Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors present measurements of the CP-violation parameters S and C for the radiative decays B° →?°K{sub S}°? and B° →?K{sub S}°?; for B →?K? they also measure the branching fractions and for B →?K+? the time-integrated charge asymmetry A{sub ch}. The data, collected with the BABAR detector at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, represent 467 x 106 B{bar B} pairs produced in e+e− annihilation at the PEP-II collider. In this summary they present an updated measurement of the time-dependent CP asymmetry in B° →?°K{sub S}°? decay mode and the first measurement of the time-dependent CP asymmetry in B° →?K{sub S}°? decay mode. Hadronic corrections in B° →?°K{sub S}°? decay mode might permit S to be as large as ± 0.1. Such corrections and NP effects could depend on m(?°K{sub S}°), so they split the data into two parts: the K*(892) region with 0.8

Book excerpt: This dissertation presents two analyses performed on data collected with the BABAR detector at the SLAC PEP-II e{sup +}e{sup -} asymmetric-energy B Factory. First, a Dalitz analysis is shown that performs the first measurement of CP violation parameters in the decay B{sup -} {yields} D{sub {pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -}{pi}{sup 0}}K{sup -} using the decay rate asymmetry and D{sup 0} - {bar D}{sup 0} interference. The results can be used to further constrain the value of the CKM angle {gamma}. The second analysis studies the properties of the X(3872) in neutral and charged B {yields} J/{psi}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -}K decays. Measurements of the branching ratio and mass are presented as well as the search for additional resonances at higher masses.

This book was released on 2003 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The BABAR experiment at SLAC provides an opportunity for measurement of CP violation in B decays. A measurement of time-dependent CP violating asymmetries using exclusive B meson decays where the b quark decays to c{bar c}d (including B° 2!D*D*− and B° 2!D*{sup ±}D{sup {-+}} decays) is presented here. This is the first measurement of CP violation in a mode sensitive to the Unitarity Triangle parameter sin2[beta] outside of decays containing charmonium. It provides a comparison to measurements of sin2[beta] using b 2!c{bar c}s, and permits an observation into potential new physics sources of CP violation, such as supersymmetry, via differences between these measurements and those of B° 2!J/[psi] K{sub S}° as statistics of reconstructed neutral B decays to D{sup (*)+} D{sup (*)-} increase. The measured value of the time-dependent CP violating asymmetries are: S = 0.38 ± 0.88(stat) ± 0.12(syst) and C = -0.30 ± 0.50(stat) ± 0.13(syst) for B° 2!D*− D; S = -0.43 ± 1.41(stat) ± 0.23(syst) and C = 0.53 ± 0.74(stat) ± 0.15(syst) for B° 2!D*+ D−; and S = -0.05 ± 0.45(stat) ± 0.05(syst) and C = 0.12 ± 0.30(stat) {+-} 0.05(syst) for B° 2!D*− D+; where S corresponds to CP violation in the interference of mixing and decay and C corresponds to CP violation in decay.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We present new measurements of CP asymmetries in B° → (c{bar c})K{sup 0(*)} decays recorded by the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy B Factory at SLAC between 1999 and 2004. We determine sin2[beta] from decay-time distributions of 7730 signal events in a data sample of approximately 227 x 106 [Upsilon](4S) → B{bar B} decays. The measured value of sin2[beta] = 0.722 ± 0.040(stat) ± 0.023(syst) is in agreement with the value expected from the Standard Model. In a separate time-dependent angular analysis of B → J/[psi] K*° (K*° → K{sub S}°[pi]°) decays we measure cos 2[beta] to be positive at 86% CL.

This book was released on 2010 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary goals of the BABAR experiment are the detection of CP violation (CPV) in the B meson system, the precise measurement of some of the elements of the CKM matrix and the measurement of the rates of rare B meson decays. At present, BABAR has achieved major successes: (1) the discovery, in neutral B decays, of direct and mixing-induced CP violation; (2) accurate measurements of the magnitudes of the CKM matrix elements.
Book Synopsis CP Violation in B Decays and the BaBar Experiment by :
Download or read book CP Violation in B Decays and the BaBar Experiment written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the first year of data taking, the 1999-2000 run, the BABAR detector at the SLAC PEP-II asymmetric collider has collected an integrated luminosity of 20.7 fb−1 corresponding to 22.7 million B{bar B} pairs at the [Upsilon](4S) resonance. Using this data, we present the measurement of sin2[beta] based on samples of B° → J/[psi] K{sub S}°, B° → [psi](2S) K{sub S}° and B° → J/[psi] K{sub L}° L decays. Our measured value is sin2[beta] = 0.34 ± 0.20 (stat) ± 0.05 (syst). In addition we report on the measurement of branching fractions for exclusive B decays to charmonium final states, measurements of charged and neutral B meson lifetimes and also the B°{bar B}° oscillation frequency.

This book was released on 2006 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The phenomenon of CP-violation in weak interactions, discovered in 1964 in decays of neutral kaons, receives a simple and elegant explanation in the Standard Model with three generations of quarks. Indeed, in this model the common source of CP-asymmetry phenomena is represented by a simple complex phase in the unitary matrix (the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix) describing the charged weak couplings of the quarks. This simple scheme has never received an accurate validation, because the phenomenological parameters determined from measurements of CP-violation in kaons decays are related to the fundamental parameters of the theory in a complex way, sensitive to large theoretical uncertainties. On the contrary, decays of neutral B mesons like B{sup 0} {yields} J/{psi} K{sub S}{sup 0} represent a unique laboratory to test the predictions of the theory because they are expected to show significant CP-violation effects, the magnitude of which is cleanly related to the Standard Model parameters. Thus experimental facilities have been built with the purpose of performing extensive studies of B decays. The BABAR experiment is operating at one of these facilities, at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. It is collecting data at the PEP-II asymmetric e{sup +}e{sup -} collider (E{sub e{sup -}} = 9.0 GeV; E{sub e{sup +}} = 3.1 GeV), a high-luminosity accelerator machine (L = 3 x 10{sup 33} cm{sup -2}s{sup -1}). The center-of-mass energy (10.58 GeV) of the e{sup +}e{sup -} system at PEP-II allows resonant production of the {Upsilon}(4S), a b{bar b} bound state, which decays almost exclusively in a B{sup 0}{bar B}{sup 0} or a B{sup +}B{sup -} pair. A high-acceptance detector, projected and built by a wide international collaboration, detects and characterizes the decay products of the B mesons. From the analysis of the data collected during the first two years of operation, the BABAR collaboration has established CP-violation in decays of neutral B mesons at the 4.1{sigma} level. Besides the primary goal of CP-violation studies, the high luminosity of PEP-II, coupled with the high acceptance of the BABAR detector, allows competitive studies of the properties of a wide set of B decay modes. In particular, measurements of non-leptonic decays are extremely useful to understand the dynamics of the non-perturbative strong interactions involved in these processes. In this thesis a study of the non-leptonic decay mode B{sup {+-}} {yields} J/{psi}{pi}{sup {+-}} is presented.

Book excerpt: We study the decay B− → DK*− using a sample of 379 x 106?(4S) → B{bar B} events collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II B-factory. We perform a 'GLW' analysis where the D meson decays into either a CP-even (CP+) eigenstate (KK−,?+?−), CP-odd (CP- ) eigenstate (K{sub S}°?°, K{sub S}°?, K{sub S}°?) or a non-CP state (K−?+). We also analyze D meson decays into K+?− from a Cabibbo-favored {bar D}° decay or doubly suppressed D° decay ('ADS' analysis). We measure observables that are sensitive to the CKM angle?: the partial-rate charge asymmetries A{sub CP±}, the ratios R{sub CP±} of the B-decay branching fractions in CP± and non-CP decay, the ratio R{sub ADS} of the charge-averaged branching fractions, and the charge asymmetry A{sub ADS} of the ADS decays: A{sub CP+} = 0.09 ± 0.13 ± 0.06, A{sub CP-} = -0.23 ± 0.21 ± 0.07, R{sub CP+} = 2.17 ± 0.35 ± 0.09, R{sub CP-} = 1.03 ± 0.27 ± 0.13, R{sub ADS} = 0.066 ± 0.031 ± 0.010, and A{sub ADS} = -0.34 {+-} 0.43 {+-} 0.16, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. Combining all the measurements and using a frequentist approach yields the magnitude of the ratio between the Cabibbo-suppressed and favored amplitudes, r{sub B} = 0.31 with a one (two) sigma confidence level interval of [0.24, 0.38] ([0.17, 0.43]). The value r{sub B} = 0 is excluded at the 3.3 sigma level. A similar analysis excludes values of? in the intervals [0, 7]{sup o}, [55, 111]{sup o}, and [175, 180]{sup o} ([85, 99]{sup o}) at the one (two) sigma confidence level.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We present a study of the decay B− 2!D{sub (CP)}°K− and its charge conjugate, where D{sub (CP)}° is reconstructed in both a non-CP flavor eigenstate and in CP (CP-even and CP-odd) eigenstates, based on a sample of 382 million [Upsilon](4S) 2!B{bar B} decays collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II ee− storage ring. We measure the direct CP asymmetries A{sub CP±} and the ratios of the branching fractions R{sub CP±}: A{sub CP+} = 0.27 ± 0.09(stat) ± 0.04(syst), A{sub CP-} = -0.09 ± 0.09(stat) ± 0.02(syst), R{sub CP+} = 1.06 ± 0.10(stat) ± 0.05(syst), R{sub CP-} = 1.03 {+-} 0.10(stat) {+-} 0.05(syst). These results will help to better constrain the gamma phase parameter of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa quark mixing matrix.

Download or read book Measurements of CP-Violating Asymmetries in the Decay B0 to K+ K- K0 written by and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors analyze the decay B° 2!KK−K° using 383 million B{bar B} events collected by the BABAR detector at SLAC to extract CP violation parameter values over the Dalitz plot. Combining all KK−K° events, they find A{sub CP} = -0.015 ± 0.077 ± 0.053 and [beta]{sub eff} = 0.352 ± 0.076 ± 0.026 rad, corresponding to a CP violation significance of 4.8[sigma]. A second solution near [pi]/2 - [beta]{sub eff} is disfavored with a significance of 4.5[sigma]. They also report A{sub CP} and [beta]{sub eff} separately for decays to [phi](1020)K°, f0(980)K°, and K+K−K° with m{sub K{sup +}K−}> 1.1 GeV/c2.
