The correct momentum scale is established by the following steps: validate and quantify distortions or systematic effects in the Central Outer Tracker and Silicon Vertex Detector, apply and fine tune the energy loss corrections per track, and finally tune the magnetic field scale. With the momentum scale established, we find: m(B) = 5279.10 ± 0.41 (stat) ± 0.36 (sys), m(B0) = 5279.63 ± 0.53 (stat) ± 0.33 (sys), m(B[s]0) = 5366.01 ± 0.73 (stat) ± 0.33 (sys), m(A[b]) = 5619.7 ± 1.2 (stat) ± 1.2 (sys) MeV/c2. The measurements of the A[b] and B[s], masses are the current world best. The value of the A[b] mass is consistent with the CDF run I measurement resolving a discrepancy in the PDG average.

Book excerpt: This thesis reports on the final measurement of the flavor-mixing phase in decays of strange-bottom mesons (B_s) into J/psi and phi mesons performed in high-energy proton-antiproton collisions recorded by the Collider Experiment at Fermilab. Interference occurs between direct decays and decays following virtual particle-antiparticle transitions (B_s-antiB_s). The phase difference between transition amplitudes (“mixing phase”) is observable and extremely sensitive to contributions from non-standard-model particles or interactions that may be very hard to detect otherwise – a fact that makes the precise measurement of the B_s mixing phase one of the most important goals of particle physics. The results presented include a precise determination of the mixing phase and a suite of other important supplementary results. All measurements are among the most precise available from a single experiment and provide significantly improved constraints on the phenomenology of new particles and interactions.

Book excerpt: This dissertation describes the measurement of the average B hadron lifetime using a high statistics sample of B--> J/psi X decays produced in proton antiproton collisions at a center of mass energy of 1.8 TeV at the Fermilab Tevatron. The integrated luminosity of the sample is 10.1 pb-1 recorded with the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF). In this analysis the decay vertex of the decay J/psi -->mu^+ mu^-$ as reconstructed by a silicon vertex detector is used to extract the lifetime from the data. We find the following value for the average b hadron lifetime: [ tau_{B} = 1.46 pm 0.06; (stat.); pm 0.06; (syst.); ps] This is the first measurement of the b-hadron lifetime at a hadron collider. It demonstrates that it is possible to access the large b-quark production cross section in $poverline{p}$ collisions and to achieve high statistics even in modes which have small product branching ratios as in this case: $BR(Brightarrow J/psi X) cdot BR(J/psi rightarrow mu^+ mu^-) = 7.7 times 10^{-4}$.

Book excerpt: The Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF) is a multi-purpose detector designed to study proton-antiproton collisions at center-of-mass energies of 1.96 TeV/c2. One of the most importatn components of CDF is the silicon tracking detector. A detailed description of the testing and construction of the CDF silicon tracker is presented. Measurements of the tracking efficiency of the completed detector are also provided. Using 36 pb−1 of the J/[psi] data sample collected by CDF between February and October 2002, the inclusive B → J/[psi] X cross-section is measured in p{bar p} interactions at √s = 1.96 TeV/c2. The fraction of J/[psi] events arising from the decay of b hadrons is extracted using an unbinned maximum likelihood fit to the decay length of the J/[psi] candidates. The p{sub T} dependent differential cross section for inclusive B → J/[psi] X events with rapidity.

The masses of b-hadrons have been measured precisely by the CDF collaboration in decays containing a J/{psi}. A blind search of the decay mode B{sub c} {yields} J/{psi}{pi}{sup +} resulted in a peak of 18.9 {+-} 5.4 candidates at a mass value of 6287.0 {+-} 4.5 {+-} 1.1 MeV/c{sup 2}. A new limit has been set to the decay B{sub d, s} {yields} {mu}{sup +}{mu}{sup -}. Both the CDF and D0 collaborations are in the position to put a limit on the frequency of the B{sub s} oscillations. D0 reports {Delta}m{sub s}> 5.0 ps{sup -1}.

In 19.3 pb[sup [minus]1] of [bar p]p collisions at [radical]s = 1.8 TeV taken in 19920--93 at the Fermilab Tevatron collider, approximately 300 B mesons have been fully reconstructed. The measurements require precise determination of the helical track parameters of charged particle tracks. We find M(B[sub S][sup O]) = 5367.7 [plus-minus] 2.4 [plus-minus] 4.8 MeV/c[sup 2], [tau](B[sup +]) = 1.61 [plus-minus] 0.16 [plus-minus] 0.05 ps, and [tau](B[sup O]) = 1.57 [plus-minus] 0.18 [plus-minus] 0.08 ps.

The lifetime of the B[sub s] meson is measured using events from the semileptonic decay B[sub s] [yields] [ell][sup +][nu]D[sub s][sup [minus]]X and from the exclusive decay B[sub s] [yields] J/[psi][phi]. For the semileptonic decay channel, 76 [ell][sup +]D[sub s][sup [minus]] signal events are selected where the D[sub s] is identified via the decay D[sub s][sup [minus]] [yields] [phi][pi][sup [minus]], [phi] [yields] K[sup +]K[sup [minus]]. From this sample the B[sub s] meson lifetime is determined to be [tau][sub s] = 1.42[sub [minus]0.23][sup +0.27] (stat.)[sub [minus]0.11][sup +0.11] (syst.) ps. In the J/[psi][phi] channel, 11 events are used and the lifetime is found to be [tau][sub s] = 1.74[sub [minus]0.60][sup +0.90] (stat.)[sub [minus]0.07][sup +0.07] (syst.) ps.

These decays have been reconstructed in a silicon vertex detector. Using 5344 ± 73 inclusive J/[psi] events, the average lifetime of all bottom hadrons produced in 1.8 TeV p{bar p} collisions and decaying into a J/[psi] events, the average lifetime of all bottom hadrons produced in 1.8 TeV p{bar p} collisions and decaying into a J/[psi] is found to be 1.46 ± 0.06(stat) ±0.06(sys)ps. The charged and neutral B meson lifetimes have been measured separately using 75 ±10 (charged) and 61±9 (neutral) fully reconstructed decays; preliminary results are [tau]{sup ±} = 1.63 ± 0.21(stat) ± 0.16(sys) ± 0. 10(sys) ps, yielding a lifetime ratio of [tau]{sup ±}/[tau]° = 1.06{plus_minus} 0.20(stat){plus_minus}0.12(sys).

Book excerpt: The author presents a measurement of the dipion mass spectrum in the decay X(3872) → J/[Psi][pi]+ [pi]- using a 360 pb-1 sample of p$\bar{p}$ collisions at √s = 1.96 TeV collected with the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. As a benchmark, they also extract the dipion mass distribution for [Psi](2S) → J/[Psi][pi]+ [pi]- decay. The X(3872) dipion mass spectrum is compared to QCD multipole expansion predictions for various charmonium states, as well as to the hypothesis X(3872) → J/[Psi][rho]0. They find that the measured spectrum is compatible with 3S1 charmonium decaying to J/[Psi][pi]+ [pi]- and with the X(3872) → J/[Psi][rho]0 hypothesis. There is, however, no 3S1 charmonium state available for assignment to the X(3872). The multipole expansion calculations for 1P1 and 3DJ states are in clear disagreement with the X(3872) data. For the [Psi](2S) the data agrees well with previously published results and to multipole expansion calculations for 3S1 charmonium. Other, non-charmonium, models for the X(3872) are described too. They conclude that since the dipion mass spectrum for X(3872) is compatible with J/[Psi][rho]0 hypothesis, the X(3872) should be C-positive. This conclusion is supported by recent results from Belle Collaboration which observed X(3872) → J/[Psi][gamma] decay. They argue that if X(3872) is a charmonium, then it should be either 1D2± or 23P1++ state, decaying into J/[Psi][pi]+ [pi]- in violation of isospin conservation. A non-charmonium assignment, such as D$\bar{D}$* molecule, is also quite possible.

Book excerpt: This dissertation presents an analysis of the polarization of ' J'/ y mesons produced in 'pp¢' collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 1.8 TeV. The collisions were produced by the Fermilab Tevatron collider, the world's highest energy particle accelerator. The data were recorded by the Collider Detector at Fermilab during Run 1 of the Tevatron in 1992-1995. The 'J'/ y meson consists of a charm quark and its antiquark, and is the best-known type of quarkonium, the bound state of a heavy quark-antiquark pair. The measurement of the production polarization of 'J'/ y mesons and other quarkonia provides a test of quarkonium production models. The study of quarkonium production is important for understanding the strong nuclear force between quarks. The strong force is one of the four known fundamental forces, being responsible for binding quarks into hadrons and holding atomic nuclei together. The polarization of centrally produced 'J'/ y mesons has been measured over the transverse momentum range 4-20 GeV/'c', using an analysis of the angular distribution of their decays to [mu]+[mu]-. Decay length measurements made by CDF's silicon vertex detector allowed the promptly produced ' J'/ y mesons to be separated from those produced in ' B'-hadron decays. The prompt and 'B'-decay polarization parameters, Ã'P' and Ã' B', have both been measured. The measured value of Ã' P' is positive at intermediate 'PT', but is consistent with zero above 12 GeV/'c', in apparent disagreement with predictions of the NRQCD factorization formalism.

Signal candidates are identified through J/[psi] → [mu]+[mu]- and D(*)+s → [Phi][pi]+([gamma]/[pi]0) decays. With a two-dimensional likelihood fit involving the B+c reconstructed invariant mass and an angle between the [mu]+ and D+s candidate momenta in the muon pair rest frame, the yields of B+c → J/[psi]D+s and B+c → J/[psi] D*+s, and the transverse polarisation fraction in B+c → J/[psi] D*+s decay are measured.
