfold an output spectrum that is the minimally modied guess spectrum consistent with the measurement data. The foil irradiation and subsequent analysis from the ARCS spectrum produced a reasonable neutron spectrum, which noticeably differed from the initial guess spectrum. This measurement is regarded as consistent, but yet unverified. The gamma-ray spectrum of the foil irradiation at the POWGEN beamline showed no high-energy activation. This is regarded as an experimental error, and no conclusions can be drawn about the high-energy neutron spectrum. Future foil irradiations are planned to verify and expand the neutron spectrum measurements.
