Book excerpt: A social history of Australia, not of the famous and heroic, but of the small people, the anonymous people who were the heartbeat of a growing nation What did kids do in the 1950s when there were no smartphones, tablets, and computers? They roamed the neighbourhood on scooters and bikes. They went on bush hikes. They went to Saturday matinees where the theatres were packed to the rafters, and kids yelled at hero-action and booed kissing. Most of their pleasures were self-made. Besides roaming the streets free of risk, kids enjoyed trips to the beach and zoo. They took a double-decker bus town to see the Christmas displays. Christmas in the city was a wonderland of toys and amusements. The decade of the 1950s now seems idyllic to many now in their seventies and eighties. It was so different from the first decades of the 21st century that those years now seem like another world, an impossible world of social and moral values. In today’s atmosphere, it seems hard to imagine it possessed any legitimate social and moral coherence. The author looks back on those years, telling the story as much about the world he grew up in as about himself. He starts from his birth in July 1946 and goes to the end of his second year at primary school, 1953, when he turned six and learnt to read. It was also the year that Princess Elizabeth was crowned Queen of England, a super-nova event for Australia. The author’s story involves his lifelong friend, Pete, a rubella baby, a condition which tragically took his already poor sight in his teenage years. Pete’s story, told as an adult without sight, is fascinating. The year 1946 was the year after the Second World War had ended. Despite an optimistic outlook, Australia was full of talk of the war – of the threat of war, of the suffering, of the shocking cruelty of the Japanese army, and of lost loved ones. The author’s upbeat father, just discharged from the navy with the rank of Chief Petty Officer, put it all behind him and began building the family’s first house in Lane Cove, a suburb on the north side of Sydney Harbour, and the scene of his childhood. Their new three-bedroom, double-brick home was like a palace. For a boy, who according to his mother had ants in his pants, the author remembers much about the social and political events that provoked his father into long and loud comment. He has clear memories of the Korean War, the activities of the communist-controlled unions, Prime Minister Menzies’ measures against them, and so much more. The local convent under the regime of the Mercy Sisters is an unmissable part of his story. He recalls with affection the sisters’ teaching methods and their strict regimentation of their pupils. He thinks some of their disciplinary methods, now condemned by many, are rather amusing to look back on. He regards that class of 1953 as the end of a phase in his development when he learnt to read. The following year, 1954, was rich in social and political events and will start the fourth book in the family history series, COMMUNISTS, BILLYCARTS AND TWO WHEELERS.

Book excerpt: 'The best American political biography since Obama's Dreams from My Father' Guardian NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER A mayor's inspirational story of a Midwest city that has become nothing less than a blueprint for the future of American renewal. Once described by the Washington Post as "the most interesting mayor you've never heard of," Pete Buttigieg, the thirty-seven-year-old mayor of South Bend, Indiana, has now emerged as one of America's most visionary politicians. With soaring prose that celebrates a resurgent American Midwest, Shortest Way Home narrates the heroic transformation of a "dying city" (Newsweek) into nothing less than a shining model of urban reinvention. Elected at twenty-nine as the nation's youngest mayor, Pete Buttigieg immediately recognized that "great cities, and even great nations, are built through attention to the everyday." As Shortest Way Home recalls, the challenges were daunting?whether confronting gun violence, renaming a street in honor of Martin Luther King Jr., or attracting tech companies to a city that had appealed more to junk bond scavengers than serious investors. None of this is underscored more than Buttigieg's audacious campaign to reclaim 1,000 houses, many of them abandoned, in 1,000 days and then, even as a sitting mayor, deploying to serve in Afghanistan as a Navy officer. Yet the most personal challenge still awaited Buttigieg, who came out in a South Bend Tribune editorial, just before being reelected with 78 percent of the vote, and then finding Chasten Glezman, a middle-school teacher, who would become his partner for life. While Washington reels with scandal, Shortest Way Home, with its graceful, often humorous, language, challenges our perception of the typical American politician. In chronicling two once-unthinkable stories?that of an Afghanistan veteran who came out and found love and acceptance, all while in office, and that of a revitalized Rust Belt city no longer regarded as "flyover country" Buttigieg provides a new vision for America's shortest way home.

Book excerpt: Taking a quantitative approach, Allan G. Bogue assesses the nature of radical and conservative Republicanism in the Civil War Senate, documents the distinctions among the senators, and clarifies the factors that encouraged or discouraged factionalism. The Earnest Men is divided into two parts: "Men, Context, and Patterns" and "The Substance of Disagreement." In Part One, Bogue investigates the backgrounds of the senators and the institutional structure of the Senate, and he examines the character of leadership exercised in the Senate chamber. He then uses roll-call analysis as a means of establishing distinctions between radical and moderate senators. To account for their voting patterns, he considers living arrangements, seating, regionalism, and election results. In Part Two, Bogue looks closely at the debates in the Senate in order to ascertain the nature of disagreements between radical and moderate Republicans in such policy-making areas as slavery, taxation, human rights, punishment and rehabilitation, and legislation affecting the border states. Taking issue with the idea that the Republicans were essentially unified on the issues of the day, he finds that their differences were widespread and important. A major study of the Senate in one of its most productive periods, The Earnest Men is a remarkable combination of systematic analysis and narrative history.

Book 13: HUNTED John Martinez had seen firsthand how dangerous to human life guns were when he was kidnapped and forced to live in captivity with guns held over his head. Working with the cops to assist with the rescue of others behind captivity, he hated guns. Now a free man and forced to flee his sister's home when danger follows his younger brother home, John did not expect their temporary shelter—the home of his sister's friend, Liberty—to be that of a gun lover. Trying to keep his brother safe, will he lose his heart to a woman who loves guns just as much as she loves him? Famous actress Liberty Stone was one woman nobody messed with. Rich, classy, beautiful, and confident, she was armed and knew how to protect herself when the need arose, thanks to multiple assaults she'd survived—assaults that turned her into a cold and unfeeling person, to protect her heart. When her friend, SSPD Officer Angel Martinez, requested temporary shelter at her Fortitude Homes Estate for her brothers amid a police case, Liberty readily obliged. What Liberty hadn't expected was a chance run-in with John, falling in love with a gun-hater with a tender heart, and an unplanned kiss leading John right into her locked-up heart. Together, will they find healing from pain and discover that God gives second chances and connects people in His time, in His way, and to fulfill His purpose—despite long-held prejudices? Book 14: COURAGEOUS SSPD detective Ladi Zoe was sure the dangerous mission to uncover the identity of the Hunter would be the end of her. Living under the constant fear of being outed, while performing duties that made serious criminal behavior seem elementary, she survived purely on the hope that her mission will be successful—and she will find out who the Hunter was. However, when she is assigned to a deadly mission which threatened the life of the man she'd secretly fallen in love with—Hughes Martinez, Officer Angel Martinez's baby brother whom she'd rescued—she is faced with the choice to save his life yet again and risk her own in addition to being unmasked. Will she choose to stay undercover and let him die to get the Hunter or will she accept for her cover to be blown, risk her own life all to save the life of the man she loved—who didn't know she loved him? Book 15: DEFENDED Hunted by dangerous elements, and barely escaping with her life, undercover police officer Ladi Zoe vanishes without a trace. With her whereabouts untraceable, she left behind a trail of evidence for dismantling a dangerous network of criminals, and the love of her life brokenhearted. But, her heroic actions only seemed to have stirred the hornets nest. Now, the bad guys want the SSPD destroyed. BOOK 7: FREEDOM Detective Mike Argan, an expert pilot serving with the Silver Stone Police Department (SSPD), loved the skies. His job as a police tactical pilot meant he faced deadly situations on a regular basis and was competent to handle them. Captain Robert Towers frequently trusted him with his life during active missions, and he'd never let the man down. But when an unknown enemy unearths secrets from Mike's past and uses them as leverage, it threatens not only his beloved career, but also the future Presidential prospects of those people he held dear. BOOK 8: REST CEO Ruby Towers and her husband, former Captain Robert Towers, had come a long way from their days growing up at the orphanage. They could hardly believe where their lives had landed. Ruby owned a multinational delivery corporation, and Robert was, well, a very powerful man. Now far from their humble beginnings as orphans, it seemed the good Lord had more surprises packaged into their future than they ever dreamed. Will the weariness pull them down? Or will they see the present maze of their lives through eyes of gratitude and rest in the beauty of God's purpose? BOOK 9: SUNSHINE Ritz Towers is in college, all grown up and seen by many as a celebrity. But her down-to-earth upbringing makes her view herself like any other youth—ordinary and ready to impact the world positively. When she travels abroad with a charity for a joint rescue and evangelical mission, and ventured into remote areas, she is shocked to discover how different life could be—and how blessed she was in parentage. Will she ever find out what Jaden is really up to or why he's behaving weirdly around her? This collection contains books 7-9 of the New Rulebook & Pete Zendel Christian Suspense series.
